Ha Ha, a man after my own heart. I had two Clark CT50 tugs around here for years. Got 'em at auction for a few hundred each. Perkins 4.248 diesels. Used one as a donor to replace the engine in a Versatile 150 bi-directional tractor, and the other was used as a go cart for the amusement of guests for many years. Cheers!

Mr Josh, I have operated a mechanical grader like you have by your shop. I'm only 45 years old but I have a love for machines like you do. I was told by a senior operator he operated that grader when he was 12-13 year old, it was pulled by a 22 Cat crawler tractor. He told me it took all day to scrape the road in front of his house, he would eat lunch when he was going by his house, and knock off fairly close to passing by the other way. He told me the himself and the Guy pulling him wore a set of track rails and sprockets out pulling the grader and it was still tight as a tick when I was playing with it. I felt privileged to be able to go back in time like that to appreciate what we have today.

The military tug is a great helper around your place . I was with our Air National Guard unit at Savanna Georgia in our motor pool and we didn't have anything to do for two weeks . A buddy asked me if I was interested in drag racing the tugs , well hell yeah I was . He got on a newer tug and I got an old one with a flathead slant six and his was an OHV powered tug . I had a good idea the old flathead would be a little looser and the governor would let it run faster . Well we raced numerous times and I was undefeated . We had a lot of fun until the motor sargeant got back and we got the tugs hid before he could see us . He knew we had been up to no good but nobody said anything about what we had been doing . Great summer camp . Great video .

If you think that key-way was sloppy, it's nothing compared to the small chainsaw I picked up a while ago at our local refuse site retain shop (Tip Shop). The flywheel and crankshaft were chopped out really badly and had so much slop that I can't understand how the saw still ran. I had to replace both the crankshaft and the flywheel, but I had spares from an identical saw that had a broken crankcase. So I was able to make one good saw out of two useless pieces of unusable junk. Always satisfying when a repair is successful.

Back in the ‘60 my dad had a Clark tug and he installed a hand operated push blade to back fill ditches. That lasted a week until he went hydraulic. We even installed a 1947 Chrysler flat head six. Very powerful, think I remember where that tug is, might see if it’s available. My opinion, great job, and skills.👍👍👍

Nice repair on the steam tractor pulley. Set up your Carlton with a chuck, and teach your helper how to use it. Rough drill everything and save lathe time. That thing will drill anything! I know!!,, K,,,

To Shrink bushings well try DRY ICE AND ACETONE. THE MIXTURE OF THE TWO BECOMES WAY COLDER THAN THE DRY ICE ALONE

I always measure the bore and set a tele gauge or inside mic a little above the shaft dia. That way there is no guessing the expanded bore size when heating. Maybe not period correct but an end cap for the shaft would guarantee the flywheel never falls off and negate the need for a tapered key.

This is a very cool project and it turned out great. I really like your tug, great for moving trailers around. It would be interesting to see a video on setting up the slotter. We went to a steam show last weekend and we will post a video of the show on saturday. It is interesting that the full size and scale models you have are different in design to what we have over here.

You did a great jog of repairing that flywheel/pully and you have a very good workshop. I would like to add two comments, I would have machined the bore true to the outside diameter and installed a scotch key between the sleeve and the flywheel. From Australia

Dry ice and rubbing alcohol will get down to -110 F/ -80 C which is pretty good even though liquid nitrogen is -320 F/ -196 C. Works a lot better putting the part in a liquid than just packing dry ice around it. I've used this successfully for motorcycle bearings.

i have seen unregulated CO2 used. put the part in a small box and run a hose straight from the tank. a 3 second blast from the tank will make it really cold. hope this helps.

I cringed, when I saw that original "adaptor ", that was horrible, excellent engineerd repair Josh. Surprising how much a standard freezer can shrink a part, mild steel to cast iron is fairly forgiving, always liked the Gib head keys, just look right. Nice engine, great video, great photography 👍. Mostly because of the flex of the pulley from the forces of the 4 jaw. I've done a few different things similar to this. You always set up off the OD, and fine tune the ID. It's the best way I have found to do these.

