Great explanation, it must take quite a while to succesfully tack a boat like this when all the sails are flying.

Thank you. I've been wondering how they do that.

Why not a square fore top sail? Powerful on every point up into close reaching. But flys ahead of the top mast. With a sheet and brace on each side, to tack just swap the lead, lines being walked fore and aft easily along the side decks. Keep the flying jib for reaching and beating.

In practice, it does not seem to make any difference to the speed of the boat which side it is on, based on my experience with a modified Mirror dinghy.

I wonder how long it took to make all these fine diagrams?!

Now I know why everybody uses Bermudian sails from schooners to ketches to sloops. One needs to pay for a crew for all that.

Say Z bip, It sure sounds complicated, I am facing a same similar problem. Seeing as to I am new to this radio control sail boat business. (I just love the looks of the topsail schooners.) I am in the process of scratch building a model of the Bluenose. However I did not know it would be so complicated to run a rig like that. I have seen several on the Tube but can not make out the lines they have controlling the sails. One is of a fishing schooner, the builder is out of New Jersey. The other is of several topsail schooners sailing in a place called Mason park. Which I believe is in Buena Park, or Irvine, CA. One of these days I am going to take a ride up to Mason park and see if I can run across one of those guys sailing the schooners and look at their boats and see if i can make heads or tails of it. Cheers, and good luck, You have a nice looking vessel. CJG

Hi Carlos. The simplest by far is to just leave the topsails fixed in place. That works fine. I'm just curious to see if they can be tacked on an R/C model.
