Being an oldish guitarist, I'm not sure what the cutoff is for "young." I would recommend checking out these youngish players: Karlijn Langendijk - kzbin.info/www/bejne/qoHEh3StrK6ghJY Laura Rouy - kzbin.info/www/bejne/bajcdaCVm8d6jqc Max Muller - kzbin.info/www/bejne/qne2ZZqni8uAZs0 Zoe Barnett - kzbin.info/www/bejne/jGbTiqxqmrlngMk Kevin Loh - kzbin.info/www/bejne/bJKbda2oaa6Sp7s Carlo Corrieri - kzbin.info/www/bejne/aaKZn4WcpMmgZq8 Eleonora Perretta - kzbin.info/www/bejne/a2GpoKFofK6WobM

Excellent list. Of course Siccas and GSI are excellent sources of new and rising talent. Corrieri is particularly excellent. Langendijk seems to have an approach similar to the late great Michael Chapdelaine. Insane amount of talent out there. I'd mention Tomasz Fechner, if only because I want to play the HVL Schottish from his Suite Populaire this well before I die. I'd better get cracking! kzbin.info/www/bejne/fpbLaahvi6emmLc

@@StevenBornfeld Yes, I miss Michael Chapdelaine. I have fond memories of playing Beau Fleuve for him in a masterclass about twenty years ago. We went to lunch afterwards and he couldn't be more gracious. Back then this piece was also called "On Christmas Eve." I didn't realize until today that he also called it "Tribute to Pat Metheny." kzbin.info/www/bejne/m6nIfpenq5Jooa8

@@StevenBornfeld I love Suite populaire brésilienne, I don't think it gets the attention it deserves. There seems to be a wide variety of renditions out there - mainly tempo and articulation. Many times when I hear top players perform these five pieces I notice a slower, more relaxed playing style compared to how I play them. I like the way Tomasz Fechner plays, though a little slower with more rubato than I do (particularly at 2:18). When a melodic note is repeated, I often make the first note detached/semi-staccato like this: kzbin.info/www/bejne/m6nIfpenq5Jooa8 About two years ago I decided to create an HVL set and stick with it until it was thoroughly memorized and mastered. I think I'm finally there. While the etudes are great, I don't feel up to the virtuosity required and think they're not as appealing to non-guitarists. My set is: Prelude No. 1 Choro No. 1 Suite populaire brésilienne (all five pieces in order) Prelude No. 5

@@orlandoguitaristWell, I finally got a classical teacher 2 years ago at the tender age of 69, and I have a long way to go. I've been working on the Suite Populaire for over a year now (except for the Valse-Choro unearthed by Zigante) but I certainly can't say I'm on top of them. I aspire to the Preludes, Choro 1 and etudes, but I'll likely run out of time. Great to have a set like that. Greetings from Brooklyn!

Yeah incredible guitarists there in terms of technical abilities not sure if they would be some of my favorite guitarists though. Perhaps another one like this you could do for classical guitarists are hidden gems of the guitar world, guitarists who don’t get enough credit or are not so well known but are incredible both technically and expressively. I have a few in mind but would be interested to know what others would come up with, basically guitarists that don’t really get enough credit and slip under the radar for whatever reason. Thanks for your videos.

What, no Vera Danilina!?!?!? If there's some agenda behind this omission, just remember that you undermine the credibility of the fine young players on your list (all of whom are superb) by failing to mention the most obvious candidate for such a list.
@StevenBornfeld
@StevenBornfeld 5 ай бұрын
I certainly agree about Danilina. But these lists really seem to be designed mostly to start the discussion. Yeah, most will have glaring omissions. Didn't Rolling Stone's most recent "100 greatest guitarists" somehow not list Joe Pass?
@stephenyatesacoustic
@stephenyatesacoustic 5 ай бұрын
@@StevenBornfeld I agree that the intention is to start "discussion" ("argument" might be a better word, given the nature of the internet) but the omission of Danilina just seems weird to the point of perversity. Admittedly there are a number of other notable omissions here; Thibaut Garcia and Sean Shibe being two very obvious new stars of the instrument who are conspicuous by their absence, but in the case of Vera Danilina, her internet presence has been so large of late (and deservedly so) and the "hype" around her so strident that leaving her off the list has the unfortunate effect of devaluing the players who are on it by making it look as though the list was never serious in the first place.

