Good afternoon Brian, This lake used to be owned by the Walt Keeler company back in the 60's - 70's. Don't know when they finally sold it & the property. This is a cool piece of property on the west side of Wichita. ❤ I'm glad your cleaning/Clearing it up. This place use to be kept up.....they would ride their boat's, ski dos, out to the island to fish, BBQ, campfires, camping.... fond memories

I agree with suemasongreen. I love a neat yard and keep mine squared away… But I’m also constantly building habitat for birds/hummingbirds/butterflies/other species etc. I see no reason to clear a natural habitat. One can certainly “think about” removing the dead growth of a tree… But even a dead tree is habitat for birds, insects, etc. This is Man’s folly to make the Earth the way he wants to see it, instead of the way it’s meant to exist naturally and function.

As the bushes were just cut down and not actually removed, they will soon spring back to life. Necessary to prevent wind erosion of the sand on the island. Periodic cutting back will be good to aid fresh growth, but take care not to create an erosion problem. Also some dead wood of fallen trees provides a great habitat for birds and wild life.

My guess is that to preserve the island if the company that owns it would be willing to introduce some indigenous vegetation to the sandy soil that could minimize or stop the erosion. And also add a layer of small rock along the shoreline that wiil hold the sand. (I used to to do this kind of work professionally to restore eroded riverbanks and lake shores.) Great job though, the little island has alot of potential.

Living here in The Great Lakes state (Michigan) and being an outdoors lady, I understand the importance of the vegetation along and around lakes. Our DNR ( Department of Natural Resources) have laws governing these areas. In many instances it's illegal to change the coastline of our lakes. Wild life depend on these natural ocourances for shelter, shade and food. You both worked very hard on this project, but it's not my favorite scenario. I think it would have been nice to clear paths and have left stumps for sitting on and enjoying nature in its natural state.

the ground vegetation will quickly grow again.. and the cleared areas will be safer and the island easier to use the way they like it to be used. This is not a 'natural' area. It has historically been used for recreation according to others who have posted. I agree that the heavy clearing will aid erosion, however the low vegetation will quickly regrow and hold back the erosion as it has been doing. Even after big burns in the forests to encourage new growth, the ground growth is quickly back. I really like that the bulk of the dead trees were cut back and burned up for safer usage. Yes, the wood could have been cut and stacked for the recreational crowd. But cutting and stacking wood is a lot of work. Done that for years.. It would have taken a week to cut that much wood and stacking it, In my opinion.. Used to cut 7-9 cords a year for a high altitude cabin.. fully heated by wood stove, and using only partially burned wood from previous forest fires, helping to clear up dead wood in the forests and also heating our cabin (-40 in the winter for our cabin).

I love the idea of cleaning up an island! 😁 That said, I have a little constructive criticism. 😮💨 So, because it's not a lawn, it really needed special considerations such as; 1) All of that drift wood would have been worth a fortune! More importantly, though, it adds visual interest to an otherwise uninteresting heap of sand. 2) The vegetation and even the dead or uprooted trees on the island are what has kept it from eroding away completely. Cutting everything but the living trees exposes it to the unrestrained forces of wind and water. And, 3) The fallen/dead trees, grasses, branches in and over the water, and even the dead vegitation provide crucial habitat for the evolution of the island. For instance, the uprooted trees and logs in and over the water provide spaces for fish/fry, frogs/tadpoles, crayfish, etc. All of which help the island grow from a home for spiders and roaches into something someone would actually *want* to spend time at. I think your video was a great idea! And you guys certainly put in a great deal of work. I just would have liked to see a more intentional cleanup. 😒 In any case, thanks for the video! 🥰
@Dr..Spyder2 ай бұрын
You are 100 percent absolutely wrong and you really do think you have a very intelligent strong opinion. But no you are absolutely wrong. One small clean up of a small island helped the island. You really want to think you are extremely smart and people enjoy your opinions. It is truly unbelievable the comments of this video act like they ruined a wildlife sanctuary island experts. Obviously there is nothing there and ducks and goose can build nest lay eggs because that is all that's there. It's so much better now and safer for people. I know you can't stand people probably even can't stand your own self. It is now so much better for everything. Winter is coming would have killed everything and next year new growth and new life on the island. Not to mention one good lighting strike on that island could have burned the island down completely. You truly are a Karen and you got the list for the manager to prove you are a Karen. Try to have a better day. Plus life isn't always about money from drift wood I could find so called driftwood all day. Ps I can definitely tell you're not getting any "DRIFTWOOD" if ya know what I mean 😉

Maybe the owners will decide it is worth the money to barge over some soil to save it and the remaining trees. Either way with all the dead wood taken down it would make a nice place to picnic or fish and have barbeques again. Sometimes it take a second look to see the possibilities. That was a lot of hard work for the two of you and you did a wonderful job. 😎

The fact that this is sped up makes the traffic in the distance sound like you guys are just casually ignoring a zombie apocalypse from the safety of your little island.

Brian what a top notch transformation on the island. It looks so inviting now and hopefully it will be visited at some point in the not too distant future and enjoyed by all who visit. WOW❤

Awesome video. I was surprised by your mistake with the mower. I'm glad you didn't get hurt. It's a very small island with a lot of dead stuff. Those were nice fires. I hope someone will use it now.

Brian, I am from Northern Lower MICHIGAN, and get a lot of beautiful driftwood in our rivers and lakes. A really good master woodcrafter, furniture maker can make some of the most gorgeous furniture from it. Looks like a treasure-trove of it there.
