When people today reference Louis Breguet as the inventor of the tourbillon they fail to give due credit to John Arnold, who was the first to develop the concept of a tourbillon, and whose initial work on the mechanism was curtailed by his death. However, Arnold passed his work to Breguet, who personally acknowledged Arnold’s contribution to the invention of the tourbillon by placing his first tourbillon not into one of his own watches, but into one of John Arnold’s early pocket chronometers, Arnold No. 11, which he presented to John Arnold’s son, having also had it engraved with the following inscription: “The first Tourbillon timekeeper by Breguet incorporated into one of the first works of Arnold. Breguet's homage to the revered memory of Arnold, given to his son AD 1808."
