Thanks for your review. Very informative! I’m curious, did you have to pay for shipping costs for the warranty work on the unit?
@Upscaled_HT7 сағат бұрын
The shipping was covered by Sony.

Old video I know. But a word of advice, do not stick, especially a Onkyo, or any AV receiver into a cabinet like this. There is zero airflow around this unit

how many movies can one normal person watch and how many times? Why save a movie on the drive forever? wtf?

Very sound logic. I can’t argue with that.

I knew 3D was really dead when 4KHDR came out without 3D support. HDR gives depth and would be amazing in 3D stereoscopic.

Thank you very much! I'll try that on one I just bought at an "for parts" price. I'm aware that there is no guarantee that it will work on all "Onkyo malady" victims, but your brief, to-the-point, and easy-to-follow instructions give me a good shot at succeeding.

My recently purchased Denon 3800 has 3D movie support and the fabulous Auro 3d sound field. I just hate not being able to digitally zoom 2:40 3D movies to 16x9 from my projector.

The highlights in HDR are just too bright. It's almost blindingly bright at times. I really don't understand the hype around it. It's unpleasant to watch.

Thanks for putting this video together, it’s been one of the best overviews I’ve seen and I’m nearly sold on the product. One question I have regarding the surround modeling - I have two sets of in-ceiling mounted atmos speakers. They are a few feet off of ideal placement due to constraints in the ceiling. Will this help fine tune that placement effectively? Or should I be looking for another solution like Dirac Live? TIA
@Upscaled_HT7 күн бұрын
I think this receiver or one with Dirac would work. I lot of people love Dirac due to how customizable it is. You can tweak the Sony but with Dirac you can do a lot more. Sony is simpler and it just gets you good sound very easily so that may benefit some. Depends how deep you want to go.

BGA chips suck, they use BGA in TVs and they are the number one failure. What I have found is it you gently prod the chip you can feel it move when the solder melts.

HLG is compatible with old SDR TVs, but no movie maker uses it. Those TV manufactures should send their TVs to VESA like PC monitors to get the DisplayHDR Certification in order to claim that they support HDR, if they fail the test from VESA, they shouldn't identify themselves as a HDR TV.

The problem with these home theaters in their own remote caves is nobody ever goes except the hobbyist and maybe his spouse. Most of the time you’re in this room all alone. People are just too busy nowadays to go to a friend’s home to watch a movie. Even the kids have their own lives and don’t go much. That’s why I put my theater right in my living room. It’s a 7.2 soon to be a 7.2.6 Atmos with room darkening drapes. There may be some sonic compromises but honestly I can’t hear them. The surround sound envelops and my 120 inch screen immerses and the room shakes and rattles when necessary and my seating is a common comfortable recliner love seat. My equipment is in plain sight and I wouldn’t have it any other way because I like looking at it while living my normal happy life. Even if I had 7 figures to spend I wouldn’t build a dedicated room. I like the theater to be integrated closely with my life. When people come over the big screen is right there in the living room and they often want a demo and I am happy to oblige. Watched Man of Steel this evening and what a fantastic surround sound movie with action and heart. I couldn’t possibly enjoy it any more in a separated space. I think dedicated home theaters are overwhelmingly underutilized. They sound like a good idea but unless it’s your hobby, they end up like outdoor kitchens. A novelty that gets used once in a while, except for the builder who finds himself within his creation alone most of the time. Movies are enjoyed so much more when you are watching with other people who care about and can discuss films and filmmaking. I’m lucky enough to be married to one of those! We watch every film on physical media, and usually watch all or most of the special features. Then discussion ensues which even gets lively at times!

Everything depends on source video you want to edit. I'm trying to remaster my Renegade tv series DVD's. Original dvd's are very low quality. They're way too blurry/soft. First I'd like to upscale them 2X.720x480 to 1440x960 I've tried different ai models and I do think that Iris Mq give the best overall look but there is one big disadvantage - faces in the distance are getting weird looking/distorted. Even if you change recover detail to 100%. - So Iris looks like pretty much useless when you're trying to upscale low quality dvd to hd. Artemis - Mq looks more friendly since it doesn't do that weird stuff with faces (at least not that much) But it's not as sharp as IRIS MQ. I'll also try and experiment with Proteus. Hope this info will help some of you.

There should be a balance between price and demand, which in this case price tips the scale. A product like this, if in reach to a broader market, could wipe out Roku and Apple TV without question.

I think Apple’s technology is advancing exponentially. They have lossless audio now which I pay bit more for on a monthly basis. If they come out with a player that offers Higher quality movies I would definitely sign up for it. I have an JVC 8K projector and I definitely see the picture quality difference between my Panasonic player vs Apple movies. I have the money, BUT I’m not paying $9k + for a Kaleidescape. Not worth it. I rather add a couple of Subwoofers or upgrade my speakers for that much money.

hdr has been made very sloppily, we just need 96bit chips instead of 64bit already, 64bit is extremely old already, 64bit chips are not made for so many colors as hdr has. it just won't work.

9:15 i don't get it when they rippws these films from a Bluray risk which comes with only 4K HDR 10 then how did they get Dolby Vision and 4k SDR ? btw SDR only looks good if its ripped from BLURAY which is 1080p re they using A.I since DVD FAB offers it? if that's the case i'm happy with the original verison which is HDR 10 but few films offers DOLBY VISION though like ALITA THE BATTLE ANGLE which 3D was far better seems to me than Blu-ray.

Very nice video, step by step information. I have a question. Do you also experience problems with some dts movie content? Specifically dts-hd master 5.1 or 7.1. Is shows a maximum bitrate of 1.5 mbps on plex playback information while the content has a much higher bitrate. It's only on some dts hd content, other dts hd content does work without issue. True hd atmos always works without issue. Did you encounter also such problem?
