I lived there for four years, and I absolutely loved it. HD is my favorite "Kleinstadt" in the whole world. I'd recommend crossing the river and following the signs to the Philosophenweg, the philosopher's walk. It's a paved trail across the river from the castle that affords stunning views of the Altstadt and a simultaneous stroll between manicured garden plots, with a huge, stone amphitheater atop one of the hills on the west end that was built just before WWII. The acoustics are fabulous. Speaking of WWII, Heidelberg's beauty can be traced back to the fact that a group of locals negotiated the surrender of the city to the Allies without any shots being fired, and allied bombs never touched the city, so the old buildings are originals, not replicas.

I was there twice for a few days. It was in 1975 and 1976. I still remember it well ! But I did'nt visit all possible ! I later came back in 1977, 1979, 1980, 1981 but only for some hours ! Even in 1986 for a Day. So about 11 French family members and friends saw Heidelberg.. All enjoyed the different visits ! I definitely need to come back once again !

It is one of those places you can visit, time and time again. We would love to come back at Christmas with the snow. I think that would be amazing.

I lived in Germany in 76,77,78 and spent weekends there. I saw burning of the castle several times. The Golden Dragon across from the big church was my favorite place to eat, I wonder if its still there.

Thank you for the nice video, I am living in Heidelberg since a long time and still enjoy it. I think that the event at the Neckar that you filmed was last year's "Sommer am Fluss" ("summer at the river") 😉. Normally cars will drive on that street. Not that anyone will be desperately searching for the food stalls 😉.

I just found this! We visited Heidelberg in June of 2007, and it's so wonderful to see the highlights again. I loved the apothecary room, and the giant wine casks. My Maternal Grandmother's grandfather, Johannes, was born in Heidelberg in 1835, but emigrated to the U.S., and died in New Jersey in 1904. I always wondered what it was like when he lived there. Our entire trip to Germany was great. The only downside was that the water cost more than the beer, and you often had to pay to use the bathroom. We So. Cal. folks need our ice water on a hot day. :)

Heidelberg was a very pleasant surprise when I visited a few years back. It was a bit of a stopover on a trip I was doing and had no real idea how wonderful it would turn out. Love to heard back at Christmas I think it would be enchanting in the snow! What a wonderful connection you have to the city!

2 Questions for you - 1. I presume from the video that you did not take the audio guide tour for the Palace. If so, why? Sure, the castle looks huge and there must be a lot to explore otherwise, but is the audio guide worth it or is it better to explore on our own? P.S. - I am fond of views from such heights and would love to fill up my camera memory with them. 2. I am planning a 1 day trip to the town, will it be possible to cover it all?
@MemorySeekers3 жыл бұрын
Hello, I don't generally take the audio guide as it's hard to hold that and film at the same time. It also slows you down if you are short of time. I only spent 2 hours at the castle but you can easily spend the day there. I arrived the night before and had just one full day to show you everything I did. So it can be done in day but it might not be that relaxed if you plan to tick it all off. Hope that helps.
@bazingapuzza3 жыл бұрын
I have been in Heidelberg many times ( i was Living close ) and i can assure you is almost impossible to do everything in one day, especially if you really want to go deep into the Altstadt and not just doing the " turistic thing ". For example there is the philosophers way right in front of the Castle on the other side of the hill. From this point you can see all Altstadt ( old Town ) and is a very beautiful place. You can go even higher though and see a nice park where you have a wonderful view of the whole city and surrounding. But it takes you 1 hours to get there starting from the castle. So unless you don't wanna walk 6/7 hours straight is hard to see everything in one day.
@bazingapuzza3 жыл бұрын
The Place is called Bismarckturm. Is not a very turistic place but i think has one of the best views of the city.

I was there in 2002 to 2003, courtesy of the US Army. I was a US Army officer stationed at USAREUR Headquarters which was at Campbell Barracks. As I understand it, ALL of the US Army installations in Heidelberg are now gone which is sad. Heidelberg is a GREAT town to be stationed in. When talking about the Neckar River, you didn't mention how, on hot summer days, you can see the young German women sunbathing topless on the banks of the river.

What cafe did you visit after your visit to Heidelberg Castle? You had what looked like a delicious schnitzel salad.

Hi I am afraid I do not know its name. I tried to find it on the map but failed. I do know it was about half way along Hauptstraße.

It is Cafe Extrablatt. The red&white straw in the Cocktail is typical for Café Extrablatt. And if you take a close look on the magazine next to the Cocktail you‘ll see the Café Extrablatt logo.
