Capaldi, the man who’s face appeared not once, not twice, but thrice in the whoniverse. The lack of foresight on production’s part was so astounding that when he became the Doctor they had to make his face _MEAN_ something.

It's not like they decide which actors play the doctor six years in advance! (Fires of Pompeii was 2008, was, Children of Earth was 2009) Capaldi became the Doctor in 2014, also there are so many actors in the UK. Also it's not the first time it has happened Colin Baker played a different Gallifreyan in 1983 called Maxil, when Peter Davison was The Doctor. Then in 1984 became The Doctor when Peter Davison left the role. Same think also happened with David Bradley who played a the villain called Solomon in Dinosaurs on a Spaceship (during Matt Smith's tenure), voiced an alien creature on The Sarah Jane Adventures, and later was picked to play the First Doctor (originally played by William Hartnell) first as William Hartnell in the biopic An Adventure in Time and Space then as the actual First Doctor during Peter Capaldi's final episode.

This is my absolute favourite season of the entire of Torchwood! It’s when they finally got the mix right with telling a more mature, grimmer story. Not to mention it’s a stripped-down, back-to-basics season where they’re completely without their high-tech gadgets or base. I can’t say enough good things about it: the cast, the acting, the writing, the production are all top-notch. 😀👏A few notes about this first episode: The hospital scenes near the start are actually filmed on the sets of a long-running British medical drama called “Casualty”. Also, presumably, the destruction of the Hub now means all the bodies/people in the morgue (including Gray!) are now gone too.😱

Watching this as a 15-year-old (and huge fan of TW) over the week that it originally aired in the uk I was completely and utterly unprepared for how dark this series would get, and yet it remains one of the best miniseries of a TV show that I've ever seen. I can't believe the BBC actually allowed RTD to actually go to the places that this series goes to, but I'm so glad they did (even though it probably scarred me for a good few years). Incredible writing, incredible acting, and still so unique over a decade after its original release.

This is imo the best season for Torchwood and I can't wait to see your reaction to the other 4 episodes. It's great seeing more of Ianto's family. Same with Jack. The kids are so creepy, but what really works is the sound effect of them talking at the same time. That is so powerful. The acting is top notch during these specials, and you have seen nothing yet of Capaldi's performance. The ending of the first episode is so stressful... Even waiting a day for the next episode was hard... Great reaction, don't worry about not saying much, you have to pay good attention to every detail in the episodes.

Another thing I absolutely love about this mini-series is the soundtrack, it's so good!! I actually bought the album when I was on vacation in London (couldn't find it in France). Some of the tracks are just haunting and beautiful at the same time.

I know this content is over 2 years old, but I have to say that this story, within the 'Whoniverse', was the most shocking, unsettling and horrific ever devised. It's possible Jack's "daughter" looked familiar because you'd just seen her a few minutes earlier in the episode. But since there was zero context as to who she was at the time, you just didn't register her as more than one of the establishing shots of what was happening to the children.

This series is amazing. I’ll let the other comments do most of the talking. The darkness but most startling, the realism is amazing. A little thing about this episode alone that I love is the whole sequence where they realise Jack has a bomb in his stomach. Daunting! Jack instantly puts everyone else before himself. And the soundtrack is amazing.

I think it's the episode where Gwen and Rhys get married, it ends with Jack looking wistfully at an old timey wedding portrait of himself and and an unnamed woman. Russell T. Davies said in an interview that Jack probably had other descendants. I haven't read any of the Torchwood novels, so I don't know if there's any mention of additional offspring.

At the time, it wasn't Mickey. Or, maybe it was, but the guy she was engaged to in the Sontaran two-parter was Tom. She might have broken the engagement off and immediately moved on to Mickey, who knows.

There's no way that woman could be Carole Ann Ford. That woman, Lucy Cohu, was in her late 30s, early 40s. Mid 40s tops. Carole Ann Ford was around 70 at the time of this season airing. Also, there have been hints in the show that Jack has had a personal life in various parts of history. There was that picture where he was married to someone during what looked to be in the early 1900s, then there was that lady studying fairies that he had a romantic relationship with, so it's not surprising that he didn't stop having a personal life every now and then. Looking at the wikia (which is actually pretty well sourced for a wiki), Jack got with an Italian Torchwood agent named Lucia Moretti, and Alice was their daughter.

As I grew older, the more I grew to dislike the first two seasons of Torchwood. Apart from a couple stellar episodes, I feel like it's too immature in its attempt to be "mature." I never finished the fourth series. I enjoyed what little I saw, but stopped and haven't bothered to pick back up. So to date, I can say that Children of Earth is the only series of Torchwood I like.

Definitely give Season 2 a second try. Season 1 mostly falls victim to the “immaturity” you’re talking about, but Season 2 has way more great episodes. Miracle Day isn’t really worth your time, but yes: children of earth remains the peak of Torchwood
