Topic: Basic knowledge of Mpox. A project of the AIDS-Hilfe Krefeld e.V.
This is Tom. Tom has already heard about Mpox, but he doesn't really know a lot about it! Do you know?
Since May 2022, an outbreak is no longer recorded only in Africa, but worldwide.
Mpox is a rare viral disease caused by the Mpox virus (MPXV).
But how do I notice an Mpox infection?
The virus triggers skin changes, some of which are painful. These usually start on the face and in the genital or anal area.
During the Mpox infection, general symptoms such as fever, headache, muscle or back pain and swelling of the lymph nodes may occur.
But how is the Mpox virus actually transmitted?
The Mpox virus is transmitted through body fluids that contain particularly large numbers of viruses. These include the fluid of the blisters, as well as crusts and scabs.
Transmission is possible with close skin contact, for example during cuddling or sex.
In risk areas, infection can also occur through sharing bed linen or clothing.
How is Mpox diagnosed and treated?
Mpox is detected by a smear test. Check with your local health office to find out where you can take such test.
Mpox usually heals on its own after two to four weeks. No treatment is necessary in most cases.
The course of the disease is rarely severe, so that treatment of the symptoms in hospital is necessary. The virus can be fatal in very few cases.
But how can you protect yourself?
At present, only vaccination is considered safe protection. It is especially recommended for men who have many changing sexual partners, as well as for people who have had contact with an infected person within the last two weeks.
You have Mpox? Then protect others by adhering to the quarantine!
Important! Have you been in contact with someone with Mpox? Do you have noticeable skin changes? Then inform yourself at your local health office about vaccination, treating doctors or quarantine regulations.
Tom is now informed. He has made an appointment for vaccination.
Are YOU informed now? Then tell your friends, your family or share this video on social media.
