This Commanding on a Budget series is a super useful resource for those of us who don't want to shell out for the "must have" cards. It's interesting to see cheaper alternatives that still work quite well. Very nice deck Judson! Nim Deathmantle with Brion is particularly enticing.

Even for people who do have access to a lot of cards I think it's a good idea to build one or two budget decks. It will help you become a better deckbuilder, a better player and will help you think outside of the box.

Totally converting my Zirilan of the Claw into this. Excluding lands, I probably only have to switch about 20 or so cards, and this looks a lot more interactive and varied (and therefore fun) than my Zirilan list :)

My all time favourite budget victory isn't an EDH game, but it has to be the time I beat a modern miracles deck with a standard mill deck I brewed up for fun with my friends. Turns out a pair of Curse of the Bloody Tomes can deal with pretty much any amount of scrying you're willing to throw at it.

I actually used your Trostani budget list (With some of the non-budget cards like Ajanis and Baneslayer) and destroyed a Odric deck. 15000 life seems good with Parallel Lives and a Phyrexian Processor set at 75.

I run a stoutarm deck myself, and some cards to consider for a budget version: Angelic Accord for free angels off of stoutarm's attacks or flings, Obsidian Battle Axe for a hasty, larger general, Oblivion Ring for more removal, Condemn for more removal that deals with generals, Insurrection for a game ender, Legion's initiative for bigger creatures and the dodge effect that also re-uses come into play effects, and skullclamp is too value to not run.

I'm currently playing a Purphoros deck similar to the one you guys posted. Mine is no longer budget but when is built it... it was worth about 50-65. Now it's got welder, wheel of fortune, mana echos, and other stuff that takes it from budget to over board. My budget build before it was done was still comboing out 3-4 players at once with fire cat blitz and tempt with vengeance doing 30+ dmg using mana doublers and damage doublers. I'm in the progress of switching it over to a full artifact build as slobad as my commander. It won't quite be budget fully but I'm missing about 65 dollars in cards and it's ready to go. The main win con is to get out a fat creature and turn it into a artifact if it was not already one and destroy all lands artifacts and creatures after making it indestructible. Disk, obliterate and jokullops are the mass kills. Forge and slobad protects my stuff. If mycosynth lattice is out there is almost no chance for anyone else.

Anax and Cymede heroic voltron. You havent played Sunforger properly until you've used it in this deck. The deck can win on turn 6. Granted, it's a 1 v 1 style deck due to the temporary bonuses, but it's so much fun to play.

So the rulings of commander indicate that when a single commander deals 21 damage to an opponent, that player loses the game... So my question is this, is Brion Stoutarm's activated flinging ability permissible in counting towards that collective 21 commander damage to defeat an opponent, or does it have to be a direct correlation of combat damage when Brion is attacking in conjunction with his power...? Lifelink is a static ability so that covers both attacking, and flinging.
@justinjacobs15017 жыл бұрын
It has to be combat damage. It used to be damage of any sort, but a certain dragon by the name of Niv kind of ruined that for everyone.

I often win games with my 10tix Sun Quan, Lord of Wu list. It's a blue aggrolist that is themed around creatures that do stuff when they tap/attack/hit a player and by making them unblockable they won't die that easily. One game I even took out 3 players with the help of Jangling Automaton ;) It is also quite resistant due to having several counterspells, aswell as drawing a bunch of cards through looters/Coastal Piracy effects.

@Hynth10 жыл бұрын
No problem, it may need some tuning if you look for cards IRL, since it's a 10tix MTGO deck. This means that some sets are unavailable and some cards may be hard to find.

Well, my LGS recently had a EDH tournament where we used one of the 2014 precons, and it was a 6 man free for all. I was black, and there was one green, 2 white, and 2 red. I knocked out 1 white and both red decks, so does that count as a budget deck winning? :D
@gheridarigaaz10 жыл бұрын
Yes... edric is now exclusively populated with 1 drops where it once was elf tribal on account of it being OP. It's actually never won me a game outside of 1v1 cause it comes out of the gates so strong and makes me a target. Besides with a commander that strong, it's not that big of a limitation. I have yet to test the deck.

if you are interested in brion, i recommend grafted exoskeleton, because killing a player with just one throw is satisfying. its also pretty cheap.

How does that angel stack thing work? you sac the angel when her ability is on the stack so that it doesnt resolve? that makes no sense to me, though Im new so I assume I got a lot to learn
@jacobstormann445210 жыл бұрын
When the angel hits the table it begins to exile the chosen creatures. If you sac her before the creatures are exiled they will remain exiled because the angel needs to die after they are exiled for the creatures to return.

I once used an Anax and Cymede deck to one shot someone playing a super money combo deck. My plan was simple. I cast a few enchantment cards that I could get back to hand and then started swinging like I had a bat glued to my hand. Its really hard to win sometimes when an angry guild of soldiers just decide they've had enough of your shit.

Well i guess you have to define budget. i personally never include lan base in budget as you can build a basic land base or more advanced. Since i own all shocks, filters and checks land base for me is free pretty much all the time. as for budget, excluding the lands My arcum was around 200 bucks. Now in comparison to a 4 person pod i was usually playing decks that dwarfed arcum in cost ($500.00+) so while arcum was not exactly cheap, when i have to 3v1 these expensive decks, it feels like budget overcame cost. I have also run a few budget decks that have won against better and more costly decks. Wort, boggat Auntie, Patron of the Moon, Thromok the Insatiable, Nin, the pain artist. excluding the cost of the lands these were all budget.

I didn't take my Nicol Bolas deck apart to build it, but I did build a budget Sol'kanar, the Swamp King EDH as an alternative, less bastard version grixis deck. The deck revolved around making my opponent's lands swamps or killing their creatures so they couldn't block Sol'kanar, and throwing curses at their face. Curse of thirst will end the game by itself if you just stall your opponent to death, which is hilarious.
