I found this video interesting. I was born and raised in Pyinmana which is now part of Nay Pyi Daw. When I was around 13 years old (2003), I heard from elders that something was building around own town. Some workers from my town commuted to development area. I always believed that they were building a big dam (Paung Laung) for electricity project. But after two years, the elders again sharing some unconfirmed rumors about a new city project. They said Pyinmana will become the district/ state capital . But later we knew they were working on a new capital which is similar to Yangon . At that time , no name has been confirmed, people assumed "Yan Lone", "Yan Shin" etc. Those name are hilarious , common dog name. They gave the name "Nay Pyi Daw" when I was 15, just I'm studying for my university entrance exam. The 20 lanes road hadn't been built yet. And there was no big pagoda, the replica of Shwedagon. My school took us a field trip around Nay Pyi Daw with newly operated Buses. We mostly saw constructions in the forest. Pyinmana ,Lawei, and Takkon which are former towns in that region were integrated into the Nay Pyi Daw territory. The new city was unlivable, so people lived in nearby towns and commuted to Nay Pyi Daw for work. They developed new towns and roads that are randomly interconnected in the city, and gave Pali names which are very difficult to pronounce. During 2019, I thought whatever the initial intention was for Nay Pyi Daw.We should use the existing infrastructure efficiently without blaming to anyone. That was my thought during civilian ruling , no fear, naively believed everything can be made better. After 2021 Coup, that ideas was gone, once they built something for military purpose, they will use it sometime. Just for the correction, protests did happen in Nay Pyi Daw during 2021 February. I was there. The buses that transport staffs to ministry offices turned around and government officials stopped attending offices. The system almost breakdown. And the first casualty from protest crackdown happened in Nay Pyi Daw. Now, they have easily conquered the territory , no protest , people don't say nothing about them. But the protesters evolved into rebels and attacking military around the country. Nay Pyi Daw actually is being surrounded by battle zones. I don't know what shall I see soon. But something big is going to happen soon in Nay Pyi Daw. I wish this is the last war for Myanmar people. We don't want to see vicious cycles anymore.

I'm a resident of Myanmar who is currently living in Yangon. I found most of the contents in this video are accurate and some of the ideas are possible. We don't know either what is the main intention or plan of the military specifically. Most of everything they broadcast about Myanmar's situation are fake. But one thing sure about is that those mega projects or any other things that the military is planning are not mainly purposed for welfare of the citizens.

Local here. Naypyidaw was definitely built for security reasons that would benefit the dictator. Reasons are - (They = Dictator) 1. Afraid of leaking secrets - They didn't want anyone to know what they are planning or doing. Less people equal less likely to leak top secrets. 2. Strengthening security - The capital city can be planned to defend their high-ranking officials and can also be planned to flee the area when in an emergency situation. 3. They afraid the people - Most of the people in Yangon city (most populated city and old capital) have very unfavorable view on the government (same as the whole country) unsurprisingly and are occasionally protesting. 4. Avoiding the reality - The capital city can be built so that they can't see the poor people living in poor houses when going around the city but in fact most of the citizens are poor.

Naypyitaw was the dream project of former dictator Than Shwe, who built this city specifically as a hiding place for the bad guys, the military generals. Unlike the current dictator Min Aung Hlaing, Than Shwe was more than aware that he was The Bad Guy, and he wanted a place where he could live his last years of retirement in peace, as far away as possible from the people, without any chance of getting arrested for his crimes and be spitted out by the people, which is exactly what happened to Ne Win, the first dictator who took power in 1962. That’s also the reason why Than Shwe not only retired and stepped down, but also why he handed power to the NLD and Aung San Suu Kyi, much to the dismay and irritation of Min Aung Hlaing, who was appointed as Than Shwe’s successor as head of the armed forces. Yes, those 20-lane motorways were designed as a secret escape route for “The Bad Guys”, Than Shwe knew very well how Bad he was, and how afraid he was of facing justice for his crimes. Whether these escape routes will be used by Min Aung Hlaing is not likely, mainly because Min Aung Hlaing is much more ignorant and even stupid than Than Shwe, but also the problem is that Min Aung Hlaing has Nowhere to escape to….. By completely sealing off the country from the rest of the world and keeping his crimes hidden from foreign eyes, Than Shwe managed to make a few friends across the world. Burma was known for many years as the most secluded, mysterious and illusive country in the world. But… thanks to the new generation and modern technology like internet, Min Aung Hlaing is no longer capable of keeping his crimes hidden, and right now, No foreign country is willing to accept Min Aung Hlaing as a refugee, Not even his friends, like China, Russia or Belarus; not even Saudi Arabia is willing to provide shelter for this brutal criminal. So, the secret runways in Naypyitaw are Not likely to ever be used for that purpose, and they will remain empty. And last but not last, Naypyitaw is a ghost city because Nobody actually wants to live there; Most people that live in Naypyitaw were forced to move there under false promises like jobs, but ended up being hardly anything more than personal slaves for the military, working in the empty hotels, cleaners, builders and so on…….