I agree with Ellie Price. It's always nice to have the od and faces running true. Won't get it necessarily indicating the bore. That key is highly stressed every revolution as the flywheel goes through powered to momentum cycles twice per revolution. A couple thousandths of slop in the key will produce a considerable knock in the engine. I drill and tap crankshaft ends and turn up a keeper plate to keep flywheels in place. Also need two screws in the plate or one roll pin to act as a rotation lock. The key would serve here in a slotted retainer plate.

If you want a liquid nitrogen tank, try asking around with dairy or beef cow semen suppliers. I have a dairy background so I am familiar with this. Your video reminded me that I was going to ask the local ABS guy about an N tank for my shop. He said a new tank was $800, used could be had for $2-300. $40 to refill it. There should be a decent supply of good used tanks around as the bull semen industry is pretty proactive about replacing tanks. There can be mid 5 digit values of product in those tanks, they don’t want to risk having a tank failure. For repair shop use the value loss on a tank failure should be minimal.

Last time I did a big shrink fit, not even the farmers had any. The other problem is getting it filled. I know it's hard to understand just how bad this region is, I can't even get a tooling rep to stop out. I have a CO2 tank with siphon tube and dry ice maker now, so it should help.

@@TopperMachineLLC Yea, I wasn’t sure what you had readily available in your area. The guy I talked to about a nitrogen tank actually suggested using a dry ice/alcohol bath. He thought that would generate a bath temperature of around -120; I wonder if that wouldn’t be better in some ways than the crazy cold -320 that liquid N is. I worry about affecting the metalurgy at those low temps. I also recently ran across something called an industrial freezer which had a small box compared to a consumer type food freezer and was said to be capable of producing temperatures around -100.

What are the pros and cons of a slotter versus a shaper? It seems like they do the same job but the slotter is inherently be more rigid because it is pressing it against itself, sort of like a c-clamp? What jobs can one do that the other cannot?

Extremely common on the old stuff. Tapered gib key. Usually a 1⁰ taper.

Several. Afraid of breaking the pulley in the chuck, sticking the hub(which did happen), pressing it in, almost every step touching that pulley. Glad it's done, but it was fun also.

I wouldn't of thought a .002 press fit would of caused any problems on the press? Have you seen issues with a pulley press fit before?

I have seen some problems. Mostly when there are unseen cracks in the cast. In this case, there was no way to replace the pulley.

Dry ice is probably your best bet. The canned air can be several different chemicals but the usual choices boil at just below home freezer temperature, difluoroethane boils at -25℃/-13℉, so you're not going to really get much colder using them. (Boiling propane at -42℃ is colder but a huge fire hazard, dry ice is -78℃ and pretty safe). I have -80℃ freezers in the biochemistry lab but you wouldn't want to pay for one!

I had only tried it because a few others suggested it. It was in the freezer overnight before spraying it. Almost wonder if it warmed it some. Lesson learned and I now can make dry ice.

Hi. As you know, liquid nitrogen is the way to go. To get small quantities, befriend a nearby family practice doctor or dermatologist. These offices keep a steady supply of liquid nitrogen for medical purposes. They may be willing to share some every so often.

You will likely find if you just spray the part with liquid CO2 it will cool it enough to do your shrink fit. Trying to make dry ice uses a lot of CO2.

I am sure you are correct, but making the dry ice will be far safer. Even at the cost of CO2, it is still cheaper to make it than for me to drive 2 hours to acquire it.

I'm not a machinist or engineer, but I honestly don't think a couple of seconds of compressed air had any chance of cooling down a part of that size and wall thickness. There probably wasn't enough air in that whole can for what you were trying to do. It sucks that you're so far from everything. I live in Sweden, so I know what that's like. The whole country has barely the population of a good sized city in more populous regions, so the customer base for offering a lot of varied services and options just isn't there. You take what you can get, and pay a premium for it. Just yesterday I was looking for a new battery for my phone at a medium large shopping center here in Stockholm, and there were none to be had, not even at the mobile repair shop. Thank God we at least have the internet.
