Good afternoon Brian, This lake used to be owned by the Walt Keeler company back in the 60's - 70's. Don't know when they finally sold it & the property. This is a cool piece of property on the west side of Wichita. ❤ I'm glad your cleaning/Clearing it up. This place use to be kept up.....they would ride their boat's, ski dos, out to the island to fish, BBQ, campfires, camping.... fond memories

It was a mistake to cut down the vegetation on the edge of the island, the excitement will follow. The trees and all the vegetation help prevent further eroding and disappearing. Cleaning it of garbage and organizing it a little would be ideal but plants are fundamental.

Just because they trimmed down the vegetation doesn't mean it's gonna cause erosion because they left the roots and everything still growing they just cut the overgrowth down, and dead trees aren't going to help the looks and functionality of the island

the ground vegetation will quickly grow again.. and the cleared areas will be safer and the island easier to use the way they like it to be used. This is not a 'natural' area. It has historically been used for recreation according to others who have posted. I agree that the heavy clearing will aid erosion, however the low vegetation will quickly regrow and hold back the erosion as it has been doing. Even after big burns in the forests to encourage new growth, the ground growth is quickly back. I really like that the bulk of the dead trees were cut back and burned up for safer usage. Yes, the wood could have been cut and stacked for the recreational crowd. But cutting and stacking wood is a lot of work. Done that for years.. It would have taken a week to cut that much wood and stacking it, In my opinion.. Used to cut 7-9 cords a year for a high altitude cabin.. fully heated by wood stove, and using only partially burned wood from previous forest fires, helping to clear up dead wood in the forests and also heating our cabin (-40 in the winter for our cabin).

@SharperMind123
@SharperMind123 5 күн бұрын
I agree with suemasongreen. I love a neat yard and keep mine squared away… But I’m also constantly building habitat for birds/hummingbirds/butterflies/other species etc. I see no reason to clear a natural habitat. One can certainly “think about” removing the dead growth of a tree… But even a dead tree is habitat for birds, insects, etc. This is Man’s folly to make the Earth the way he wants to see it, instead of the way it’s meant to exist naturally and function.

You do realize by removing those plants at the waters edge that would have trapped more sand. The island will now degrade more as more sand is eroded away. Plants and roots act to stabilize erosion.

My guess is that to preserve the island if the company that owns it would be willing to introduce some indigenous vegetation to the sandy soil that could minimize or stop the erosion. And also add a layer of small rock along the shoreline that wiil hold the sand. (I used to to do this kind of work professionally to restore eroded riverbanks and lake shores.) Great job though, the little island has alot of potential.

Rule of thumb for trees in harsh environments like this, whatever part of it is green, leave it alone. You cut out massive living oaks on an island in the middle of a lake. The amount of damage you've done to the erosion control against wind and water is way more than you'd think.

Living here in The Great Lakes state (Michigan) and being an outdoors lady, I understand the importance of the vegetation along and around lakes. Our DNR ( Department of Natural Resources) have laws governing these areas. In many instances it's illegal to change the coastline of our lakes. Wild life depend on these natural ocourances for shelter, shade and food. You both worked very hard on this project, but it's not my favorite scenario. I think it would have been nice to clear paths and have left stumps for sitting on and enjoying nature in its natural state.
@Dr..Spyder
@Dr..Spyder Ай бұрын
Welp this isn't Michigan for starters but it is America 🇺🇸 and it's a man made island and in AMERICA MAN can do whatever they want with their island. Plus now I don't know if it's just me but I noticed birds like geese or ducks can actually walk around on the island now. But you keep on crying about it. Maybe call the mayor and let him know about your issues.

As the bushes were just cut down and not actually removed, they will soon spring back to life. Necessary to prevent wind erosion of the sand on the island. Periodic cutting back will be good to aid fresh growth, but take care not to create an erosion problem. Also some dead wood of fallen trees provides a great habitat for birds and wild life.

I mean if it was my island. I would ask that you clear a reasonable area in the center of the island and a path to it for camping. But leave the rest as it is cause that's natural homes for animals. And even though you made the island look more suitable for humans. Your damaging the health of the island over all. But that's my opinion.

That's not just your opinion, that's a fact. I don't know why YT pushed this video to my feed, but I'm disgusted. What's attractive to humans, is not what's best for nature. The word that comes to mind is hubris. It's one thing to clean up a lawn. But leave nature to be nature. I just have to say it. This guy is a f'n idiot.

I agree a thousand percent.... I saw a little creature along the edge of the water what's going to happen to him? And do they think cleaning it up is going to stop the erosion of the island 😅 it's going to erode faster now and where do you think the spider's and cockroaches are going to go.... straight to their venue building, serve em right Idk... I just think people need to start thinking more about nature and what effect their actions have on it Sorry for my rambling

That's the trouble humans take enough of natures/wild life's homes, for god's sake leave them somewhere safe and secure to live in . :(

Grass holds back erosion not trees. The underbrush will continue to grow and hold back erosion.

I love being able to look through the trees now. I hope the grasses (and weeds) grow back some to slow down the erosion. So who’s Steve?

Pretty cool! I don’t think that anyone else has cleaned up an island! You really had to be innovative to get rid of the debris and power up your tools. Great job!😊( I know you had fun throwing those bugs in the fire 😅).

This does look like it would be fun to do. But why are those darn cockroaches EVERYWHERE!! Now the owners need to get some groundcover started and maintained. Great outcome and break from the usual yards.

Oh boy... Put me on the list of those who think the island was mutch nicer before. Sorry, some natural scenery is sometimes better than cleaned lawn. And yes i do believe erosion will go faster. In my province, you are not allowed to cut vegetation on the lake shores except to have an access point.

I think the property owner needs to plant some sort of ground-cover to mitigate the erosion. Even if the island isn’t used, it looks so much better with the overgrowth gone. Great job, guys!
