Universities are big business not institutions of learning. My daughter’s degree in Economics/Spanish was a huge waste. They dragged her time in school by only offering needed classes every other semester to the tune of 100K. She spent years trying to find decent employment. To go to college anywhere in the US, you have to have resources to begin with. Then you have to choose a major that is absolutely certain to lead to a very high-paying career very quickly - rather than one you might be genuinely interested in - and still you are deep in debt. That's not education. It's a game. Students need to be educated. Not trained, institutionalized and enslaved.

If you’re a gifted student I highly suggest trying to apply to universities in Europe. For bachelors degrees it’s kind of limited if you don’t speak the language of the country your interested in but there are still English bachelors degrees. For masters degrees there’s a lot more selection and lots of financial aid available to completely cover the tuition for non EU citizens (free for citizens) even without financial aid it’s usually cheaper tuition. The quality of education is just as good and you get to live in a different country and experience something actually new and unique. Cost of living is also cheaper than most US cities especially big college towns where rent is ridiculous for off campus housing due to the demand. I have dual citizenship so I did my masters in Finland for free but I’ve met a few fellow Americans here as well doing their masters degrees for free with study grants etc.

Some of these people worked inferior jobs in America as they worked to take the many courses America requires in order for them to practice here. Some did not want to do their entire education all over and opted to study to obtain a less challenging degree to study for less years. If one can do med undergrad overseas and then go to med school here, fine. But even established foreign doctors, lawyers, teachers, will have to go back to school, and that is my point.

It is not ''collusion'', it is called CONSPIRACY. Collusion is a word used when prosecuting an individual for knowingly working with a corrupt second party. CONSPIRACY is a group activity, meaning more than two, it's the difference in the terms ''a couple'' and ''a few''. It's what the railroad companies did, it's what US car manufacturers did, it's what the light bulb companies did, it's why things like unions and all of the regulatory bodies exist. The mobster owned US mainstream media reserves the use of the word CONSPIRACY for when they and/or their buddies are indicated so that they can attach the word THEORY to it and paint anyone who dares point a finger at they or their customers and partners as crazy. If you don't believe that conspiracies happen in the USA then you have ZERO knowledge of its history. This is the world's hotbed for the rich conspiring against the poor because without them conspiring against us they simply couldn't exist, they would be rooted out and done away with, and they know that.

I guess that they have to gouge the middle income people to pay for the the poorer kids who sneak past the admissions people. We live in the moderate-priced section of a really wealthy area. The college was supposed to be a real reach for my son based on his application alone. I suspect the name of our town flashed “people with money” to the school, so he probably got in based on our probability of being able to pay full-boat.

It’s a real problem for many universities when they don’t have enough full pay students to cover the costs of all of their programs. They have to make up the shortfall from donations or pull from their endowment. This is not a problem for rich schools, but I read a report that as many as one in 3 schools will be gone within 10 years because this model is not sustainable.

The states and local areas are often forced to give them preferential tax rates so they don't simply unincorporate from the area and pay no property taxes at all. So they often enter into agreements to admit a certain number of students tuition free to cover for their manipulative tactics. Some of the donors also give them money under the provision that it be used for low-income students. And, the government can actually decertify a university if they don't have broad educational teachings with diverse students and diverse professors. Honestly, these places open doors to you. You can go to a good school and get a great education, but struggle to find a job in software engineering (like me) or you can go to Berkley, MIT, Stanford, Yale, Harvard, Dartmoth, ect. and walk into a job when you get out. All of my professors were pioneers in the field of computer science, I went to a top 100 university in the middle of San Francisco, but what my school didn't have was the post graduate network. And the network is why you go to these schools. I look at the startups I'm applying to so I can see who works for them, and the one thing I always see is all of their engineers went to one of these top 20 schools I mentioned above. Unfortunately, it's not about what you know, but who you know.

I would disagree with the absolute part. Depending on the school, the type of knowledge and the type of student you are - a good amount of things can be self taught. That said, a lot of people don’t go to college to learn but to obtain a degree that would presumably allow them to increase their earning potential. A lot of that doesn’t mean in classroom instruction but connections etc.

@dunhillsupramk3

@@calvinhoward3808 doctors can only practice medicine only if they have a medical license (which is issued by each country not the university).. after leaving university they apply to a teaching hospital (its a normal hospital but the senor doctors there over look and teach the new batch of interns to become doctors) after applying and entering the program you'll spend anywhere from 4 to 8yrs (depending on the country laws) as an intern and during this time you have exams where you have to prove yourself and knowledge to the medical board... now Cuba has some of the best doctors in the world and they don't have a medical university (google it and you wouldn't find any) their gov't is directly responsible, there is teaching hospitals only... so if i had to choose a doctor between some rich snob who parents bribed their way through Harvard med school or a well taught Cuban doctor you can bet your kitchen sink that i'll go to that Cuban doctor..

Gacha These colleges are claiming to be need blind, claiming that they accept students regardless of their ability to pay full tuition. Colleges like this usually offer significant financial aid packages in order to meet the needs of incoming students who can't afford the high tuition. The colleges cannot claim that this is their policy, yet collude secretly to only give a certain amount of financial aid, which then blocks many highly qualified students from attending their schools because they would not receive enough aid to be able to afford to attend. $78,000 per year (and less!) is many Americans' yearly salary, and also the yearly cost of attending these colleges. Be real.
