So happy it’s not a DND clone. And I think you one could redesign the math coursed by the exploding dice by using a pool of dice instead. That’s not a gamebreaker to me. That’s fixable.

I remember playing Torg in the 90's and still have a fondness for it, it was so different and fun, running from one place to another one time throwing a fire ball the next place we were having a laser pistol shoot out. it was amazing fun. I am glad to see they bring it back and I hope the cleaned up the magic systems because man that was a mess.

They did. The new one doesn't have the old's brilliant in-universe innovation... but unlike the old one, it works. And it's simple to GM. Same goes for miracles, psionics, etc. It's all the same system and it all just works.

Torg is one of my favorite games... I was fortunate enough to meet and game with Greg Gorden. Over the course of a couple of years, he ran several games for the group, including Torg, James Bond 007, and finally playtesting Earthdawn. If you should ever get the chance to have a game run by the guy who wrote the rules, I HIGHLY recommend it. It was amazing.

The original torg had dozens of suppliments. If torg eternity can build upon the good parts and remodel the questionable bits it will probably get me back into running a campaign.

As someone who's been GMing the new version for a year or so: Ulysses Spiele have done _exactly_ that. The best bits - player-controlled narrative via the cards, multi-dimensional weirdness - are there and better than ever. The worst mechanisms - looking through ten rulebooks for a system and wrapping your brain around ten contradictory ways things worked - are gone. Spells, miracles, psionics, perks... they all work the same way now, and it's consistent and simple to GM. The best bits of the setting - smuggling arms through pulp speakeasies while avoiding the Nile troopers, making contacts in a Hong Kong bar, riding dinosaurs and still fearing Baruuk Kaah and his army (yes, he's scary now and he holds personal grudges) - are all still there. And improved. (I especially love the new cyberpapacy; they've leaned into the cyberpunk to make it a story about being outpowered by a surveillance state - wherever you go, the GodNet is watching and your phone is spying on you for the Cyberpope and if you get seen the Church Police will _overwhelm_ you with massive firepower and no restraint.) The problematic bits - the 80s racism of the Japanese-firms-are-taking-over themes, the stupid 4th-wall-break metaplot jokes, nobody ever wanting to adventure in Orrorsh - are completely gone. And replaced with something _better_ in every case. Pan-pacifica now gets an engineered zombie breakout to scare people into compliance, Ryuchi Kanawa is just a for (won't say, but it makes the politics cooler). Tharkold is a fallout-style nuclear wasteland, ruled by demons that think your spellcasting is an invite to the snack bar, and the Russian oligarchs are in bed with them. And it doesn't matter whether you want to go to Orrorsh. Orrosh can come to you. Without warning. (And the Gaunt Man is not locked away in a convenient Mara ex Machina; he's awake and alert and in your dreams and he has an invasion to run.) The Ulysses Spiele Discord is quite active and the developers show up regularly to talk, so I'd suggest showing up there if you have questions. Or the forums at www.thepiazza.org.uk/bb/index.php

I'll always have a place in my heart for old TORG but the new game is a HUGE improvement. I very much recommend giving it a try. I just wish they'd make a starter set. Something like the original TORG box set.

I mean, I’m on the Ulisses Discord and already heard a bit about it but this was really, really insightful. I’ll definitely look into it once I have the money to spend! Fun fact, TORG is the fav RPG of Ulisses’ CEO (well the German CEO at least but I think he’s also got the say about the international divisions) and one of the reasons they even began producing it was because he wanted a new generation to be able to play it.

I jumped into a Torg Eternity session at a game store and was utterly baffled, in part because I didn't understand if the tone was serious or wacky and combat seemed impossible. This gives me some great insight into all of that! Turns out the tone is both. Aaaaaand the GM must've forgotten to hand out cards.

Oh, I’d love to watch a series of you reviewing the varying game systems! The incredible production value of your content, alongside your bluntness, and your ability to describe the rules and gameplay concisely, all provide a well rounded perspective. If you find yourself looking at another system, I would love to see a video about the Eastern TTRPG, Ryutama. I’ve read that it’s a system that puts the focus on the day to day travel of an adventure; with PCs including both heroics and non-heroics classes. I.E. the classic heroic warrior, or the not-classic merchant. I confess that I’ve not yet gotten to the game myself.

