Blacksmithing - Forging Swedish Style Hammers

I make two forging hammers based on the traditional Swedish pattern. The common cross peen and a matching straight peen hammer. For these I use the drift I made earlier to create eyes that match the factory made handles that I have access to.

As someone who does not do blacksmithing, I'm continually fascinated by how different it is from other forms of crafting. The way he imagines shape and plans his steps in advance is so much different from, say, woodworking or industrial metalworking. There's always at least one point in each of his videos where I say to myself "I don't see where this is going," and that makes it even more delightful and satisfying to see the final product take shape.

I no longer blacksmith for a living; cannot even do as a hobby thanks to a wrist surgery. But when I was full time at it all day everyday, hammers were what kept the doors open. Hammers were most favourite thing to forge and always my best product. It never gets old watching a blank piece of steel become a piece of art on a handle. I’m glad I can still get my forging fix vicariously through videos

I knew a blacksmith, the size of a small mountain, who had absolutely no idea how strong he was, so he would constantly "gently close the faucet" so hard his wife couldn't open it if her life depended on it. After some back and forth about the problem he bought a small pipe wrench for each faucet and placed under the corresponding zink, and told his wife that if she made a mark on the faucet that was on him, not her, because he knew that sooner or later he would be in a hurry, forget all about it, and leave her alone at the house "with no water". I always though that was such an adorably sweet solution.

Love the hammer, and I like the stickers to promote other smiths. Prolly not a direction anyone making their own hammers would go but I learned a trick for loose handles But my general my general purpose ball pain isn’t a custom forged hammer but soaking it over night in antifreeze then letting it dry fur a few days kept my handle tight for 3 years now.

I have an electrical profession, but here in Hungary In the first year of vocational schools, we received a basic training in metal industry, in the framework of which we had to make a hammer from square steel. It involved a lot of filing. I also made the half-kg standard hammer. I polished it thoroughly, with the oily chalk and a rag. You could have shaved so mirrored... The measurements were accurate to within 0.05 mm. I proudly take it to the master, he looked at it very carefully, then said that my son is doing well, excellent work. I proudly walked back to my workbench when he said after me: Come back my son! I went back. He looked at the hammer again and then slapped him. Take a look, and if you can't figure out why you were slapped, you'll get another one! I looked at the hammer and immediately noticed that I was drilling for an axe... But how much work was involved in filing it into a nice oval and conical shape...... I didn't deal with the second one that much. He didn't see chalk and an oily rag... Sorry about my english! I never learned this language, it just stuck with me...

Despite your natural talent, I think you have made hammers before. Regardless! I learned TWO important things from you just now: your lube is different than mine and I like yours better! Your tool for pre locating the eye? Genious! This I will copy! So you see, while you are in my neighborhood for a change, I learn from you! I am happy you chose 1045! Temper the wood with flame. Oil while the wood is still hot. You will be amazed how the hot wood absorbs the oil. Absolutely beautiful work!! Now make some with no fish mouth and excess material! lol! God Bless!

:) Thank you. Or you can heat the oil! Contemplating getting a fryer with some raw linseed oil in it for a change :) New larger radiused dies for the big hammer would have been better but I decided to go with the small ones this time. You can also make two hammers at the same time drawing down the peens in the center of the material and then cut them loose.
