The thing that makes Tim and Jill's marriage doomed is that they don't trust or respect each other. They don't even like each other. Jill doesn't love Tim for who he really is, she loves the idea of who he could be. On the other hand, Tim doesn't love Jill. She's always been nothing but duty that he has to honor. Both Tim and Jill treat each other like doormats. Without trust, there is no love. Jill's constant nagging and paranoia have created a serious trust issue between her and Tim. Jill believes that Tim shouldn't even talk to another woman, let alone spent time with them, without her getting suspicious. That kind of constant jealousy only harms a marriage and eventually drives a husband to cheat. And no wonder. Sometimes infidelity is an escape from a harmful marriage. Jill actually admitted that she married Tim "for his potential" rather than for who he actually is. Tim never once said he would change. He never said he actually wants to change. He's perfectly content with who he is. Anyone who would get into a relationship with someone for their potential instead for who they are is messed up and toxic. The way Jill always went out of her way trying to change Tim into her liking, forcing him to be something he's not is truly devastating. No wonder Tim can't stand his wife. Tim stays with Jill because of their kids and out of duty to their marriage while at the same time he's out there looking what else is an option. His attraction to Heidi is the main example of it. In "Futile Attraction" Tim realized that he's falling in love with her because of his jealousy of the possibility of her and Al being romantically involved. He wasn't just jealous, he was obsessive. His hurtful reaction when he saw Heidi kissing Al speaks volumes. Tim's friendship with Heidi is far more closer and deeper than his marriage to Jill is because Heidi respects, trusts and is truly loyal to Tim and vice versa. The reason why Heidi tried to quit Tool Time was because she values and respects Tim's opinions so much that she didn't feel worthy enough to be part of the show because she thought that Tim didn't appreciate her contributions. But Tim was never open about it because he's always kept distance between them because he's tried to avoid getting emotionally close to her.
