I’ve had an IM Corona Old Boy for over 15 years. It has a side flame, good wind resistance, no buttons to hold down for a flame and is slender so it carries easy. They have a service center to ship it off to where 1 guy does all the work and will talk on the phone with you for hours about life. Good service from a long standing company. I’ve had it serviced twice in those 15 years costing $40 each time. I think that price included the built in poker that I lost…twice. Love the videos and hope your subscription base grows to keep you coming out with more content.

Great video, Jason! Love the "bait and switch" strategy where you talk about something important to some (but hardly all) people and transition into a philosophical discussion about stuff that REALLY matters. Although I have little interest in tobacco or bourbon, I will not skip these videos because I KNOW that you will also thoughtfully discuss things of much greater significance. Thank you for that! I hope that you, Danielle, and all your family had a great Thanksgiving! 🙂

It's your pipe, light it how you want. I've been known to pull a piece of steel out of my forge and light mine with that.

I’m particularly fond of zippo pipe lighters, with the flame opening on the side of the lighter, rather than the top. I really would like to try using a rope lighter, also known as a shepherd’s or sailor’s lighter, to light a pipe.

The torch lighter is like a life hack. Ciggies, pipes, weed, cigars when its windy af - you can light anything with it. 😎😎😎😎😎

I second the zippo pipe lighter. Since I don't smoke often, they do wick out the fuel in between. But I'm okay with it.

I'm late to the lighter conversation and new to pipe smoking. Have heard lots of people warning against using a jet flame to light the pipe. Decided to try it anyway based on Jason's videos. Tried it in a cob pipe just in case I messed it up. I figured aiming directly down into the bowl (not across it at all), would reduce the chances of scorching the bowl rim. One issue I have had with matches and 'soft' flame lighters, is that no longer how carefully I try to move the flame around the whole bowl, I always seem to end up with one small channel burning down into the bowl and a lot of unburned tobacco all around it. So I figured, maybe the jet will provide better control as I try to hit every spot evenly. It did. I was amazed at how far away from the bowl I could hold the jet and still light the tobacco. Even at the lowest jet flame I could see it lighting the tobacco from almost 3-4 inches above the bowl. I also learned that my aim sucks and not to hold the bowl as I used the torch lighter aimed down at the bowl and moving it around - ouch. I will probably stick with matches when not windy and my pipe insert Zippo when matches won't work well - but not against using the jet now and then either.

I like to use a double match method, it helps with keeping a flame going when outside, but it can still go out from wind

I used a torch lighter. Damaged my pipe a bit. But my torch lighter has 3 flames, so I wasn't too careful using it. Definitely much easier. But now decided to try a simple Zippo lighter.

I use one of three options. Matches is my main go to. The next is my Shepherd's lighter (rope lighter) and the third is my zippo with the pipe lighter insert.

I've found single flame torch lighters work well lighting and, keeping my pipe going. I'm glad to have the opportunity to say that one pipe that I used was a quad lighter ( four jet flames ) lighting all around for many times has burned up too quickly but, a single torch flame is the best for the pipe does not affect the pipe even a soft flame can burn a pipe. I smoke outside, the breeze sometimes makes me happy having a torch lighter.

I find the taste of hemp wick the nicest for softer flavoured tobacco but if I'm smoking something dark (Captain Earle's Nightwatch) I don't think I can tell the difference between matches, hemp wick or jet. Jet though like you said will get it started no matter what and is a reliable one to use no mater the weather. It's all down to preference and I kind of like the ritual of spending time nursing a good smolder with a wick or a match, when the winds come though out comes ol'reliable jet haha.

not very solid arguments against soft flame lighters: you also have to refill them once in several weeks, they are designed (Zippo) to not fade out to a soft wind blow, so I do not see that much difference with a torch lighter

fooy and pshaw to all naysayers of the torch lighter! Just like the best whiskey is whichever one you enjoy drinking, the best lighter is whichever one you like using. I use bic lighters, matches, torch lighters, hell I've pulled a small piece of pine from a fire and used that. Just get it lit and enjoy.
