What would you do if the presence of gangsters plagued your entire life? Not just one or two, but gangs upon gangs that held way more power than the officials and government.
This isn't a scene from a movie but the day-to-day life of the residents of El Salvador. Gangs upon gangs, with a grip so tight on the community that even the government's attempts at reform are met with fierce retaliation.
Prisons? They've become headquarters for these gangs, with officials having little to no control. Stepping outside means risking your life, and the constant fear that your child could be the next recruit is a constant shadow over your family.
Neighborhoods are emptying as families flee the country in search of safety.
That was, however, until President Nayib Bukele stepped onto the scene. In January 2023, he initiated a move that would begin to change the narrative.
The inauguration of the Center for the Confinement of Terrorism, or CECOT as it’s more commonly known, marked the first victory in a long battle against gang dominance.
As much of heaven as it was for the locals, the prison became a living hell for the gang members.
And today, I’m here to show you what life is like in that prison!

American prisons have already gone to extreme building and reforms after the " Crack " epidemic in the late 80s and 90s. A thousand new inmates a month were coming into Colorado's system and they had to build 3 new facilities plus two private prisons were built. One being Closed 8 years later.

I visited El Salvador in 2007. At that time there had been a huge reduction in gang power due to a law against face tattoos that permitted easier arrest. I spoke with a young mother. I asked how this affected her. She paused, and explained that up to just a few months before whenever she went to the market, there was a big chance a teenage boy (even aged 12 or 13) with a rifle would force her to have sex. She said everyone looked away. If she resisted, she knew she might not get home to her children. Now she said, she could put makeup on, dress up her hair, and so on. Before no. Only wear dowdy cloths and scarfs to reduce attracting the little rapists. Pity for the gangs? They deserve much worse than these prisons.
