You took it to a whole new level. Thanks for posting weights, + Number of chops. To me, weight makes a big difference when carrying in the field. What a range of comparisons!! Nice to see another of your videos, again, I learned a lot. Great Video, thanks for putting the time into posting.

The whole time I was watching this all I could think was "never leave home without a $30 axe and a $20 saw". I have an ESEE Junglas that would've been nice to see in this comparo, but I got it for clearing brush more than anything and making kindling. It's going to be my hunting partner this season. But good lored, I could never see myself relying on a big knife to chop wood. Great job on putting in all that work to show what these choppers could do. Impressive. It's definitely a very convincing video of why we should use the right tools for the jobs. Thanks!
@Thepreppersbunkeroutdoors
@Thepreppersbunkeroutdoors 8 жыл бұрын
I wish that I had a Junglas to compare with! I really should have one. In my opinion, actual wood chopping starts at the Jessica X. The Super Khuk will out chop one handed hatchets and tomahawks, while still being an effective knife. but you are right, if you need to do wood chopping, and you don't necessarily have the proper knife, a good axe is a must, or you will KILL calories.
@YankeeWoodcraft

Say Heah Jacob. Even though I think I have some good choppers. I went lite. Originally I teamed my Fix Parang Bushcraft Jungle Knife with my Cold Steel 3V Master Hunter. But when I found out that the Fox Jungle Oarang came in all black, I bought a Mira Kansbol to team with my O.D. Green Bushcrraft Oarang also in the O.D. Green for a lovely piece of kit. Well today Santa brought me my Mora Garberg that I could team with either my Bokor 2011 Collection Knife or my Bokor Aparro. I'm leaning more towards the Aoarro. Yeah, It was nice, Take care.,,.p

Very thorough as always Jacob; thanks for doing this kind of comprehensive, relatively objective testing. If at some point you decide to do another shootout, there are a couple other blades that you might find worth testing. 1) The Condor Dundee Bowie, which is about as heavy as the Jessica X, but somewhat resembles your Gunslinger. It's made of Condor's standard 1075 steel and is $54 on Amazon at the time of this posting. 2) The Aranyik Packanep, which is a smaller version of their traditional Thai enep - 5160 steel, hand-forged, a little over one pound, and only $25 on their website. In all fairness, it comes with no sheath.

LOL!!! "I don't know what I'll ever find what it's actually good at..." NOW that was funny haha! Good test man! Given the profiles I am not surprised the DCF won. I am surprised the Jess-X won over the SXB though. I've never used a SXB so that is just an assumption based on conjecture. I want to see how those stack up to the AKC Denali. I know it puts Jess-X in it's place and quite easily but that Gunslinger just might take it. Both one excellent and also one very enjoyable video. BTW that new table looks to be bomb proof lol

I'll back the Bushcraft Kukuri eval. I was real excited when I purchased it; and it was in fact my first "big outdoors knife". I researched it extensively and watched a lot of performance videos before pulling the trigger. I was so sure it was going to be a winner, I even purchased a custom kydex sheath for it before I received it. I was certain it was going to be that one chunk of metal that I would take with me on all my adventures until I was too old to have them and would then gift it as a heirloom tool. At the end of the day though, it just didn't perform as well as I thought it should and I'm still kind of mystified as to why. Maybe it was the grind they used, the steel they choose, or the out of the box sharpness, but at the end of the day, it didn't have the ability to chop like a hatchet in the same way that other kukri's always seem to do. I still have it and use it it, but it wasn't worth what I paid for it, I keep thinking a baby kukri was a great idea, it just needs the right metal, handle, and blade geometry to knock it out of the park. I'm thinking of taking that redesign to a custom knife maker. Any insights you have where the Kukuri Bushcraft went wrong would be most appreciated.

@Thepreppersbunkeroutdoors

the gunslinger is 1/4" thick, but sadly at this point I dint think that either the gunslinger or the Super Khuk will be carried by Dry Creek Forge any more. Something may change, but I'm hoping to find the best way to get these blades produced, and I dint think anyone would do as good a job as Dry Creek Forge.

I don't have the Tops Kukri but one thing I noticed here and in a few other videos is that people use it wrong. If you play the video here in 0.25x speed you see that you hit the wood mostly with the belly or even a bit further at the front towards the tip, while the ideal spot for chopping with any kukri (and this should still be true here despite the smaller size and bigger belly) is a bit behind the belly (towards the handle). If you see the whole form of the blade as an S it would be right in the middle where the letter is flat, if the engraving is the same on all of them it should be roughly below the 7. Another thing to notice is the angle of your wrist which seems to be the same as with a knife instead of accounting for the angle of the blade itself and a very stiff wrist as well as the grip on the handle being pretty far at the front instead of making use of the end of the handle to get a better swing while also making use of their higher weight (should also still be true despite its smaller size). I really can't tell if there are some small design flaws in the Tops Kukri or if it is because of its smaller size (which might be better compared to other knives) but especially in videos where the Tops one doesn't perform so well people seem to be using it not quite correctly, which is also not surprising because they do need some adjustments and training if you're not used to them in the first place. That said I do think smaller Kukris have a deserved place, the blade form got some good benefits especially for a one tool option (that you might wear all the time unlike ~3 tools) and it is way less bulky and weights a lot less than the regular kukris which are surprisingly bulky. That said, I think it is overpriced. You can get proper sized kukris for like half the price if not less.

Dark Thoughts #1- the beauty of the khukuri is that no training is needed for it to be used effectively- as per gurkha themselves. (Fighting is another matter) #2- the body knows where the sweet spot is, and it CERTAINLY is not behind the belly of this knife #3- snap cuts and an extended grip MIGHT be possible if the handle didnt suck so bad. #4- you take a short heavy brick with a thick edge, and it itnt going to perform on par with other knives. It might have other purposes, but comparable performance aint one of them.

Your most applicable data (easiest empirical) is the mass and speed to get energy... BK9 crackin' 100 mph at 16 oz transfers 1/2 kinetic energy to target as JX doing same velocity. This is not taking into account geometry, sharpness, leverage, accuracy of hits, speed consistency, muscle power, material differences, and subject's stability, etc. Looking at it this way... the BK9 wins the race on efficiency, the SXB wins it on brute power but not accuracy or efficiency, and jx takes it on price. The kuk is out of it on all sorts of issues. I've not used Your knife, however I'd wager it is actually 'all things considered' in the top 4 hunt, yet not a definitive winner --- again all things considered.
