I had a Disco 1, hated it, too much body roll to even think about feeling safe, now own a Disco 3. Major engine issues plague the diesel engines not the petrol, don't put them all down because of misinformation spread by Toyota owners. Disco 3 beats the renowned 80 series by miles. Its the most capable stock from the factory 4wd out there at that time.

Yeah that's true but as a Land Rover owner I know that any Land Rover of the same year of any Jeep Cherokee when they're both working factory-spec the Landrover is light-years ahead in the off-road system. I drive a Land Rover Discovery Series 2. It's a 2002 model and I do not know of any early 2000 SUV that can follow me without lockers. Solid axle crazy articulation and super aggressive traction control with a manual mode in low range as torque reduction and the benefits of what Emmanuel can do like taking off in 2nd 3rd or 4th in low range and locking it in that gear for certain Terrain. Even the Toyota a track copies the old Land Rover traction control in fact the AM General Hummer in 1996 adopted the exact wabco ABS traction control that Land Rover started using on the Discovery 2 and Range Rover P38. It doesn't brakes both Wheels though it just on the axle just one and transfers the power immediately not shaking and acting weird how even new Toyotas with traction control do

To me personally this video is missing 2 (or 3) even more capable offroad vehicles: The Pinzgauer, (and the Haflinger) and the Volvo C303 Also the part about the Merceds G starts with an Error. At it's introduction in 1979 four different engines were offered, but not the 250GD. You could get a 230GE and 280GE as well as the 240GD and the 300GD. The 230 was a 4 cyl gasoline/petrol engine, the 280 an inline 6. The 240 and 300 were both NA Diesels with 4 and 5 cylinder layout. The 250GD replaced the 240GD in 1988. So 9 years after the G-class went on sale. The second mistake: the military got their vehicles at the same time, so it wasn't after a former military vehicle. It was first develloped for the military (the Shah of Persia wanted one for his military, but after the revolution in his country Mercedes also turned to the idea of a civlian version. Also it's not to show that Mercedes could build one, as they knew that they lacked the knowledge at the moment it all started and cooperated with offroad Sepcialist Steyr Daimler Puch in Austria. The cooperation is still ongoing today, even though the Steyr part is now owned by Magna. But all G-classes were and are still made in the same place. In Graz, Austria.

This list is good but not truly representative of the global thinking. I can understand the Willy’s Jeep’s place in this list as if was god feather of off roading today but all the other American models dont fit on this list. The willy’s in out of the box trim is really good but extremely limited in horse power and torque for todays off roading challenges without modifications. I can understand patriotism but the facts are they dont belong on this list (apart from the willy’s jeep) unless this list is based on the American market alone. Then i would agree. But on a global scale the best Off Road vehicle is the Toyota Land Cruiser 79 series. I have owned a few of the models that you have listed in your clip (including the Willy’s) and i can tell you that the 79 series will easily out perform any of the makes or models you have presented in the off road category. Even the Russian Lada would be high on your list for its off road capabilities. I dont mean to be disrespectful with my comments. I am simply stating the facts i know on a global scale. I have done expeditions on 5 continents in every condition imaginable testing different makes and models, so i have some knowledge about off roading. Again i dont mean to be disrespectful in any away or insulting.

How can you say that the Land Rover was the first mass produced 4X4 for civilians? The Jeep CJ2A was made at LEAST since 1946, 2 years earlier than Land Rover. And BTW, Land Rover was made from aluminum because they were bought in large numbers by sheep farmers, and aluminum didn't corrode when exposed to sheep piss. And JEEP should have been number 1.

You want to go off roading? Get a dirt bike. There, it can go more places than any of these vehicles. BTW, I drove those WWII jeeps in the hills of Korea (3 tours tactical). Narrow roads, slick mud, snow, rain back in the 70s. No wonder why I don't go off road anymore nor do I go camping... Thank you US Army, 10 years of tactical units broke me of wanting to sleep in a poncho, in the rain and snow, ever again.... Those jeeps flipped sideways if you were not careful. They were real narrow. They were terrible at Ft Irwin, CA's shale hills, in the desert (tank training areas). They did OK on the hills of Ft Hunter Leggett, CA and Ft Ord, CA.

Mmmm most off-road vehicles in this video are not known world over. Making me wonder what type of criteria was used to come up with the list. For me I think the best off-road vehicle is the Toyota Land Cruiser, there is a reason why even the UN and other NGOs chose it as their primary vehicle. In that list only a few vehicles with the same pedigree as the Land Cruiser were mentioned, the Nissan Patrol, Range Rover, and Land Rover Defender, but good video enjoyed it

When off-roading we should know the limits of vehicle, terrain and skills, where to give up, park and leave our machine (bike or 4x4) in better route and use our legs and backpack to discover some difficult routes/places. This is my sustainable off-roading conclusion. Do not be stubborn agains nature, you can’t win, cost could be painfully high.

@@fredfred4086 not true I can point you to at least three pre 1950 land rovers still working for a living and Land Rover bodies don't rust because they are aluminium. The Land Rover also has a stronger chassis less likely to warp because it's aĺ steel box tubes. Correction it actually has a proper chassis which in the case of the Land Cruiser is a debatable point.
@fredfred4086
@fredfred4086 Жыл бұрын
@@mothmagic1 It is true. Value for money is a factual, measurable thing. Ask the accountants for the numerous multi billion dollar mining companies, NGO's and the UN who choose to use Toyotas. Land Rovers are very capable 4wd's, and many companies have copied their strong design features. Reliability and product life cycle value are measurable facts - not emotional thoughts.

A Niva is too small for the average American and they only know automatic cars... They don't understand how a simple vehicle outperforms most of the things listed here lol, while they struggle in the mud you just pass over with a Niva and you still have some time to repair it with your hammer and sickle and drive away That's clearly the best just for his price, capabilities and maintenance and when you go off-road with it you are not afraid to break it 🤭

Seems to be a selective group here with other excellent vehicles barely if at all getting honorable mention. For example, the Jeep XJ Cherokee civilized the 4x4 concept and started the SUV revolution. I personally can testified it can go anywhere you might demand of it and with not much effort. To this day the XJs are consider indestructible. Another vehicle is the Nissan XTerra. It was designed to compete with Jeep and Toyota which I can testify does quite well. Like the Jeep XJ, the XTerra is a very competent 4x4 and indestructible.

The Jeep M38/CJ2A and CJ3A are tiny and simple but go anywhere machines. The best all around has to be the J40 Toyota Land Cruiser. The worst has to be all Land rovers ! One of their biggest set backs has to be the excessive weight of the tool box required to continuously fix the stupid things. The Humvees are just down right ridiculous.
