Just want to point out the "Magical Mystery Tour" cover was originally designed for the double 7" ep for the six original tracks from the movie that was released in 1967. The original cover incorporated just the title of the ep and the photo of the fab four dressed in walrus masks and opened up as a booklet with photos from the film and double single in each sleeve of the gate fold. The album version of the cover was designed for the American market, with side one of the album made up of the six MMT tracks, and all of the tracks that were added to side two were of 'double a side' single' to fill album out and were never really part of the Magical Mystery Tour. So I think it's fair to say some of the original charm of the MMT cover were lost in transition from ep to album cover. However, this is a minor detail and doesn't distract from the wonderful and inventive music that the original double ep first presented in 1967.

Ten Random selections that just don't get discussed enough when the topic of bad album comes up: 1. Sam and Dave - Hold On, I'm Coming. Sure, it's lazy and cheap but it's so lazy and cheap its an insult to one of the crown jewels of soul music; 2. Outkast - Aquameni. Hip hop album covers might deserve their own special category (but as a devotee of Harold Bloom, I understand that, as for all things, there is a single canon for bad album covers) so this is either a brilliant parody of bad hip hop album covers or another in a long string of bad album covers (which almost universally contained great albums) by Outkast. 3. Mew - And the Glass Handed Kites. Great Album, wretched cover 4. Steely Dan - The Royal Scam. I think it is a near axiomatic truth that Steely Dan's worst album is better than 99.95% of every other bands best (and this is not their worst album - Two Against Nature holds that by some way) but when it comes to cover art, let's say this brings them back to the pack somewhat, proving they can be just as awful as anyone else, if they really try. 5. Simon & Garfunkle - Bridge Over Troubled Water. This album cover is like a crime spree in a multi storey car park. Wrong on so many levels. A simple point to sum it all up - look at the beautiful symmetry and proportion of their "Bookends" album cover, and look at this. See what I mean? 6. Elvis Costello - Blood and Chocolate. Almost put Imperial Bedrooms on the list here instead, but B&C gets the nod because unlike IB, it's simply not a very good album 7. Dire Straits - Brothers in Arms. A purely personal choice, does this just seem not only lazy but somehow..... pretentious? Or is it that deep down I resent the album cover for being the vehicle which packaged and delivered 36,000,000 copies of an underwhelming record on behalf of one of the most overrated bands of all time? 8. Pulp - This is Hardcore. I love Pulp, I think they were the best of all the so called "Britpop" bands and I think Jarvis Cocker is one of the best dressed men in rock and roll. But this album cover skeeves me out something wicked. 9a &b . The Beach Boys - Keeping the Summer Alive and Summer In Paradise. KTSA is just weird - here are the boys in their geodesic dome, keeping anthropogenic global warming alive, Brian stuffed away at the back in his sandbox and what appears to be a bikini clad sex slave imprisoned with them, while hungry polar bears patrol outside waiting to feast on the first guy who needs to duck out and take a leak. And Summer In Paradise is all this, worse and after you're finished boggling at the album cover, you then have to sit through very literally one of the worst albums ever made by anyone, anywhere, anytime. No one should ever by this record - ever - under any circumstances. 10. Nas - Stillmatic. Given that Illmatic is one of the best album covers ever, Nas should have known better. Given that Nas' career since the brilliant Illmatic has been a rapid descent downhill into self parody and confusion, maybe that's expecting a bit much.

Also, *Too Old To Rock 'n' Roll: Too Young To Die* by Jethro Tull looks like a Mr. Clean advert substituting Ian Anderson for Mr. Clean. Also - and I know I'm not supposed to say this - but I have NEVER liked the album cover for *Who's Next* by (of course) The Who. Sorry; I'm not into watersports, if you know what I mean. I am also no fan of the *Sticky Fingers* album cover by The Rolling Stones, nor do I like their *Some Girls* album cover, either. Discussing continuity issues of Magical Mystery Tour as an album in comparison to Pepper is problematic. It's a compilation and wasn't meant to be an album. The six-track EP on the other hand works a treat, especially on vinyl where you turn over the 45s. COMPLETELY different experience from a Beatles LP. Meanwhile, not only do I think the Two Virgins LP cover is fascinating but it stands proudly as a well-executed album cover of its time. The desire of creatives on the cutting edge of late 60s art, music, film and literature were very often of course to push the boundaries of censorship and for a Beatle to go there too was bound to be of lasting interest. Mischievous bullshit or not (and regardless of its shock value at the time), I think it's tastefully done. I doubt his wife Cynthia was very happy though. Poor Cynthia!! See?? Even with that...there's just too much back story for it not to be of interest!

