I'm so glad I found this video (and your channel). This is a topic I've never really thought that much about. I've ALWAYS had severe problems being out of breath playing tennis, and I think I've finally realized it's my nerves and a having a poor breathing rhythm. I will definitely be more mindful of my breathing the next time I play and hopefully last longer on the court. Thanks!

Great video :) I think this is a really good, but often overlooked tip. I complained to one of my coaches that I don't seem to relax whilst playing. We carried on hitting and after a while he said 'You don't breathe much do you?". It's funny how you don't really notice it until someone mentions it. I've also had a recurring golfers elbow problem and I'm positive it's down to the fact I don't breathe or relax whilst playing and my whole body is stiff when I hit the ball. I started some breathing exercises whilst playing and it certainly helped. I had more energy, hit my shots harder and for a period of time my elbow issue went away. What I find hardest is maintaining it, particularly during matches where I naturally feel more tense and tighten up. When tennis is allowed back at the end of this month, I am 100% going to practice it every time until it becomes natural :) Thank you for the vid!

It’s a daily battle with the breathing, once you’ve worked on it extensively, it becomes easier to zone in and time it correctly but it’s something you have to remember on a daily basis. But it’s well worth it All the best Simon

Thank you! My husband and I play in Tucson, AZ (where it gets real hot!) and I have been meaning to look up information on proper breathing in tennis since we moved here as I have caught myself holding my breath recently. Then I realized that I never really had instruction on how to breathe properly and even had lessons in years past! I am in my 50's and my love for the sport has not wavered even though pickleball players are always trying to convert us. I just can't do it! I look forward to watching more videos.

7:27 What do you recommend? An exhale on the toss, a quick inhale, and then exhale when striking the ball or inhaling on the toss and then a long exhale from the drop until striking the ball? Thanks for all of this amazing instruction Coach Simon!
@TopTennisTrainingOfficial
@TopTennisTrainingOfficial Жыл бұрын
Many thanks for the support. I recommend trying to inhale as you start the motion up until the power position, then start the exhale as you explode up from that position. This allows you to be relaxed at contact and is an easy tempo to recreate over and over again. All the best Simon

@@TopTennisTrainingOfficial I play badminton, but this seem to be the problem I have, as the girl you mentioned, my physical conditions is very good I do walk a lot everyday not taking car or bus, Also I do shadow training for badminton but I always am out of breathe and the same problem happens in tournament every time I meet an opponent with whom I play very long rallies, It looks to me as If am holding my breathing for an entire rally every time, It does look like I do it unconsciously. In my very last tournament yesterday I noticed something very interesting, my first opponent was making a lots of mistake, during the game and rallies were very short, somehow it was reason I was able to not be out of breathe for 3 sets, the second opponent, we played very long rallies and after half a set I was already dead, Like out of breathe, It does not look like a physical problem but holding breathe as you mention here.. My second opponent looked okay compared to me and although he ended up winning the match, he did not dominate the game...

Excellent video. The triathlon example hits so close to home. I get tense and will get to holding my breath during a match. What good is being in shape, if I waste it by holding my breath. I am putting this video lessons at the very focus of my tennis going forward.

This truly is an outstanding video. Something you hear few coaches talk about. From doing this you also get more effortless power and spin as your grip is loose giving you much more racquet head speed. Doing this also helps keep your head still during contact at least from my own personal experience. I think this may be the reason why Federer is actually looking behind his racquet at contact but that’s just conjecture. Only thing I disagree with is Novak Djokovic exhaling during contact. From watching him he seems quite tense at contact. Also if you look at pictures of him you can see how tense his face is at contact. The only player I’ve seen do this correctly is Federer. Even dimitrov who I thought did this correctly is pretty tense at contact.
@TopTennisTrainingOfficial
@TopTennisTrainingOfficial 7 жыл бұрын
Thanks for watching and leaving the nice comment. RE - Djokovic: I know for sure that he uses the double inhale, exhale during training (or at least he did during his best seasons) as I was on court right next to him in Monaco and in London. I could hear to inhale/exhale ratio and it was a very conscious action that he was focusing on. The last season maybe he lost some of his ways including the breathing technique.

Top Tennis Training - Learn Tennis Online No problem man thanks for the great video. I agree I can hear Djokovic doing it between points but when he’s actually making contact I don’t think he’s relaxed or exhaled as he looks quite tense. Just google his forehand and backhand and you can see how tense his face is at contact. Even during his best years he always looked very tense during contact. I didn’t really pay attention to his breathing between points but yeah that’s crucial as well. Are there any other players besides Federer that exhale during contact? I couldn’t find any. This is also probably the reason why Federer has more spin than a Djokovic or Murray despite using an eastern grip.

Grunting works for some, it’s better than not breathing at all (which some club players do) but not ideal. Exhaling prior to and during the strike zone allows you relaxation and true looseness. All the best Simon

My best tennis happens when I hardly think about breathing or moving at all. It all becomes so easy, effortless, it's like, there must be something wrong for it to be this easy, why is this even a sport, why bother? That's only 1% of the time :-) The other 99% of the time I struggle too much.

Paul Czerner It’s one of the toughest things to do in sports. To be intense and relaxed at the same time. It’s like you have to try not to try. This is something you have to really work at because it completes goes against your body instincts.

Great job Simon As always 👍❗ A very important aspect of the game by the way, which usually passes unseen. In this particular one (as well as in many others. ...), I think that the game and technique of Andre Agassi especially exceeded. It' s just enough to watch pictures of him hitting different strokes, and you'll always see his cheeks inflated of the air which is about to exhalle, as you say in the video.

Why nose breathing? Capacity of inhaling is quite minor than trough the mouth for obvious reasons. Mouth is much bigger and cuantity of air that can be inhaled is bigger. More air better. Also there is s less energy required to release the action.