The problem with most cities that sprawl out of nowhere is that the builders only ever consider the rich inhabitants, not the working or middle class, which results in many luxury buildings which are out of the price range of the majority. This will also become a issue in the Line at Saudi Arabia.

Why should companies that create housing building more expensive nice housing for people who won’t pay as much as others for it to be as nice? They should just give poor/middle class people more than they paid for? Lmao

@@NicEeEe843 I am guessing your first language isn't English because I had died and reincarnated after reading your comment. But what I assume you've mistaken is that I am asking the companies to just give the houses away for the poor and middle class. But that isn't what I meant. What I am saying is that companies should BUILD MORE AFFORDABLE housing so that the poor and middle class can also easily buy property in the new city
@NicEeEe843 Жыл бұрын
@@Morisu-Chan why should companies build more affordable housing? From the goodness in their hearts? Companies are made of people who work to feed themselves and their kids. Even if it’s a corporation people work to live and survive. Why should people who work to live and survive work extra hard for people not willing to pay? You live in a fantasy world where people just do things from kindness in their hearts. Yes people do good things but companies have zero obligation to make hood life easier unless you have the money.
@chissssssss Жыл бұрын
@@NicEeEe843 real estate companies have nothing to do with 'survival'. They are more often than not just greedy. that is why most countries have laws in place that stipulate a certain percentage of new housing projects to be affordable. companies are free to choose to bid on a contract or not but the market tells us that there are always companies willing to do it and thus that it is financially viable. the problem is that richer companies (talk about 'survival' again lol) usually get their hands on land before others do and obviously drive up the prices. You're out of your mind if you think we should let real estate companies regulate themselves or let the market regulate them.
@Morisu-Chan Жыл бұрын
@@NicEeEe843 I don't think you know how businesses actually work and how there is different markets. So let me give you a beginners guide. If you have a business that builds ONLY luxury properties, you're only targeting ONE SPECIFIC customer base, the wealthy, so like upper middle class and beyond. Which means you have left out around 80% of other potential customers who just simply cannot afford to buy your properties. Sure, you can make big profits when you sell one property, that's the benefit of targeting the rich as customers. Now, if you have a business that builds AFFORDABLE properties, you've left out the majority of the rich as customers, because of course, none of them wanna live in a cheap place. But you will still have a good handful who will mass-buy your properties so that they can rent it out as their own. Not to mention you've allowed access to 80% of the property hunters, the poor - lower middle class. So whilst you won't make as much profits when you only sell one property, your properties are basically guaranteed to sell much more than luxury properties.

A somewhat similar situation is seen in new capital of Chhattisgarh State of India. The govt wanted to move its capital 30km away from Raipur (old capital) to New Raipur and it was developed to be the most futuristic, Greenfield city with wide roads and well planned areas. Today even after 15 years, the city struggles to become alive. Only people go there are Ministry and Parliament people. They too come back to Raipur after work. Others include cleaners, Gardners and police. At night streetlights are shining with no people around. The amount of extravagant spending done on this city could have been rather used to develop other major hubs in chhattisgarh like Bilaspur but sadly govt wanted to show some elephant teeth.

This is not complicated. The capital was build to host the political power of the military junta so it makes it much harder for them to be overthrown. It is extremely far every from population hubs, and build with natural defense build in. The country has been in a state of civil war for decades now, with it becoming the second or third largest war in the world right now. The war is both a civil war with large sections of the country controlled by varies separate factions of rebels, and insurgencies that perform terrorism, including in the former capital. So this was made not for economic improvements but for better political security, much like Egypt’s new political capital. This, also because the military junta are idiots.

L.A. Would be still a parking lot. It's not the quantity of lanes, it's the mentaliry of drivers. Finland, for example, is happy with 2-lane roads across the major cities, because people have natural instinct of giving way to fellow neighboor. On the other side of the moon, in cities famous for road rages, people manage to clog-up the roudabouts..

