What I have learned to do do is find a light weight filler for the bottom, like packing popcorn, then you can use a vinyl door screening so the dirt doesn’t go in between the packing peanuts or a pourus sheet because they are shallow rooted for the most part and it keeps the pot lighter. I have to carry my plants down a flight of stairs to my grow light stand I built for the winter and vice versa for spring. Any clay or heavier pots get really heavy. Just a thought!

All fine ideas---except I liked the bouquet much better than the table topper where the cacti were snipped off their roots---- I hate to see them trying to root in non earth (ie. foam)

Mr. Smith I highly suggest you get together with Debra Lee Baldwin when it comes to container gardening or succulents in general that poor pot in the beginning. I love you’re videos and content but for me specifically you could have used a little expert advice on this....thriller, filler and spiller, those are the three keys to a successful succulent container. J!!!!!! Oh my oldest flower friend on KZbin. I had no criticism however I’m still wishing you’d revisit growers in California. And go figure maybe include some of the massive succulent farms/nursery’s that are thriving within this massive trend and looks like a here to stay obsession. Xoxo to both of you, minus the first container these ideas were lovely and I am going to use a few of these sweet ideas. But for some who don’t know more about succulents I’d expect a few will have rotting jade from watering it right after cutting it from the mother plant and its lower leafs.

Erin S. Thank you so much for your kind comments! That first container grew out so beautifully though! 😉 to each their own. Thriller, spiller, and filler... I wonder who coined that phrase? Hmmm... Have you ever read my container book?! 😜

P. Allen Smith you bet I read your books!!! I was mostly poking a little fun and being ironic. The graptoveria (ghost plant) when grown out and leggy I bet was gorgeous!!!! I just reread my comment. I sounded kinda bitchy, sorry babe, so glad to see you and J my two favorite plant men in the world. But I wasn’t kidding about teaming up with Debra! You and J and her omg I’d be in hog heaven!!!

As always Allen, really great content! Love the pumpkin planter idea! Can't wait to try it. I have a question about the segment with Schwanke (4:55). Do the skewers become a kind of "root" for them to draw water or is this just for a temporary display?
@smallfootprint29615 жыл бұрын
He said the succulents will direct their roots down to the foam.
@PAllenSmith5 жыл бұрын
Thank you for the kind words! The roots will form and work their way in for a permanent display.
