The first models came from the factory with a pre-set ride program that was actually pretty tame. The ride cycly concluded with one (1) flip! Soon the showmen found a way to overrun the factory setting and began operating the ride "by hand", which resulted in wild flipping orgies. When Huss heard this, they were pretty shocked and they revoked their warranties for the ride. They claimed that the braking system was not build for this extreme use and they refused to take any responsibility for any malfunctions. But soon, as competition caused every showman to work the ride manually, Huss felt pressured to actually re-design and upgrade the brakes to handle the extreme manouvres. Most park versions run on pre-programmed ride cycles, though.

This seems to be a dying breed of flat rides. King's Dominion is removing their top spin, The Crypt which was originally installed in 2005.

I worked on the motion control program for the giant top spin shortly before it was finished and shipped to the USA. Huss have a site in Budapest and that's where I worked on it the snow ! It was driven by 4 huge servo motors, 2 in each tower that were controlled by a PLC that also controlled the brakes on the gondola and water jets as part of the motion program.

Talocan at Phantasialand is one of my favorite flat rides, I also enjoyed Riptide, when I was at Knott's in 2008 (RIP most intense Top Spin ever). They also flap around on fun fairs here in Germany. Plus its like the best flat ride in Parkitect. ^^

There was a Huss Top Spin at Alton Towers called Ripsaw. It was removed in 2015 as it reached the end of it's service life. Fabbri and Northern Amusements made versions of the top spin as well.

The most fun ride on anything that I ever had was on the Huss Top Spin at Movie Park Germany. It has a reputation for not being very reliable and I got on the first ride after a breakdown. Gondola was loaded to capacity and most of the people on it cheered and applauded everything the ride managed to do without going into another E-Stop. It was pure fun, the Operator enjoyed it too, he gave us 2 Ride cycles back-to-back with the 2nd one most likely being in either a manual mode or at least being a more intense ride program, because the 2nd one had us Flip like crazy.

Knotts Berry Farm had one of these. I was always a lot of fun but it had so much down time. It was finally removed a few years ago because parts were hard to find and it was expensive to maintain. At least that’s what management told us on the ride closing weekend.

Fortunately, we have one HUSS Top Spin here in Brazil. Is the Ekatomb Annunaki in the Hopi Hari amusement park, located in Vinhedo, São Paulo. Is the only one HUSS Top Spin operating in Brazil, and I think that the nearest Top Spin is at Fantasilandia in Chile.

I can't help but think the reason so many top spins were to be 'put down' is because of technical issues with rust, surely Huss didn't recommend theme park people having that water pump feature spray on the ride.

I actually clicked on this video because it made me think about CGA's FireFall and I thought you might talk about the problems with the ride to see if it matched up with my memories. Don't get me wrong, I loved that ride and thought it was so cool when it first came to the park, but it had a few problems and why, I assume, they ultimately got rid of it. So the biggest problem of all, and probably why the ride never had too long of a line ever, was that you were not allowed to bring anything that couldn't fit into the pockets on to the ride, and these pockets were ridiculously small and didn't extend outward very much at all. You could fit a phone and maybe a pair of flip flops if your feet weren't too big (which you also couldn't wear while on the ride so they wouldn't fall off into the water that was lit on fire below) into those pockets but definitely not any sort of bag or even a fanny pack/bum bag. And the park had recently gotten rid of all of their free bag storage for the rides because they were getting too many complaints of people's stuff getting stolen. I feel like that was one of the first things that really changed the excitement of CGA to a lot of people who were now angry that they either had to pay to keep their bags in one spot all the way at the front of the park, away from any rides, or in the waterpark, or have one person in their group always sitting out to watch the bags. But I digress. So unless you had an employee who was really kind and/or didn't care enough, they weren't even allowed to watch stuff for people or let them leave their stuff to possibly be stolen on the exit side. If you somehow snuck your stuff past the entrance employee who would try to warn people before they got on the ride, you would be escorted off for having something that didn't fit. And this ride would take forever to load, so they wanted to cut down that time as much as possible by avoiding having people put up a fight before they even got into line or by trying to put their stuff on the other side and walk back past everyone to get to their seat, which might have been filled because people weren't paying attention and now everyone has to move over or possibly get kicked off back into line. Long story short, not being able to go on with basically anything was a problem. And stuff always fell out of pockets. The other major problem seemed to be that the ride couldn't handle its own power. One time I was bored waiting in line so I decided to chat with the ride operators. And this has been 10+ years since I heard this information, so don't quote me on the numbers and excuse me for having such a wide range. Anyways, the ride would constantly break down and the ride itself was inconsistent. Some cycles would feel more intense than others. So I decided to ask them about that. The employee told me that the ride actually had something like 8? 12? 20? levels that they could choose to run it at, but the ride couldn't handle above a level 3? 4? 8? without breaking down (I remember it was less than half of whatever it was they could run it at), and even running it at that higher number (3? 4? 8?) would put a strain on the ride, so it depended on who was working it and what they felt like the riders wanted for which level they chose to run it at and that's why the rides felt inconsistent. The ride had a lot of mechanical errors and for some of the last years that it was in the park, they would just leave it closed down for the day (sometimes for weeks) instead of either trying to get it running or to have so many employees working a ride that never had too long of a line when they were short staffed and needed the help at other, more popular rides. It was sad to see it go, but the ride never got a fair chance to become popular due to all the rule around it and it constantly being broken.

