When they were conceptualizing the characters for the show Toph was going to be a buff guy. But, they went in a completely different direction. And, it works out greatly. Toph uses vibration to interact with the world. And, she uses a different marital art style than the rest of the earth benders. She received her knowledge from the original badger moles, and that gives her the potential to do things no one else could even dream of. It's also a good reason why Avatar is such a universally loved show. The women aren't damsels to be saved from whatever by some big strong guy. There are people, regardless of gender, that are just as important. I love showing this show to my daughter.

Yeah the silhouette of the earth bender in the opening is an early design for Toph. That model is repurposed in season three for the character Sud. Side note i do not consider mentioning Sud a spoiler because unless you are a hard core fan you probably do not know who Sud is.

Credit where credit is due - having Toph be a young blind girl was the contribution of Aaron Ehasz exclusively; the creators thought it was a dumb idea and strongly resisted it, but luckily many of Aaron's ideas won out in the end. The nuance and depth he and his writing team contributed to the story of Avatar is sorely missed in Legend of Korra.

The whole Earth Rumble 6 thing is a big parody on WWE-style wrestling (hence "The Boulder" making mannerisms like The Rock.) Fire Nation Man is what's referred to as a "heel" in pro wrestling. Since pro wrestling is also half soap opera (and all the fans know it, trust me,) he's basically just there to be someone for the audience to boo at and make the stars look better.

Very few characters have the potential to suplant Iroh or Appa as the big fan favorite but Toph gives them a good run for it. On a more serious note i do appreciate that this episode explores the reality that parents meaning well but acting selfishly is bad for children. So many parents of specifically disabled children defend their toxic, neglectful or abusive behavior as loving because the intention is good. Saying i mean well there for i cannot harm my child. This show is only of the only shows that tears that idea down. Saying you mean well is not a defense. The audience is with Toph when she runs away to escape her parents crappy behavior and get the life she wants.

I always forget how weird this episode is for non-wrestling fans. Some context The Boulder is voiced by wrestler Mick Foley, but the 3rd person speaking and general vibe is based one Dwayne “The Rock” Johnson Fire Nation Man is based on Nikolai Volkoff, a Russian that would sing the Russian National Anthem before his matches. The masked bender is based on Mexican Lucha Libre wrestlers The Hippo is a different reference. Calling back to King Hippo from Mike Tyson’s Punchout.

If someone asks u to show a strong female character in animation media u show them Toph. Its an Obligation. Her introduction is one of the best introductions i hv seen in any form of media. Fun fact: The Boulder was designed after a particular wrestler and wanted him for the part, but due to scheduling conflicts, he couldn't make it (honestly the og va for the Boulder was hilarious), but hearing the guy they had in mind saying it would have been hilarious considerong his stage name: "The Rock" (Yep, Dwayne Johnson)

tophs vision is not superior to daredevils its not even a fraction of his and hers is limited to using earth bending, daredevils is more than just vibrations but every sense his senses are insane to the point he has a superhuman touch in which he can sense the faint impressions of ink on a page allowing him to read by touch, feel the minute temperature and pressure changes of the atmosphere around him Even with his senses of smell and hearing blocked, he can feel the presence of a person standing five feet away from him simply by his or her body heat and disturbance of air A side effect of his sense of touch is Murdock's ability to manipulate his muscles and internal organs. The sense of touch is not just external, but internal too (central nervous system), thereby giving him the ability to have total body control, increasing his strength and speed to peak human levels, his agility and reflexes to superhuman levels, and also giving him the ability to numb himself to pain. his blindsight doesn't just let him feel the things around him but his brain literally visually inteprates his surroundings so he could for example know what a person looks like Murdock's sense of hearing enables him to detect an acoustic pressure change of one decibel at a pressure level of seven decibels (whereas the lowest threshold for average human hearing is twenty decibels). He can hear a person's heartbeat at a distance of over twenty feet, or people whispering on the other side of a standard soundproofed wall he also has minor telapathic abilties to put it simply if tophs senses were as good as daredevils she would have been able to dodge Aangs attack
