I don't know, he was the one who brought up Billie flirting with Clarkson. I read that more as "i don't know how far im allowed to take this at 8pm on BBC 2" As for Clarkson being a bit old to make that comment, well he was certainly a lot older rhan Billie, but he's only 6 years older than her ex husband. In fact, proportionaly it was a far smaller age gap than her first marriage, where she proposed.

David can mention a slight innuendo like ‘buttering parsnips’ because they’re very good mates & it’s just teasing a friend. He knows her well enough that she wouldn’t be offended. Jeremy however is not her friend. Which is why David can be seen visibly uncomfortable.
