TurboTax is used for filing your annual income tax return. Quicken is used for tracking your financial accounts. So they are two different products that do two different things. I use both of them.

Hi Ovies. I've answered this question for you a couple of times on my other Quicken videos. As you know, the U.S. version of Quicken is designed to work with U.S. financial institutions only, but it does support using multiple currencies. If you are only looking for a product to track and budget your finances, I would recommend Quicken Deluxe. Quicken doesn't support doing payroll. If you're just looking for a way to track payroll, you could set up your own categories and track it that way, but Quicken won't do the calculations for you. You may want to consider looking into QuickBooks instead, which has an option to add payroll functions. Thanks for the video , it made it easy to figure which quicken I would need. Do you find this better than intuit - quick books? I have an online version and it is all messed up. So was looking for something affordable I can put on the pc and use.

Quickbooks by Intuit is really more for small business which use double-entry bookkeeping. Quicken is my recommendation for tracking personal expenses or for small, home-based "Schedule C" businesses.

I have to agree with you, It had me so confused. I ordered quicken but with a disc, in case have to reload, or start over. I know Quickbooks had the self employed one, but did not track my sales so upgraded so could track my sales, and so messed up. I think I am going to be please with the Quicken Home and Business, because use a lot of my own funds. Thank you!

I've been using Quicken 2005 since.. well since 2005, and I'm very happy with that version. I only use Quicken to keep track of my checking account. I'm not interested in the other bells and whistles Quicken can do. I'll be purchasing a new PC soon and obviously it will be running Windows 10. Since I'm not sure if Quicken 2005 will run on Windows 10, I may have to consider purchasing this years edition. Can you tell me if the Starter edition will allow me to do the same things Quicken 2005 does? Also, is the current database structured the same as the 2005 edition; and if not, does the current version have an option that will import and convert the older databases to the new standard? I know you're not Quicken tech support, but I did come across your video and you seem knowledgeable, so I thought would ask anyway. Thanks :)

If you only need to track a checking account, Quicken Starter will work fine. However, Quicken Starter does not import from other versions of Quicken. If you want to import your existing data file, you'll need to get Quicken Deluxe.

Thanks for the information, it really helps! I purchased a new PC w/Windows 10 a couple months ago and did not upgrade Quicken at that time. I've still been using Quicken Starter Edition 2009, which is now giving me some problems. ( I know, I know, it's OLD). Anyhow, will the files from the 2009 version transfer to the 2017 version of Quicken Starter Edition.

Thanks for your info on Quicken. I use Quicken 2008 H&B on a Win 7 Pro/64 PC. I'm very soon switching to Win v10 Pro/64 PC (w/plenty of horsepower). I've read that I should probably purchase Quicken 2016 to get the maximum Win 10 compatibility. True ?? Also I think I need Deluxe ver because I want to import my Quicken 2008 data. True ? Lastly, with all the bell & whistles of recent versions, does Quicken 2016 still have check register view & custom report capability ?????

+Jack Walleigh Yes, Quicken 2016 still shows your check register and has custom reports. You should be able to install it and import your Quicken 2008 file with no problems.

I am currently using Quicken Rental Property 2014 and am considering upgrading to 2017 Deluxe. Will it transfer my files (except the tenant and rental property files) or am I locked into the Rental Property version

Yes it will. If you have problems or decide you need the rental property tools after all, you can always add those features to the Deluxe version for a smaller cost than having to go out and buy the Rental Property version in full after already paying for Deluxe. To add additional features to Deluxe, just go to the Help menu, then click on "Add Rental Property Tools".

Rental property manager includes everything in the Starter Edition. If you get Rental Property Manager, you get everything Quicken has.

No, you don't need to buy it each year. It will be fully functional for three years. After three years, you will no longer be able to download transactions from your bank or synchronize with the mobile app, but you can still enter transactions manually. Most people upgrade every three years to keep the full functionality.

I'm not sure what you mean when you say it has disappeared. If you need to reinstall it on your computer, you can use the original CD you purchased. If you downloaded it from Amazon, you can find a link to your installation file in your Amazon software library. If you can't find your original installation media, you may need to purchase the 2017 version.

You can track asset depreciation in Quicken by creating a new account, choosing "Asset" as the type, and entering the original value. Then you can manually update the asset value as you depreciate it. If you use TurboTax for filing your taxes, it will track and depreciate assets automatically from year to year. John, You would create an asset account in Quicken for the item you are tracking. Then whenever you want to depreciate it, you just enter a transaction in the account register for that asset with a decrease in value (similar to entering a debit or credit to a checking account). The total value of the asset will reflect the updated amount.
