I remember starting off working out of a couple 12” toolboxes and a couple oil pans doing anything and everything … it’s funny to think back and wonder how I accomplished anything with the limited tools I had at the time. Nowadays i have to reach for three different ratchets before I decide to loosen a bolt. When someone ask me what tools do they need, my response is always the same …. Enough to do the job

Right . I had the plastic tool boxes as a teenager floating around in the bed of my truck and had no issues using them . Now I'm spoiled with nice ratchets and wrenches and hate using lower quality stuff. I feel like you can never have enough tools . The longer you turn the more you evolve and grow and next thing you know you've been doing it for decades and have tens of thousand in tools .

I was blessed when I built my tool box I worked at a federal facility & I got a 50% discount on tool purchases. I found tools also from pawn shops too & another source I got my tools from mechanics leaving the work site & in my 18 years career I never had a tool credit off the truck. I'm 90% snap on / 5% Blue Point & 5% Milwaukee.

I totally agree. I worked in the automotive shop, small engine boat repairs, transitioned into industrial machine, commercial equipment & fleet automotive repairs and now I'm jumping into new trades on the side I've had all the major name brands before I ever heard of Harbor Freight. I used to rock the USA Craftsman, Proto, SK , Armstrong, Benchtop when I started but eventually got on the tool truck band wagon and transitioned (which is regret) Needless to say I wasted too much on tool trucks and came around full circle to say, use what works . It's about making money more than spending money . Great video.

Greatly appreciate you taking time and watching .I honestly feel like there are so many brands and such good pricing on amazon and ebay if you do your research you can get a great product at a reasonable price. I still enjoy roaming around harbor frieght buying random tools to make life easier. Certain things for me need to be certain brands.

For combo wrenches, I bought wrightgrip 2.0 for 19mm and smaller and 3/4" and smaller. Above those sizes, I buy Tekton. No need for premium wrenches in the huge sizes where you won't use them as often and when precision of fit isn't super critical. The premium wrenches get SUPER expensive in the big sizes and the split strategy I indicate here of buying premium for the smaller stuff and tekton or HF for the larger stuff has served me well. If you are really strapped, skip some of the big wrench set and buy smaller sets and then add individuals as needed. Standard SAE bolts in larger sizes are 13/16" 15/16" and 1 1/8". So maybe don't buy the huge set that has 7/8" and 3/4" and 1", but buy the smaller set and just add the commonly used sizes separately as needed.

Lost everything in a fire. At 44 starting over I'm looking for "good enough". Icon grip wrenches are amazing for the price. Quinn has a comparable socket set to tekton but still leaning tekton on sockets and wrenches. Icon Allen's and hex t handles. I really enjoy the Icon stuff just wish they had the larger sizes. I beat the piss out of Pittsburgh impact sockets and they are tough as nails. It was a hard transition from US made stuff and what I had invested and lost but feels like I'm making good decisions on decent quality tools. Feels like sears again if I need to walk in a warranty a tool

Great list and loved the video as always. If a may I would add this bit of advice, if you’re just starting or forced to start over, don’t start with a cart, you are fine to start with a harbor freight box, but you will need the room to grow. And as a starting technician (or starting over) you will grow that tool collection very quickly, and that’s hard to do when you have no room. You can start with a us-general 44” lower for like 600 and then grow into that and even add an upper and a couple side lockers. Also it’s important to think about starting with a good extractor set and a tap and die set. I know I’ll catch flack for this next comment but I stand by it 100%. Tell your wife about the videos, let her be a part of it in whatever way she wants to. Give her the opportunity to support you man. You seem like a great guy, and from what you have said, you got a hell of a woman. Food for thought. Stay greasy my friends.

I actually told the wife yesterday . She laughed when I told her and asked why I was hiding it .lol . She's supportive of it . I'm just curious how much she will watch and if she reads the comments . Might get me in trouble buying new tools . However she did get me an Amazon gift card ,so she made the remark of are you gonna buy tools and do another tool haul video . As far as buying a box for starting over for some one that has experience I can totally get behind buying a bigger box . For an 18 yr old kid or a newer person that never turned a wrench my honest input on that is to start with the smallest investment you can and grow over time. Just due to the fact I've seen so many young techs come in and out and try to sell thier boxes as soon as they quit from them finding out this field isn't for them. However I'm in full support of a US general 44 in box . It's absolutely fantastic and awesome price point. For a tech less than a year in I hate seeing them hop on the snap on truck and buy a big box when they have the bare minimum for tools.

Ya I’ve seen a lot of new guys selling off their tools and boxes, that’s why I like the 44” so much, great price and lots of storage. If any new technicians decide to read this…. Do not start with a tool truck box!!! Lol I started doing this when I was 17 and am 32 now… I didn’t get my first snapon box till like 5 years ago and just last year took it home and got a bigger one. There are a lot of great things to have starting off on those trucks, boxes aren’t one of them.

@howlingbreeze7078

depending on what you are doing at the time a cart is the best option, if you are starting out they are going to have you doing everything, everywhere and the time it takes to walk back to your box (which might be all the way across the shop) because you forgot to get something or grabbed the wrong size socket will just kill your entire day, and if you are on flat rate you paycheck. Personally I love my cart it has all my daily essentials, pliers, sockets, impacts and so on, roll it up to the job and unless I need something specific I don't have to go to my box . Eventually you are going to need a box it is inevitable and Harbor Freight does have some good ones, working out of a 44 inch with a side locker right now kinda kicking myself for not going bigger but lucky I have enough room to fit that in my shop.

I started a job as a hevy equipment mechanic for a mine last February. I had to buy all the tools for the job other then the stuff I had for genral car matanence. This list wasn't exactly what I showed up with on my first day but its supper close. I got Kobalt branded inpacts from Lows because there battery's where the cheapest on the market. I figured they would last for the first year and if i was still doing this i'd upgrade then but they won't die so I just keep buying more Kobalt tools. The one thing i would change on your list for sure is ratcheting wrenches are a must for me.

Personally I’d go with the dewalt high torque as it’s the most powerful 1/2 on the market right now for 300$ or under. The Milwaukee, Matco, and snapon are also good but it depends on which battery line you are in.

To me the sockets and normal stuff you can cheap out on. I wouldn’t cheap out on things that you abuse. Vise grips that grip well are important. A good tap and die set it essential. Stud removers ect. Beginning out I would also look into the Milwaukee impacts. I personally have a dewalt but I’m not a mechanic I only work on my own crap.

So for at home stuff I feel like cheaper sockets and wrenches will get you by with out issues . They may even last in a shop being used day to day granted i guess we would have to discuss what our ideas of cheap is , I highly recommend tekton sunex and things of that nature to me those are mid level brands. Definitely agree with a good set of vice grips . A tap.and die set and stud extractor are great suggestions usually every shop I've worked at has had those in shop inventory . Granted I guess that depends on shops as well. We use pretty much all dewalt tools when we go racing . I'm not a huge milwaukee fan but they do have an amazing product line and good tools

Government seizures, of various sorts. 3. Meth head neighbors and their illegal friends stole the rest. See 1 & 2 4. Then a tornado/flood/fire/blizzard, hit the shop. If you're fortunate enough to have that left after the foreclosure or forced estate sale....and/or burglary. 5.
