Great video. As a 59 year old guy. I had the opportunity to open up about 3 boxes of series 1. I kept them in pretty good shape. I have a complete blue set 1-66 in an 8 or better graded from all the cards I collected. I just put another set in a binder from 1-330 and all the stickers. Much more enjoyment in a binder. There is a book out on series 1. A lot of good info. Quick tidbit. Topps was the second choice to get the rights.

Amazing! Unfortunately, we can only dream of opening a box, let alone three! That is very cool. Hope to one day have a binder set of all 330 also!

I still have all of my cards/stickers from 1977. All are in great condition. Just a note: We only used Baseball or Football cards for our bikes.... NEVER Star Wars cards.

That's awesome. Nothing much cooler to me than cards someone's held on to for a long time. I wish I had more of what I collected growing up- I didn't use much discretion in what I stuck in my spokes unfortunately.

@@TheCargoBayPod There's a part of me that wants to have my cards graded..... but that's a LOT of cards. I have like eight or nine 2" or 3" ringed binders full of them, from many franchises from back then. Star Wars, Empire, Jedi, Planet of the Apes (the TV show), Battlestar Galactica (1978), The Gong Show, Elvis, Wacky Packages, you name it. While Star Wars, Battlestar Galactica and Planet of the Apes are the only ones I have full sets of, I still have lots of those old cards, and in pretty decent condition. Also, my original SW Series 1 stickers aren't fouled by the "gum coating", because they were still new when I got them. That gum could cut your mouth open, but we were Gen-Xers, so mouth pain to chew gum was no big thing to us. LMAO! Also, did you guys notice the "C-3PO with a boner" card? It was in the Green series, card # 207. The story behind it is that a "rogue" artist airbrushed it on there, and so many of them got into "the wild" that there was no way to recall them all. I happen to have 3 of them (at least).... and never actually saw the "correct" version.

@@IggyStardust1967 Those Battlestar cards look great! Hadn't seen those. I do enjoy graded slabs, but it's such a massive hassle and so expensive that I haven't submitted many cards from my personal collection. We've got a playlist of our "set guides," and we've made it through all of the main Original Trilogy releases. Definitely had fun with that "error" card. It's worth a pretty penny in good shape! I tried a piece of 30+ year old gum on an early episode- I think from "The Black Hole" cards. It had turned from sharp to brittle, and immediately turned to a disgusting fine powder 😆

@@TheCargoBayPod I have to be honest, "Planet of the Apes" was my first exposure to Sci-Fi realms in the very early 1970s (I was born in 1967). Needless to say, I own all 5 movies on DVD (along with the "Behind the Planet of the Apes" documentary), the complete TV series (live action)... and DID watch the cartoon when it aired, but didn't like it as much as the live action stuff. The Six Million Dollar Man/Bionic Woman was the next one I got into, and then Star Wars hit. After Star Wars, there was Battlestar Galactica, Buck Rogers, The Black Hole, Battle Beyond the Stars, and a whole host of others. I still have many toys from that era (late 60s through the 80s), but not all of them. Many I sold off, and honestly wish I hadn't. But I also had to move from a large "farm house" into a "row home" in 2014, so a lot was left behind anyway. But those cards.... They didn't take up much room (compared to the toys).... so I still have those. I also still have the books I read back then, as I was learning to read. Not to get too deep into it all, but I had a traumatic childhood, so reading was my "escapism". I was also able to comprehend what I was reading, which surprised many of my teachers in school. I was very advanced in my reading levels. But it all started with Science Fiction. I'm going to check out your other videos. But about that gum...... even back then when it was new... it was still "kinda crunchy".... so I wouldn't have attempted chewing it 30 years on.

Still remember as a 5-year-old opening these packs after a quick family trip to 7-11 convenience store in 1977. Epic memories! My bedroom door was completely decorated with those Set 1-5 stickers!

Great idea for a series, guys. And you are right, no one had home video in 1977, so cards and Starlog magazine were big. Luckily you could get a movie ticket, popcorn and soda for 5 bucks, and hit movies would be in theaters for months. Awesome video. Now I'm going to go dig up my old early series cards.

Congrats! I have 10 of these, all ungraded and one looks centered and very clean. 10 of ~1150 cards with zero corner damage. Not eager to send any off to PSA due to current horror stories. Interested to hear your experience with Beckett and any tips you might have for getting through the process.

This episode was awesome! The 'E-Dubs ripping stuff' videos are pretty great, I still need to watch more of his stuff. I'm not super familiar with vintage, but after watching his openings, I had to buy a 1977 Han Solo PSA 8 for $80.

The stickers also suffer from lots of manufacturing defects(tread marks and creaselines, mostly) that effect about 50% of the population... those defects means PSA might give you as high as a '6' for a grade, so the stickers are really tough to find in high grade.
@TheCargoBayPod
@TheCargoBayPod Жыл бұрын
That's a shame. The stickers don't seem to get much cooler than the ones from series one!

I collected 1-66 psa slabs over the last year or so, amd continue to acquire more in this down market. You can finnd some pretty sweet deals on PSA 8s right now. Or grade yourself for even better potential savings.

I'm thinking a card like that has no ceiling. Proof cards aren't usually graded 8 or above. This was a Beckett 8.5. Has the certificate of authenticity. What are your thoughts about the value and what it could go for?
@TheCargoBayPod
@TheCargoBayPod 7 ай бұрын
We're definitely not experts on the higher-end stuff, especially for something a little more niche like a proof. I guess it only depends on how many people are chasing it, and how much money those folks are willing to throw at it.