The stand up verson you called a "knock off" in Spain is manufactured by Bakker Denies and the model is called skylab and another was called Thunderbird from research I learnt from kermis historie. The skylab and thunderbird rides were actually predesseors of the Huss and Schwerzcoff enterprise rides. I know and have been on one which operated at Peter Pan's Playground / Adventure Island in Southend-on-Sea in 1990s after the ride was moved to Funland in Hayling Island. Furthermore, Adventure Island in Southend-on-Sea have in recent years designed their own in-house enterprise called Time Machine which is still operating.

I remember The Top Spin they had at Bakken amusement park here in Denmark. It had so many problems and was often not in operation. The last ride i ever had on it we got stuck upside down, never went on it after that, it was gone the year after.

If you think about it, those water fountains, especially when they hit the riders are pretty gross. It's not that they are hooked up to a fresh water line, it's just a pump that is running and feeding it from the reservoir the water goes back into. Now consider that people, while hanging in there, spit into the water, some even throw up, the water dripping off their faces washes off whatever is there - and the next one gets it sprayed right in their face. It LOOKS nice, but it is so disgusting.

There was one called Twister at Darien Lake built in 2000 but it was closed in 2018 and replaced with a Sky Screamer. I never rode it because 🤮, but the guests on Roller Coaster Tycoon seem to like it.

@@CoasterCollege Yeah :-) Whenever I'm in that part of the country I always stop there. They also have Cannibal, which is one hell of a coaster. They also have a Mack Himalaya (sadly, they only run it forwards), a Schwarzkopf Jet Stat and a separate Schwarzkopf portable coaster (plus several other rides and coasters, including some historic landmark ones).

I've rode the giant version. The Crypt at KI. I rode it in 2008 with its 9 inversion cycle. Most intense ride I've ever rode and the only ride to truly scare me. And the only ride to ever make me sick.

We Had 3 tavelling Top Spin 1 Models Here in Germany, there is Bausch and Zehle and the Revolution from Kinzler, you can See it every Year at Stuttgart Cannstatter Wasen. And the Top Spin 2 from Scheele was very Famous Here, because he Drive the Most Intense Rides you ever experienced on a Top Spin. He Made 20-30 loops only at the Last round, and that at every Ride and mit only for one time. And i find the Serengeti Park Top Spin isnt in a Bad condition. It Looks good with the Paintings, it's themed to the Park. But Talk Mode about Talocan, i find it's so great with the Fire, Water, IMAscore Soundtrack, the Ride Programm, the Theming, it's Just the Perfect Top Spin.

Our park Kennywood in Pgh, PA had one. It was in the news a few yrs ago cause it did it’s flip and stuck upside down at the top. Took workers some time to get them down, they said it was a type of brake that stuck. Not sure if they still have it or not.

My first experience of this type of ride was a "Space Roller" at Seaside Heights NJ; that version (I forget which manufacturer, but I'm certain it wasn't Huss) had back-to-back rows of seats that faced in opposite directions. (The Six Flags Great Adventure version is still around, but seeing ads for Twix plastered all over it is a bit depressing.) I still prefer Enterprise, and was saddened when Coney Island replaced theirs with a Top Spin.

My home park, sadly, recently put Top Spin 1, into SBNO mode, it was one of the original Top Spins, whch was built in 1991 :( It was in bad shape, it broke always, even, when riders was on it, so... I hope my home park will refurbish it, or replace ://
