@@MARKIEBANUNCE Neil never played guitar at the level that Randy did.....he may have dreamed about it, but Neil's idea of a tough guitar solo was holding one note way up the neck and just bending that one note.....lol. He got away with murder as a musician.....his fans were mesmerized by him, but he was doing anything of consequence ever on the guitar. Sound effects, a little distortion, feedback, and there you have a Neil Young guitar song.....once or twice he used open tuning but that was about it.

Wow, I cant believe after all these years that i could actually see this song performed live on video. It's like a dream come true. I was a big BTO fan in my younger days and I always liked this song but I never truly listened to the meaning of the lyrics and had to find out the hard way what Randy was saying in the song.
@Bobjb999
@Bobjb999 4 жыл бұрын
They're not performing it live. Randy's lip-synching to the studio recording. They're pretending to play the music we're hearing. It's a promotional video for the single, not a video-taped live recording of the song.
@MrPendell
@MrPendell 3 жыл бұрын
@@Bobjb999 you’re right that this not actually a live performance, but Randy’s faithful mime of the volume modulated guitar part is a fantastic aid to trying to learn the licks. Some of what brother Tim can be seen playing later in the video looks pretty credible, and I’m sure he probably played something like that in live performances of the song, but I’m also pretty sure it was Randy playing all those Lenny Breau inspired chords on the other guitar track on the original recording. I was only lucky enough to see Randy and Fred live once, in a a later incarnation of the band which was playing summer fair venues in the early 00s, if memory serves- Fred kicked ass and took names vocally, while playing a mean bass, and Randy has always been a genius musician with amazing guitar chops and an encyclopedic musical knowledge. I think his voice was stronger in his youth than when I saw them, but it was always such that the vocal track on the original recording probably took a couple of takes and some tweaking. I also agree with Greg M that the lyrical message is great, but if you assume that “looking out for number one” just means selfishly keeping your own best interests in mind, you’re missing the point- these lyrics, like Randy’s life, are about dedication, work ethic, and integrity.

A decade later ... This song was a highlight of the show when The [real] Guess Who reunited some years ago, and there's at least one very nice performance of it to be found here on YT. It's the "Road Food" lineup with Randy in place of Kurt -- how odd to say that -- and Donnie gets to show that he wasn't just some hired hand.
@jemogan
@jemogan Жыл бұрын
Brother Tim? Not on your life. Tim Bachman had been out of the band for some time when this song was first recorded. Who you're seeing and hearing is Blair Thornton, who is the FAR better guitar player and was instrumental in their success. Randy has talked about how much he thinks of Blair's playing many times. @@MrPendell
