I've found that cleaning up the original video with Nyx and then doing the upscale with Iris (tweaking different settings depending on the source video) works phenomenal for animation. I have the 1980s Silverhawks series that I'm fully restoring (cleaning up audio, upscaling to 1080p, then color correcting scene by scene in Premiere) and the results I'm getting are far better than most official studio-released HD remasters I've seen from animated shows and movies. I have yet to get the results I want with live action, but I think that's just a matter of needing to play around more myself and learn some different tweaks.

I have walked through all the models and settings on some rather old(ish) home video (shot with a point and shoot digital camera from 2005-2007 era) in 640x480 (VGA) and carefully analyzed the previews just like you did in the video and without any doubt found that Nyx was doing the best job for my source video.

One thing I’ve found thru experimenting that you should try, select your enhance model, iris , set to manual ,click estimate (I set left secret to original "always". Go ahead and set all adjustments to "0" not all adjustments are far left for 0. Now preview, notice 0 has still added effect tho set all to 0 note I still set improve detail global option to 0. I have been lately using a preset 0 and using it when auto or manual + estimate w/ slight tweaks isn’t getting it done.

Good video. This comment isn’t anything upscaling related but rather frame interpolation. IMO, I leave it off for most media/content that’s owned by popular movie brands. I only leave it on as a choice for unofficial media/content that wasn’t owned by movie studios yet. It’s really personal preference. People can experiment on this and see which one they prefer over the original. There’s a list of video frame rates listed here that I prefer enhancing to: 10fps -> 60fps (x6) 15fps -> 60fps (x4) 24fps -> 48fps (x2; same as 50fps but with 2 frames removed) 25fps -> 50fps (x2; similar to 60fps but with slight jitteriness) 30fps -> 60fps (x2) 50fps and 60fps were left alone since they’re already recorded in those frame rates. I only enhance 24fps and 25fps 2 times so that I don’t lose any original frames when going over that. I like to have the new frames Ai creates in between its original frames. I don’t have this software but I have Flowframes which can only enhance frame rates but doesn’t do any upscaling.

Good video! But it would be nice if you can use a real world home made clip 480 or 720 video so you can see how well it work. I’ve tried the version before this one on one of my clip (480 to 1080p & even 4K). But the end result wasn’t that impressive. Plus it take almost 2 hrs for a 10 minute clip upscale into 4K…😬
@mayday68807 ай бұрын
Many people scales 480p up to 4k but this makes often no sense! You gain not more details by upscaling SD to 4k instead to 1080p. Best way is choose end resolution depending on how sharp the source allows *without artefacts* In other words: When you watch your result at the video native size, is it sharp or not? This indicates you have choosen the right resolution. For example when you have made a 4k unsharp video, then 4k makes no sense.

So, I have some thoughts on the demo trial version. I tried converting a video file that was 1868x1072 to 4k and after an hour it crashed my computer (and my computer is a beast of 16 core amd top of the line and 64 gigs of ram etc), but the file still converted only 28 minutes of it. After reviewing the 28 minutes it looked really solid it got rid of all the grainy look of an older tv show, however, a few draw backs did show up. Primary some of the girls makeup looked really filtered and photoshopped, and even a boys face looked a little off when it was a close up shot. For example, one of the boys close up the AI very clearly over exaggerated the nose and mouth wrinkle when he smiled and it looked weird since he was a teenager (it was like out of color black/dark lines for his wrinkles when he smiled) , but in fairness to the AI the wrinkles are indeed there in the original file, however the AI simply over does it in the clip and/or does the wrong/darker color. Also, another thing to consider is your actual monitor or tv source, so I was watching the converted file on my 5k monitor(and it wasn't as noticeable quality increase) but its a wide screen so its technically less than 4k, but after watching it on my 4k tv the results were very clear that the older 2010 kind of grainy quality was gone and the only real drawbacks was the random split second overly done wrinkles and certain makeup on women that looked kind of soap opera or washed out (I call it the Pretty little liars intro filter, and if you don't know what I mean watch the intro for that show). However, the rest looked either normal or really crisp good looking. So, It's kind of like 95% awesome, but that last 5% kind of breaks the illusion (and its since its mostly has drawbacks on close up shots it feels kind of random and breaks that illusion) and reminds you of the AI upscaling, so it's hard to give a solid score. It kind of reminds of VR, in that VR is amazing until your screen turns partially white during a movie or game (screen door effect) or you walk to the boundary, or the cord wraps around your leg and it breaks your immersion. AI upscaling is amazing just like VR but it has that last hurdle to kind of get over before it is 100% the standard and everyone will love. Another thing to consider when converting to 4k and that is that people's face's/ up close shots and if they have any imperfection's (e.g. pimples, acne, small bumps it is magnified with 4k and the AI will also make the imperfections stick out even More, so...yeah. Then if they are wearing makeup to try to cover it it up it still shows up and just looks weird, so its a little interesting to rewatch some older tv/movies to 4k...)

i mean, Ai is already creating images out of nothing. yeah, for example, since Ai struggles with symmetry, if there's a car in the distance, instead of Ai trying to upscale it, its simply going to use a 3D model over it and have its lighting/angle adjusted, what if image upscalers had a huge library of 3D assets, so no matter what you throw at them. they'll be capable of upscaling anything. Generic things like grass, trees and rocks are fairly easy to upscale as they don't require symmetry, but man-made objects are typically symmetrical, however, Ai still struggles with upscaling hair lmao, but yeah, technology is advancing at a rapid pace, its impossible to predict whats gonna pop up out of nowhere in 5 years@@pkbeast

As an "exercise" in upscaling this is a great tutorial, however since Blu-Ray "Hollywood" movies are very inexpensive, is it really worth the time and effort in trying to get "Blu-Ray" quality when in fact you're never going to really get Blu-Ray (HD) quality? Close, yes. But not quite there - yet. Also if one is looking for really, really, good quality, many movies are available in UHD (4K) disks. John Wick: Chapters 1-3 [4K UHD] for about $33USD or about $11 a disc seems reasonable. Not sure it's worth all the time and effort to try to get SD (approximately 480i or 480p) to HD and one can forget about UHD (about 4K). That said, there's alot (millions of hours?) of home movie footage (VHS, Beta, DV all SD) from the late 1970's to the mid 2000's that were not captured on 35mm movie film that can really use any kind of help it can get. This is where Topaz Video AI can make a difference since there is no other alternative available. Almost all theatrically released movies since the 1920's were shot with 35mm or 70mm film, there is (other than the expense) no problem remastering these films and making them look great on Discs (or streaming). Even some very famous TV series and "Soap Operas" were shot in SD, "All in the Family" comes to mind - and it ain't pretty, in fact it looks awful, by todays standards. The focus IMHO should be on trying to make the old consumer formats at least semi watchable on modern "big screen" TVs and since Topaz Video AI keeps getting better, this technology may be our only hope.

I would not recommend upscaling something that’s available on blu ray. I don’t do that. I chose John wick since I already had the trailer and I could then compare the results to the original 1080p quality. I use the program for content that’s not available on blu ray.

I have an old version of Topaz Video Enhance AI and I have to say I'm not impressed at all with this newer version. They STILL haven't fixed their AWFUL deinterlace feature. Aside from the layout, I see little change. So, why would I give them more money? I typically upscale cartoons & other animated material. My current version 2.6 will suffice for now. The newer versions don't make me want to shell out another $400 for it. They're going to need to improve greatly before it'll ever be worth the upgrade.
