I have always argued that based on the difficulty of textile work and weaving it must have taken tens, if not hundreds of thousands of years to develop the skills necessary to create rope to form a basket, or cloth for clothing. It generally is ignored that these would be the earliest examples of “human” technology and invention. Also the earliest use of cloth was likely to filter water where clear running water is not available. That’s my fun fact.

Very interesting. I'd like to make two comments. #1 It's really amazing how many of these discoveries come about because a farmer or other land owner was digging for another purpose. It almost makes you think that you could start digging anywhere and, given enough time and effort, find something. 10,000 years IS a long time. #2 When scientists begin speculating about the activities or reasons for their findings it often reminds me of an early scene from Disney's "The Little Mermaid" in which the mermaid, Ariel, is exploring a sunken ship and friend the seagull (don't remember his name) explains that a fork is used by humans to comb the hair. In truth scientist are only guessing at most of the activities from ancient times and they often strike me as amazingly limited. I can think of several reasons the bones of those women, for instance, had been riding horses and using arrows, none of which include war. They may have been hunting for one thing. It could have been there were entirely different reasons for the similar marks in their bones. They were only marks in bones. Also, the "princess." They assume the woman was a princess because of the style of burial and the jewelry found with her. But for all we know it may have been a common thing for women to have this type of jewelry at the time. And the children (and llamas) who were "sacrificed." They appear healthy only because there was no damage to their bones. Perhaps there was a plague -- one that did not affect the bones -- that took them. While they are all buried in the same area and at roughly the same time, remember that time may have been anywhere from 25 to 100 years depending on degree erosion. Also, removing the heart is often attributed to human sacrifice but that may have been a common practice as another means to ensure the person was dead. My point is, so much is supposition and presumption based on how we live now, plus the pressure of having to come up with explanations. Then they have to stand by their claims and it becomes political. I almost wish we could wait to learn more before asking for conclusions.

String is exciting if you consider that we didn't think the tech to MAKE string existed 50,000 years ago! I always see Neanderthals shown as wearing rough tanned hides pieced together with sinew. I remember being taught that humans didn't start making fabric until much much later. It's interesting to know that the idea of gathering fibers - plant fibers or animal hairs - and twisting or spinning them into usable string is WAY older than we thought!

How can people think that beating a child is right? How can people think that a religion that makes half of their children into little more than chattels is right? Not to mention those who refuse childhood vaccinations, psychological support and education If during an emergency, people believed they could save everyone by sacrificing a few, they will have had their reasons. We don't know what they were, but it's not going to be random cruelty at those numbers. Humans specialise in finding patterns and it leads to some rediculous superstitions Perhaps their world view held that blood or lives maintained the world in balance, or that a cruel being would destroy everyone unless they were appeased

In the US there are laws around disturbing Native American burial sites, artifacts and remains discovered are supposed to be returned to tribes affiliated with the culture. I think that’s probably why we don’t hear about burials in North America as much.

But imma be honest with you...you’re less likely to hear about it bc the us doesn’t like to pay for archaeology and most of it never gets dug. We seriously lag behind in science funding, especially for sciences like archaeology. I’m speaking from personal experience here - I’m currently working on a site that is a settlement that’s several acres large. We have only excavated a tiny fraction of it bc we’re all volunteers and we have no money (I am an actual archaeologist, but I volunteer for stuff like this for fun.). Basically in the us if you can’t make tons of money off of it or if digging it up doesn’t violate NAGPRA (ie, construction.), it doesn’t get done and there’s no funding.

@annie minding my business it depends on what country you’re in. Here in the us, if you find remains on your property you should call the cops. They’ll contact a professional to tell if the remains are historic or recent. Recent, the cops investigate. Historic, and they pass the info on to the state archaeologist. Legally, if you find something like this on private property you can keep it and not tell anyone. Morally, you very much should not. At a minimum, you should let the state arch send people out to excavate it (please don’t do this yourself...if you like science at all I’m begging you please just leave it tf alone and let us handle it. All of the interesting info - The Who, the when, etc. - is destroyed when lay people start digging up sites. If you, for example, touch charcoal then we can’t send it for c14 bc it’s been contaminated. Or if you start digging you destroy important information in the soil around the objects or remains. So please, please don’t do it regardless of who keeps the finds.). The finds still belong to you, but tbh most of the stuff we find at these sites isn’t of much interest to the general public in and of themselves. For example, I have tons of prehistoric native pottery in the basement from my current dig that is just...pot sherds. Fragments of pottery. Hundreds of them. Hundreds of pieces of rock that are meaningless to lay people but tell us a lot about the people who lived at the site. So the answer is that yes, legally, if you find it on your property it belongs to you. Morally tho you should let the professionals at least be the ones to dig it up.

As much as I agree with a retreat from superstition, scientific endeavours have involved a lot of similarly barbaric practices, not least experiments on unwilling or unwitting subjects. This includes experiments by governments and often-lauded people, not leas Jonas Salk.
