@robsmith1a It is not too bad... I know the 2024 model is better. As it has a larger battery and a more efficient motor. But that is just me being a Geek!! I lease mine and it is very cheap. However, I would either buy 2nd hand or lease. As buying new exposes you to a massive drop in value over the first 2 to 3 years. Outside that it is a proper family alrounder.

Great video. Big fan of the Niro, my mum has a hybrid one. One thing I would point out is that don't be put off by the '2' being the bottom of the range. It is incredibly well equipped for a base car, including a pretty good automatic cruise control with autosteer system.

Just ordered myself a 22 month old model 3 with 27k miles for just under £26k from a main dealer. I’m using the Scottish EST used EV loan, so it’s interest free. I could’ve potentially used something slightly more practical, but for an overall package at that price, I couldn’t see past it, considering the big depreciation hit should be behind it.

Just went back to a 64kWh Kona Ultimate from a Tesla M3LR. Easier to get in and out of for us old folk and the tailgate allows larger stuff in the back. Also, a LOT less to insure than the TM3LR. Bonus is that there's still well over 4 years on the Hyundai's warranty. I won't mention the heated steering wheel though.

I have a 2021 plate Kona Premium. The car is on the whole very good to drive. A full charge gets me 300 miles in summer and just over 200 in winter (Heater on 19°C). I drive approximately 1000 miles per month. It’s not very good on icy or snowy roads (not compared to my other cars anyway) and I love the heated steering wheel. My wife loves the heated seats although I’m not so keen. Not the best car I’ve owned. That accolade goes to a turbo C3 VTR I once owned.

Good video. Having just purchased a used ev (Audi etron 55) your views match mine. I think what people don’t fully understand though is an ev isn’t a straight swap for an ice car. The multitude of tariffs from different energy suppliers, combined with the multiple charger manufacturers that your energy supplier is prepared to sync with seamlessly, along with whether these 2 work well with the car you get becomes very complex. Audi aren’t the best with letting the energy supplier and charger do their thing to optimise charging price rates. Maybe a topic for you to cover in the future.

An interesting list and a lot under £20,000. I am looking to change from my Kia E Niro 4+ that has been great and I would keep, but the lease runs out soon. I would recommend any car with a heat pump for the UK due to our colder winters. Range seems to drop when temperature drops below double figures. My E Niro has a heat pump and general Summer range around 250 miles and down to 210 miles in winter. This is based on 3 adults and luggage. Winter involved 200 miles driven around 2 celcius and car left for 2 weeks whilst on holiday.

putting my money where my mouth is, I would add Nissan leaf. solid car with the most experience of any EV maker. Cheap as chips to buy second hand. I have had mine for 3 years and the lease is now coming to an end. I have decided to buy it given its 13,500 for a 3 year old car, I know the history, it has been flawless. The main reason I want to keep it is the battery more than the car. I already have one Tesla power wall 2 battery system for my house which holds 13.5kw capacity. Currently during winter, if it is a really dull day, (solar does not top up the battery) the battery will take my house to around 4pm before it depletes and we import electric from the grid. Nissan leafs come with the Chademo connector with a bi-directional capability, meaning when the chargers become commercially available to buy for the public (they are currently in testing), I will have a mobile 40kw house battery to supplement the Tesla power walls 13.5 capacity. I was looking at getting a second power wall, but they are still around 9,000 to buy. Is it worth spending another 9K on a battery on the side of my house or 13.5K on a second EV which I can use to take the kids to school and then use as a supplemental battery at night when the sun has gone down. Seems like a no brainer to me. Just to add, the Nissan is not by any stretch of imagination a dynamic car, it has the charisma of a milk float, but its a decent size, very quiet, cheap to maintain and buy. for that reason I will be spending my own money on it rather than buying something else. I will be replacing my lease car with a Tesla model 3, which I will probably also buy out at the end of that lease if it proves reliable. cheers for the video, I really can't believe some of the prices you showed! thanks for posting. cheers John

I discovered the mokka-e second hand is now incredibly cheap! £16k even for a 1 year old car with 8k on the clock. I genuinely worry about the further depreciation of these cars though and it's the one thing putting me off buying one - why have they lost so much value, nearly half in one year - and how much more value will they lose over a 4 year hire purchase deal?

I think the Kia e-soul deserved an honorable mention at least. It's another sister to the kona and niro with a much sleeker look. I'm torn between it and the kona. Kona is more efficient but looks a bit bland imo.

Would have agreed with you a few years back. Tesla with the charging network were streets ahead. Now their charging network is starting to open up to every EV owner with a CCS plug, it will only be a few years before they all are. On top of that the other networks are expanding. Gridserve is on a massive expansion program for example. Recently I completed a 1700 mile trip around the UK in my Polestar, no issues charging at all, using mainly Ionity charging stations but also an Instavolt, Gridserve and a Tesla super charger.

@@stevenbarrett7648 You assume Tesla owners are the only one getting cheap charging. Many cars come with charging deals these days or if not then you can get your own deal. Polestar owners have a deal through Ionity where we get cheap charging at 35p kWh. Most of my charging is done at home at 9p but about 25% is done at Ionity at 35p, making my cost about 5p a mile over the year.

I get that it's a bit of a marmite car for many but the criticism it received from largely ignorant testers imo was not justified. We'll be keeping ours which we bought used in March 2023 for many years. 200 miles at this time of year and we saw over 300 miles during the summer from a 58kWh usable battery and no heat pump. More than enough for our usual needs and we will be travelling from Warwickshire to Orkney for our holidays next summer.

"There is a recent conspiracy suggesting that various overseeing authorities appear uninterested in intervening and are consequently allowing insurance companies demanding outrageous premiums for electric cars without any apparent justification. This should be a matter of concern for the relevant authorities, especially considering that car insurance is compulsory, and the importance of a cleaner environment cannot be overstated. It is plausible that this conspiracy is being financed by oil companies leveraging their vast resources."

@@ElectricVehicleMan I will say the second hand car market is disfunction right now. Without naming dealers I have family/friends who work for the largest uk dealership in the uk. They are selling very little right now and they are only surviving on secondhand car sales. They are worried for the future as they now need to sell 20% electric. They just cannot sell that amount of electric cars as the reality is no one wants them. We had the early adopters and companies propping these figures up. Now ex-lease cars a piling up in fields as they cannot flood the market with 3 year old EV’s as they did not anticipate the depreciation in their calculations. So something had to break next year, should be an interesting year. They predict a dire year next year as it’s a Mexican stand off between the buyers and EV’s.

The only way to get used cars on the market is for someone to buy it new in the first place. Can we have a round of applause for the people who have vast amounts of money to throw away? EV depreciation is MASSIVE! To work financially over an ICE vehicle you’d need to be covering over 200,000 miles per year, always charge at home, and still have a cheap rate electricity tariff.

I think consideration needs to be given to how much of the EV depreciation has been caused by Tesla slashing new car prices by 20% before any other considerations. That's unlikely to happen again. @@EwanM11 the EV Vauxhall Corsa cost 13 grand more than the equivalent ICE car.
