I started on the tenor banjo back in HS mid 60s Drove fr Tucson to the 1967 Contest when it was actually IN Topanga Canyon. David Lindley was the host announcer. This incredible 13 yr old fiddler blew everybody away with her rendition of "Mockingbird". Somewhere I have a reel to reel tape!

The older I get, the more I appreciate this music from my Oklahoma childhood. I now have another place to get to before it's oo late! I doubt that a linear presentation of the various categories and players would have been as enjoyable as this sort of freeform, variational joy fest.

This is fun to see. Around 1974 I was vacationing and visiting a friend on the west coast (I'm a banjo player from Arkansas) and the friend took me to this festival. It featured John Hickman and Pat Cloud - great players. Also many fine old time players and some beautiful instruments.

I was involved in the video production and we actually got "two, two, two mints in one!"-- musicians offering the results of months and months of practice, hoping to win a prize and send the link across the world to wherever friends and relatives are waiting. Then, the pressure's off and the fun begins. Much thanks to teresa crespo hartendorf for capturing all the fun. I'm watching this anew from a hospital bed, five years on and just keeps getting better!