Magical Mystery Tour is NOT, and I repeat NOT the worst album cover from the Beatles, it's the one for yesterday and today where they all wearing white butcher suits with blood stains on it while holding plastic baby dolls now that is the worst album cover you she check out.

If you have an original copy on vinyl, I think you should send it to me and I'll have a good look at it....😊

The cover of _Origin of the Feces_ by Type O Negative makes _Two Virgins_ seem modest.

I kinda like the Asylum cover. I think The Elder with that brown door is way worse or Hot in the Shade cover is awful

I bought up all the Pink Floyd LPs I could find but gave a pass on "More" due to the wretched album cover.

Two of the best albums ever have lousy covers. The White Album, and Dark Side of the Moon. A Day in the Life, great Wes Montgomery album - a shot of an ashtray full of cigarette butts!

The Beatles cover and the Floyd covers strike me as not being so bad, but just kind of generic. I do think they reflect the tone of the music contained on the album, whereas the others in your list might not do that job so well. . Albums covers that I find were awful would be: King Crimson's In The Wake of Poseidon, ELO's The Night The Light Went On In Long Beach, George Harrison's Extra Texture, and of course - ELP's Love Beach.

1. Poison - Open Up and Say Ahh 2. Peter Frampton - I'm In You 3. Humble Pie - Eat It. 4. Black Sabbath - Forbidden 5. ELP - Love Beach 6. Elvis - almost any of them 7. Bob Dylan - Shot of Love 8. Bob Dylan - Saved 9. Scorpions - Virgin Killer (original) 10. Prince - Lovesexy More and MMT I both like.

I have said it before and I'll say it again: "Ride a rock horse" by Roger Daltrey, and more recently, the "cult of Ray" by Frank Black. Checkout those covers.

the More album a bad cover ,maybe you didn´t saw other album covers from that time, at least two of those are bad covers but also very subjective.

I would include the Beatle's album 'Let it Be". They couldn't get the four of them to pose for a photo together. The four individual photos' that were used aren't at all interesting or flattering.

The Scorpions had some really tasteless covers, like with “Lovedrive” and “Animal Magnetism”; Moby Grape’s “Truly Fine Citizen” is also a riddle to me.

Back is not Classic Rock; also, the cover sleeve/insert for Midnight Vultures was deliberately and ironically intended to be awful, which makes it quite good in a sense.

On a par with Two Virgins is Roy Harper's Flashes From The Archives Of Oblivion. Only a strategically placed black circle is hiding the fact that he appears to be "pleasuring" himself.

I think Bananas by deep purple is the worst. argghhhhh . didnt know that one
@hartmutpeter2153 жыл бұрын
I agree absolutely with you. Bananas by Deep Purple has an awful album sleeve. Two poor guys are sitting on bananas, oh Jesus. IT's the worst Deep Purple cover of all time. Deep Purple in Rock, Fireball,Burn, Machine Head and then the Bananas cover. When i want to hear, in my opinion, the good album Bananas i think oh no i must see it and then leave it.

C'mon, what's wrong with the covers for In Rock, Fireball and Burn?
@hartmutpeter2153 жыл бұрын
@@davidl570 sorry, unfortunately you misunderstood that. Of course i mean In Rock, Fireball, Machine Head and Burn have awesome cover artwork and then comes the awful Bananas cover artwork. Sorry again, maybe i didn't make it clear.

@@hartmutpeter215 No biggie! Figured you meant they were GOOD covers--but wasn't totally sure. Yeah, that Bananas cover is just plain STUPID............dunno what they were thinking!

@@davidl570 I'm a huge fan of Deep Purple since 1969. Their music is awesome and their cover artwork too. With one exception. The music on Bananas is really great but i hate that shitty cover. That's not worthy of DP. I guess Ian Paice, the chief, could have said ,oh man what have we done.

Magical Mystery Tour may not have the greatest cover ever, but it doesn't belong anywhere near a worse covers of all time list. Neither does More, though the colors leave a bit to be desired.

Never liked 'who's Next' to be honest. Not too dignified for the glories within, laddishness shennaniganry not withstanding. 'Piper at the gates of dawn' always looks kinda tacky but this phase of Floyd never really appealed tbh.
