This video has similar information as my first video on the subject. However this contains more details on how to extend the season and how to care for the grafts once they take. I you have never done this before and want to try it you could get a lot of useful information. www.myavocadotrees.com

I appreciate your sharing of all of this information. I live in La Paz, Mexico, on the Baja Peninsula, and I have experimented with grafting citrus and other trees, working from memory from what I saw my parents do when I was a child and with a book that explained it. It was discouraging because my grafts didn't take. Your explanations have inspired me to try again. Thank you very much.

I would recomend pruning the host host trunk leaves, they take lots of energy from the trees and that's why the grafts are not growing. As long as the stem or trunk the grafts are attached to is green there is no need for leaves, even you could cut the big leaves in half and that will also affect the grats possitively.

Angel I usually try ti bud to put it as close the the base of the water shoot as possible. I also take into consideration the shape of the bud wood. IF I can and makes sense I place it in the shade side. You have to prune as much if you want to change the variety, but you can experiment.

How long did it take the trees to develop water shoots after the trunk was cut? I have twenty avocado trees that I would like to try top working using this method. I live in southern california and will have access to good bud wood next spring and would like to time the water shoot growth to be ready to except grafts sometime next spring. I'm afraid if I cut the trunks too early the water shoots will be too big, and if cut to late, the shoots will be too small and I could miss the graft season.

Great video. How are you taking care of (storing) the *dormant* bud wood you collected prior to grafting in the active season?
@GraftingAvocados
@GraftingAvocados 10 жыл бұрын
Thank you. We really don't have a "dormant season" in So. Florida so I don't store bud wood. My determining factor to graft is when the bud wood is ready or I make it ready. I have tested avocado bud wood it will last 5-6 weeks properly packed in the refrigerator, but seldom do it.

I would not be afraid of the shoots being too big. Remember as long as its cool you have a grafting season. If you miss the preflower budwood you get some after the first flush like I did in this video.I saw them yesterday and are 12" tall. Remember there will be some trees very slow, about 3-4 percent of my died. I'm told it is very rare. youtube limit the size of replies contact me on my web

Great video, thank you very much. I plan to try this technique with some hass bud wood in my backyard on my fuerte avocado tree. A question, how long after you cut the bud wood can you keep it before grafting, and is there anything you should do to the bud wood to keep it alive prior to grafting? Also is this veneer method of grafting the most successful method you have tried or would you recommend others such as whip grafting?
@GraftingAvocados
@GraftingAvocados 7 жыл бұрын
I normally get the bud wood and graft it. Do it as soon as possible. I have kept some in the refrigerator vegetable drawer in a plastic bag with moist tissue for two weeks but the percent of takes diminishes. For me veneer is the way to go for canopy change. When you decapitate you Fuerte make sure you protect the trunk from sun burn

I have a 50 year old criollo avocado tree at about 2000m in Central Guatemala would this work on such an old tree should I cut it down to about 1.5m and let the water shoots grow then splice them using this technique?I have a surplus of criollo tree on the land that I recently purchased and would like to stagger the harvesting season and extend it into the rainy season. I am using the trees roots as a retaining device and would prefer to keep them healthy and alive and I though that this might be a solution.
@GraftingAvocados
@GraftingAvocados 10 жыл бұрын
Isadore, yes I have seen it done in older trees as well. Take into consideration some trees never recover and die. Your climate is quite different than mine. I would do the cutting to time to have water shoots of 20-30 mm thick by the time the bud wood of the new variety is in stage 511-512 and graft then. See my web page for the BBCH code with pictures. Good luck.

Looking to start growing and have probably a very dumb question. One thing I'm having trouble finding an answer to is this... in order to get a fruit bearing tree, do you have to graft a seedling with a stem from a tree that has already bore fruits? Or can two trees be graft with neither having bore any fruit? Thanks in advance!
@GraftingAvocados

+mike mesteller The first is the accurate answer: "you have to graft a seedling with a stem from a tree that has already bore fruits" I add: from an specific variety you want.
