Scott Walker, one of the most innovative and enduring songwriters of the 20th century, has died today, March 25, 2019, aged 76.
Walker was born Noel Scott Engel in Hamilton, Ohio on 9 January 1943, and grew up in California. In 1964, he teamed up with John Maus - who was naming himself John Walker - and became the duo the Walker Brothers. Their drummer Gary Leeds was a veteran from the “swinging London” pop music scene and persuaded them to relocate to London, where Walker has been based ever since.
Walker first came to fame in the mid-1960s in the group the Walker Brothers, before creating a string of acclaimed solo albums - Scott, Scott 2, Scott 3 and Scott 4 - that are regarded as some of the most adventurous and boundary-pushing pop albums of the era.
He then moved further out to the periphery of the music scene, with an increasingly experimental run of albums, including 1995’s Tilt and 2006’s The Drift, which reflected on Mussolini’s mistress, the Srebrenica massacre, and 9/11.
The Walker Brothers had several hits in the Netherlands.
This song ‘No Regrets’ written by Tom Rush, was a hit for the Walker Brothers worldwide.
It reached # 7 in the UK charts, #7 in the Dutch Top 40 and #5 in Belgium
This Toppop recording was made and broadcast on 27 February 1976.

That comment has given me the best laugh I’ve had in I don’t know how long!.. He would be the first to admit that his voice is … ‘limited’. He played in my local sports hall - I jest not about 15 years ago and the overall consensus was - “ If he ever did have a ‘voice’ … well, he hasn’t now.” FFS .

As with certain iconic songs - so many seem unable to read the songwriters name under the title?.. Not a ‘Scott Walker’ composition - but a remarkable version of . It has a very special place in my memory all to do with a super-special first date which involved playing a ‘Love Songs’ compilation-album several times … Ah , to be young and not yet ‘ An idealist mugged by reality ‘ to quote my favourite writer’s partial description of his reader’s . Just ‘how’ did he know?..

John Hayward : That's a really nice way of describing him. Ah, the memory of Scott Walker, an exceptionally handsome guy with the most beautiful voice I had ever heard in the pop world. I remember the day I first heard him sing. It was on Juke Box Jury when I was young. The jury were bowled over by his voice as I was too. As a music critic once said. He had everything. He could have been the next Sinatra but he walked away. Why Scott, why. Heartbreaking. ❤

Incase anyone is confused as to why im taking about loss. But no regrets is a song i used to sing along to a lot when it came on the radio during my youth, i had a similar voice to scott walker. No were near as good as his, but i held my own when it came to singing. So many very talented singers around in those days.

Lexo30. Yes, on the actual record it was common for superb session musicians to be used.. Alan Parker, Page, etc. But John Haus (Walker) was an accomplished guitarist who was well able to play it live, taught a couple of the Beach Boys to play guitar, and Jeff Beck bought one of his guitars. Interesting interview on KZbin by John Walker mentioning that and also playing blues guitar. Go to mrrocktv John Walker interview. But yes, respect for the accuracy of your comment.

I cant believe someone so young had such a rare naturally, smooth voice. Beautiful. Dont know what happened to him. He quit, became unseen and passed at too early of cancer. What a shame. John had great voice also. They were amazing duo similar to Righteous brothers. Great duos. Great music. Both Split and went solo also. Breaks my heart in both duos. 🎶🎤🎶

The only thing with the Walker Brothers, there was three of them.the drummer Gary Leeds was a member of the group as well
@nancywood9531
@nancywood9531 3 жыл бұрын
@@lindaflatman6976 yes Gary's father put up the money for them to record and also to go to England to live/ record. With stipulation Gary stay with them. None were brothers. John actually started the group. He toured singing until he also died of cancer...but years before Scott. Group sort of fell apart when Scott fell apart and quit singing , went into a ministry to " Find himself"..... then his songs were beautiful but weird...very weird. Should make a movie about them.

great song written by Tom Rush and released by him in 1968 , but Scott really puts his own stamp on it doesn't he ! As Derek says , one of the most iconic voices in music ! The music that he really enjoyed playing was very different to this , but he just sings this to perfection in my opinion ! R.I.P. Scott , and good wishes to all who come here , Dave