As a Buddhist, I believe in the sin that the Myanmar military regime has done over this poor country that rendered it the deserted capital. Likewise, it must be a very bad omen that the brutal regime had killed many people in its country, because they had not surrendered to them and not wanted to be subdued by them, some of those victims included kids and women, which affected every dimension in Myanmar; no tourists, economic sanctioned, no people in Naypidaw and many more. Every junta in this country must be well deserved all the bad things they have done to thier own motherland soon and even in the inferno or life after death. PS. I'm not a Myanmar citizen, but a citizen of its neighbor country.

Hi! I’m from Myanmar! Naypyidaw was built for the benefit of the military. Though, it isn’t necessarily a ghost town per se. Naypyidaw has a lot of residents but only those who are of upper/higher class. I have relatives that live in Naypyidaw (they work for the government). Myanmar is a third-world country so here -- if you can afford it, Naypyidaw is often the ideal place to stay. ❤️

Actually the cost of living and cost of land is pretty cheap compare to other cities like Taungyi Yangon and Mandalay. People are just saying shit because it was built by the military. Naypyitaw is actually a very important city for the country's future as it provide the logistic chain for goods to redistribute throughout the country. Currently it have a population of 800K as of 2023 and it increases from 200K in 2010.

As soon as they said the name means "home of kings", I thought of Percy Bysshe Shelley's poem "Ozymandias": I met a traveller from an antique land, Who said-“Two vast and trunkless legs of stone Stand in the desert. . . . Near them, on the sand, Half sunk a shattered visage lies, whose frown, And wrinkled lip, and sneer of cold command, Tell that its sculptor well those passions read Which yet survive, stamped on these lifeless things, The hand that mocked them, and the heart that fed; And on the pedestal, these words appear: My name is Ozymandias, King of Kings; Look on my Works, ye Mighty, and despair! Nothing beside remains. Round the decay Of that colossal Wreck, boundless and bare The lone and level sands stretch far away."

Compare to 2010 , the populatuion have grown from 200K so its not as quiet as it describe. People are just talking shit on media without being there once. By the way the housing cost is actually very cheap compare to other cities which cost around 1-2 millions on average. It only cost $5K for 60x60 land during 2010 but have gone up to $15K-20K now. The people are just talking shit because they were construct to hate the military by the western media like VOA,BBC and etc which are funded by USA to spread hate.

It's important to shed light on the reality of Naypyidaw. This city, with its vast empty highways and grand but deserted structures, represents the misguided priorities of a military regime that has long ignored the needs of its people. Instead of investing in education and healthcare, billions were spent on a city that remains largely empty. The move to Naypyidaw was less about administrative efficiency and more about consolidating military control. It's a stark reminder of the challenges we face and the resilience of those still striving for democracy and justice in Myanmar.

In Indonesia we face the same problem. Next year we should "move" our capital city (Jakarta) to Nusantara located in Borneo island and many people are sceptical about this ambitious project. The reason is almost similar with this Myanmar capital, it's no longer could accommodate the citizen needs n over populated
@furball8967 Жыл бұрын
My understanding is that the movement from Jakarta to Kalimantan isn’t for the same reasons as it is with Myanmar. The movement is 90% climate related, by 2050 Jakarta city is expected to have 45% under water. Areas like Ancol, Manga Dua etc will all be gone. That’s forward thinking in my opinion, and let’s all hope that the new capital is built with everything climate related considered in its planning. Best wishes dari Wellington Zelandia Baru.
@luckybrilliantono2954 Жыл бұрын
@@furball8967 thank you for your clear insight. No doubt about it, that in the future Jakarta will sink. But based on this video, one of the official reason they move their Yangon is due to overcrowded, population outgrowing, administrative government, and the traffic, which is almost similar problem that Jakarta now facing. Like Malaysia, they have Putrajaya (40km from Kuala Lumpur) as a capital city for government administrative area, and I can say they really build this city carefully, with a lot of great mass transportation connection, and without any political pressure, but still... Putrajaya become also lonesome town. Well, I hope Nusantara will be our a cup of tea for all Indonesian and not turn into the next mega ghost city💸💸💸 cheers from Kuala Lumpur

Dubai used to be the same in the 60s. Give it some time... I mean a doubling of population in 9 years is insane! From half a million in 2015 to a million in 2024 when they're literally starting from scratch is pretty impressive! At that rate (and given no war) this city will be on the level of Bangkok by 2050... Of course many factors are at play, but there definitely are examples. Dubai like I said, Astana in Kazakhstan, Gurgaon in India, Shenzen in China, Canberra in Australia etc. Proper incentives and time. That's all it takes... I really wouldn't dismiss it right away.

If there's anything I've learned from the bigger cities, adding another lane doesn't fix traffic. You'll now just have 5 more lanes backed up because of a single on ramp merging on.
