I worked on ic-breaking supply boats in Canada's arctic. The company built a ship called the Kigoriak - a class 4 breaker - it can maintain continuous over-the ground speed in 4 feet of first year ice. A design feature was her bow was wider than her hull - they were called reamers - which aided maneuverability. 2 x 12,500 shp Sulzer diesels into a single massive CP propeller housed in a Kort nozzle. The prop and nozzle were deep under the hull so didn't plug too often - but it's the biggest draw-back of the design. She punched above her weight - easily breaking through 2m of first year ice. Too bad she wasn't mentioned.

Excuse me but Helsinki was NOT in former USSR. Helsinki is the capitol of Finland. The Taimyr frame was made in Finland Wärtsilä Shipyard 1989. Reactors were installed in St. Petersburg in Russia.

You know what - all of the 15 most powerfull icebreakers are Russian! All of them. It is just like all top 10 most venomous snakes in the world are Australian! So is it. The Swedish, US and Japanese (I stopped watching when the Oden came up) don’t classify (bu far) to be included. Please be correct, even when you don’t like the facts.

Interesting to note that icebreakers don’t plot through ice but actually drive up onto the ice and let the weight of the bow break the ice. That’s probably why they are all so heavy eh! 🇨🇦

The title of the video is Top 15 Most POWERFUL Icebreaking Ships, аnd then you started showing the weakest Icebreaking Ships in the world. It is useless to make such a video because all 15 of the most powerful icebreakers are in one country, Russia. Compared to Russian icebreakers, all other icebreakers in the world can hardly be called the most powerful.

Finland is very much depend on ice brakers at winter time, but power is not everything, for every icebraker and tugs body structure and agility are more important than raw power, specially in finland there is so much tiny islands that huge size is not advantage, other thing is that in Finland icebrakers are also used as 'tugs' to pull ships trough difficult areas so it is very important that that function works also.

Agreed! If money is an issue. I have a solution!!! Read me out here. SpaceX has released a beta sign up for the Starlink internet. This is for people in northern latitudes. Sign up for the beta. Then tweet Elon Musk. Tell him you need $750,000,000. So you can build an ice breaker that can hold about 3000 people. Then tell him that it might be a good idea to have(insert long list of Cruse things). If he asks why you that (list of Cruse things) Tell him they will need it to celebrate the Success of Starlink. If he says what if it fails? You say ICEBREAKING CRUISE SHIP!!!!!!! DREAMS TO REALLY.

It cleary clearly doesn't make any sense to pollute the sensible arctic environment with diesel engines. Nuclear reactors are clean and powerful while save and extremely low carbon emissions. The American and Asian ship yards should buy the powerhouse from the Russian and put their electric propulsion systems feed by nuclear.

Why dont you make somekinda ice destroyer GEAR in the front of the ship, u know, like the sharp teethed giant wheels atached to the front of the ship to literally destroy the ice not just ride above it and break it?? Put a high torque diesel engine on the wheels and spin in just 1000rpm and you will be ready to destroy even 5 meter thick of ice with ease and much smaller ships. 😉

Nuclear power technology today is unbelievably more safe than back in its earlier decades. If more countries were smart, they would start to switch over using nuclear energy. They are essentially meltdown proof nowadays, and the process of waste disposal is environmentally safe. You don’t have to believe me, but feel free to read up on the topic from reputable scientific sources.

Rusia have largest icebreaker fleet in the world. USA have only couple and low icebreakers. The US has no equipment for the polar regions. Only nuclear icebreakrs have power for long and strong work.
