It depends which country you are from. For example I know some peaple that are from Romania and some were accepted at Cambridge and some at Oxford, because they had really good results at their baccalaureate. This is a really important exam that they have when they are in year 12,also you need to know English really well, 'cause you are going to have an interview. 😊

I read The Making of the Atomic Bomb by Richard Rhodes during my A-Levels. There is a lot of physics and physics history there. But you can also gain insights into the life of physicists, history of WW2, and relationships of science, technology and politics. The heaviest thing to read is actually the impacts of the bombs in a human dimension, ie the aftermath and the ethics of it all. The last few chapters are quite emotional if I remember it correctly. The book was long for me but once I started I couldn't stop. For months after finishing, I couldn't stop thinking about the book. I discussed it in my UCAS personal statement, and received 7 out of 8 offers (at my time, you could apply to 8). Imperial rejected me because I wasn't predicted with 3A's (we didn't have the A* grade), fair enough, I am aware of my own weakness and was never disappointed about it. Richard Rhodes went on to write many more excellent books.

No that’s very good. You should read outside of your school work to find a field you’d like so when you’re going into your A-Levels you can choose the best ones for your specific course but if you don’t know what you wanna do by the time year 12 comes around don’t worry.

Hello, I have a big question: do you know if for an Engineering personal statement you are supposed to talk just about Engineering in general or you can actually take a specific subject and talk about that, because I really would like to study civil engineering but the first year in Cambridge I believe that is general engineering, in my personal statement I explained why I would like to study civil engineering and not why I like engineering its self, obviously I like Engineering in general but I love civil engineering the most, is that ok? Or should I rewrite it and say nothing about civil engineering in specific?
@orlaithday61356 жыл бұрын
I know that you probably want Paige's advice but I'm in the same position as you with civil engineering and wanting to study at Cambridge and I would recommend dedicating a paragraph of your personal statement saying something like "while I would love to study engineering and a broad spectrum I have found a particular interest/passion for civil engineering" etc or something like that. I don't know if you have applied for other universities for only civil engineering courses but for Cambridge that might be useful and then don't forget to say why and what reading you have done specifically on civil engineering and what you learnt from it. Hope this helps! Good luck with your application!!!
@tutorialinformation6 жыл бұрын
Orlaith Chambers well in my case, since I live in Switzerland, I chose to do a apprendiceship, so I've been working for 4 years with civil engineers (in a civil engineering company), and I mensioned that and what I've learnt from that, even though in the first part of my statement, I explained why I wanted to study Engineering more in general (mainly because of physics). P.S. no, I do not need Paiges answer, you helped alot, thanks. And yes I'm going to apply for other university in civil/structural engineering, because again, since I've been 4 years in the engineering ambient.

Someone already said this but yeah Extra- and Super-curricular are different (much to my distress after spending my life doing random extra curricular shit). Extracurricular is fun stuff outside of school that isn't related to your course like sports & music (unless you're doing sports or music). Supercurricular is (fun) stuff outside of school that IS related to your course like online courses, books, related volunteering, etc. So, yeah. Different. Sadly.