The more interesting list would be the most influential players. During the times of Segovia and Bream there likely existed more proficient players than them, however, unlike Segovia & Bream, they had no lasting effect on the landscape of the classical guitar. To paraphrase JFK, don't ask what the guitar can do for you but what can you do for the guitar.
@picksalot1
@picksalot1 5 ай бұрын
Agreed. The most influential guitarist alive right now that uses a significant amount of Classical Guitar technique is actually the Electric Guitarist named Matteo Mancuso. He has a number of YT videos, and they will blow your mind. I'm a lifelong Classical Guitar player, and he is the real deal. We're talking Segovia, Wes Montgomery, Django Reinhardt level influential. Unbelievable technique and musicality. Fasten your seatbelt, and watch some of his videos. You won't be disappointed.
@Summalogicae
@Summalogicae 4 ай бұрын
@@picksalot1Matteo Mancuso is a phenomenal player with world class technical and improvisational skills; yet his influence is no where near that of Segovia. Segovia brought the guitar into the mainstream, effectively killing its stigma as a mere folk instrument; he demonstrated, through technical and interpretative leaps unheard of before, & with repertoire choices of transcriptions of respected classical music compositions, that serious classical music can be performed at a high level on the guitar; Segovia virtually created what counts as the standard classical guitar canon for players of all levels, much of which holds to this day; Segovia professionalized classical guitar pedagogy and technique so much so that it’s because of his influence and his students, that colleges and universities, especially in the Anglo world, began creating classical guitar departments; Segovia’s influence put the guitar into chamber ensembles and concerto orchestra’s around the world; moreover, Segovia greatly expanded classical guitar repertoire by commissioning numerous new works by many different contemporaneous composers; Segovia (along with Rey de la Torre) built the foundation for what counts as universally recognized model of technical ability among classical guitarists, which has had only marginal modification in almost a century. Matteo arguably is not influencing electric jazz guitarists or rock fusion guitarists to drop the pick and start fingerpicking. Not sure how you think he’s influential. It’s not clear he’s even using classical guitar techniques. Sure, he’s fingerpicking, but classical guitar is far more than just fingerpicking.

@@Summalogicae Matteo Mancusco is currently 27 years old. He has tremendous potential, and the top Electric Guitar players in the World are singing his praises, and are wondering if he's the best guitarist that ever lived. I'm just pointing out how significant that is. Just looking at the numbers, the rough estimates are there are just over 1 million Classical Guitarists, and as many as 72 million people that play Electric Guitar at an intermediate and expert level in the World today.
@Summalogicae
@Summalogicae 4 ай бұрын
@@picksalot1You explicitly claim “Segovia…level influential.” This is just empirically false. He’s achieved very little with respect to influence compared to Segovia’s reach of influence. You then claim in response that he’s 27 and has tremendous potential, and that top electric guitar players sing his praises and are wondering if he’s the best that ever lived. You claim that you are pointing out how significant that is. Well, this is far different than claiming Segovia level influence. So, people sing his praises bc he’s excellent-this is trivial and unrelated to your claims. You claim top electric guitarists in the world are wondering if he’s the greatest that ever lived. Which top electric guitarists are saying this? Goven, Quayle, Thal, Oz Noy, Eklund, Max Ostro, Abasi? I can go on and on. Now, let’s say the greats are saying this-irrelevant. People once thought Hendrix was the greatest guitarist, which is different than claiming how influential the guitarist is. Another generation said George Benson, or Al Di Meola; then it was EVH; then Malmsteen; then Holdsworth; some said Jason Becker, some said Lane; many still say Holdsworth and Goven. One or two greats might say this (I’m unaware of who may have) but many greats have been wrong in the past about the scope of influence. For that reason, I don’t think it’s a big deal for a bunch of great guitarists to praise another great guitarist. That’s not significant
@picksalot1

@@Summalogicae Steve Vai, Joe Satriani, Eric Johnson, Al Di Meola, Joe Bonamassa, are just a few of the guitarists I've seen singing Matteo Mancuso's praises. I think if you asked any of the fine guitarists you listed that have heard him, they will sing his praises as well. Doing a quick check using Bing Copilot, I did find the following: "Max Ostro: Max Ostro has performed with Matteo Mancuso in a Fusion Collab. Tosin Abasi: Tosin Abasi has praised Matteo Mancuso, calling him a “virtuoso beyond virtuosos” and has shown admiration for his work."

Among the other great guitarists I've seen here recently have been Bokyung Byun and Johan Smith (both past GFA winners).
