I got my silver Topping DX1 and it's really nice with my SHP9600. Great soundstage and detail retrieval. Good thump and extended highs, but not too the point of piercing. Haven't tried my HD559 with it yet, but it should be good!!

excellent review! I know that it's more than twice the price, but how would this compare to the Magni+ & Modi + setup. I'm comparing the DX1 against those. It will be my first purchase of a amp and Dac. Not sure which way to go... Any thoughts? Thanks for the great straightforward - no-nonsense reviews.

You will get improved clarify and maybe soundstage going with the Schiit gear. It will not be a massive difference but I think it twill be a noticeable improvement. You will have to decide for yourself if that’s worth twice the price.

Thanks for the review. Would you consider it as pure dac for the line out only? I'm searching for the basic onboard sound card alternative

I think the DX1 would be an upgrade from most mother board sound cards. It really is a nice DAC for $100.

Since its not a RCA Out, but rather, a Line Out, its fixed at 1vrms. So its not adjustable, its a advertised feature.

Yes, RCA is a fixed output. Headphone out is, of course, adjustable tho.

5:37 I'm particularly sensitive to sibilance and I'm trying to find a DAC/Amp for around $150. Is there any other DAC/Amp you recommend that doesn't sound harsh?
@TheFrugalAudiophile

I havent heard a lot. Often time s sibilance is from your speakers or headphones tho. What are you listing with?

@@TheFrugalAudiophile I own 3 pairs of headphones. Koss Porta Pro, Philips SHP9500, and Panasonic RPHJE120K. None have sibilance on my MSi B450 Tomahawk MAX motherboard, but they have sibilance when connected to my MSI Z690 PRO-A WIFi. I got an Apple DAC dongle but it sounds weak/incomplete, that's why I 'm trying to buy a proper DAC for around $150.

@@WrexBF You may want to consider a DAC with a. tube pre. They are often very warm. Fosi Audio and Aiyima both make them. Of course you can spends upwards of thousands of dollar on a DAC, but I don't really think that's necessary. Also, the Gesheli Labs J2 is supposed to be very neutral and sound excellent, but I have not heard it to confirm.

Should i get this dac for the sennheiser 560s? Im trying to hear more footsteps in games and have good audio...
@TheFrugalAudiophile
@TheFrugalAudiophile Жыл бұрын
It should work. It really depends on how loud you want to play them. It's not the most powerful amp, but should power the 560's to a decent volume.

@@TheFrugalAudiophile my headphones are loud enough. i thought amps improved the sound quality and would make me hear footsteps better
@TheFrugalAudiophile
@TheFrugalAudiophile Жыл бұрын
@@FairSkys I'm not sure if DX1 one or any relatively inexpensive headphone would do that. Really, footstep clarity is dependent more on the headphones as apposed to the amp. You would want something with a brighter sound profile to emphasize mid and higher frequencies.

can this drive the he400se and hd600?

It should, at what volume would be the question. I don't think it would drive them to their full potential, but it will work.

what dac/amp do you reccomend for harsh bright headphones?
@TheFrugalAudiophile
@TheFrugalAudiophile Жыл бұрын
I think a lot of DACs in the $300 and under price range sound pretty similar. I have heard that the Gesheli Labs J2 sounds very smooth so that might help you. I have not heard that DAC so I can't say for certain tho. What might actually work better for you is EQ. You could bring down frequencies in the 5-10k range. That is where most people experience harshness. You could also try a tub DAC or amp. Tubes are known to have a warmer sound with slightly recessed highs. That too could mitigate some of the harshness. A final option is to try a different pair of headphones. You could possibly sell the ones you have and get something else. I'm not really into headphones so I wouldn't know to suggest. There are other channels on KZbin that do cover them.