Look up Iconic Productions, Knights of the Smith Dinner Table, Exploring the Storm, and the Ulisses International KZbin Channels for Lets Play's. There are plenty of them out there. I find Iconic Productions to be the most fun, and they have great introductions to the game and to each adventure. I also find Torg to be imminently compatible with Roll20; I don't honestly know about other VTTs and how they run with all the rules, but a character sheet was built by GM Matt, originally, and when he was done developing it, a programmer named GiGs made it just sing. It takes care of so many things in the game, right now; I'm hoping he completes the third and fourth tabs of the game, soon. There are many videos on KZbin concerning making Roll20 and Torg Eternity run very smoothly and, I hope, Guy adds to that number. That being said, I would love to run a game for Guy and friends, play in one of Guy's Torg RPG games, or at least see a let's play video for it from Guy and friends. I've been involved in Torg since Role-Playing the Possibility Wars came out in 1991, mostly as the GM and offer my services in being able to set up and run a game, or running it, myself.

Seconded; the Roll20 Torg character sheet is _magnificent_ as of the latest revision. And the roll20 card deck is reasonably priced. I'm hoping to implement Torg in Foundry once it can do cards, and the current roll20 sheet is the gold standard I'll be aiming for.

I played TORG Eternity a couple of times last year and really enjoyed it. I felt more free to ramp up the tropes and stereotypes of my Victorian big game hunter to a true imperial redcoat, who only very slowly showed the other storm knights his emotional side. In Dungeons and Dragons the tropes of a barbarian in a loincloth and a wizard with a pointy hat and staff often feel tired but in TORG one can truly embrace the Pulp.

The basics (that involve the charts) are a bit jarring at first but you get used to them in a few sessions. The one thing that we found as a bit of an issue is that the card play in the game is geared towards there being a minimum 4 players. Less than this, and it just doesn't quite flow properly (based on card play from the original TORG, first time players/GM's may not be aware of this). There is an option on the forums for "ghost hands" of cards to make up for less than of 4 players.

Sidenote based on your opening : DnD is Setting, its mechanics are interlinked with some very specific concepts of cosmology that are entwined, that you cannot easily remove the setting from the mechanics. In the end concepts like its Prime vs Elemental vs Higher/Lower planes, Demons, Devils, Angelics, etc and the afterlife settings etc are all part of the magic, the storylines and how things work.

Also, in regard to the tables, the only one I've found that the players need to consult regularly is the bonus chart. The chart is printed on the official character sheets, a free pdf of which is available here on the Ulisses website for free: www.ulisses-us.com/wp-content/uploads/2017/08/TORG_Character_Sheet_Flat.pdf . The damage table is on the GM screen, but after a few combats I never need to consult, its a short table that I memorize quite quickly.

I played TORG back in the 90's and the basic rules are pretty much the same. The conversion from roll to bonus was only a minor irritation, but it moderates the impact of the exploding rolls. Speaking of which possibilities and certain cards allow rolling an additional d20 too. The cards were great fun, and our group mastered using them, with the result that we'd see multiple rolls of 100+ every session and the power level was superheroic tending toward demigods.

From what I see on the Amazon link the DRAMA deck($25 US) is NEEDED to play the game and NOT included with the purchase of a Core Rules($50 US)! That is something that is an immediate turn off for me, I don't mind the meta stuff if it is basic stuff that most people have lying around their houses(probably) or are pretty cheap, like Deadlands using standard decks of cards and poker chips(or three different colored things to represent). To even get started with this game you have to spend $75 US, this is EXPENSIVE, and another turn off for me! The game sounds AMAZING but right off the bat there are two MASSIVE negatives that take me out immediately!

The cards are a big part of the system, the chips can be replaced. You can run the game without the cards. Cards improve combat, give a lot to players and add a great layer of world context so it makes a real difference to play. They are not mandatory.
@TynamM
@TynamM 4 жыл бұрын
@rosencrux is right - it's easy to modify the game to run without the cards, but it's much cooler with them. Also, it's much fairer to sell the cards separately, because if you're a player you might well want your own copy of the rule book, but you don't need your own copy of the deck. The GM having one is enough.

Torg has been a favorite for me since 1990. The bonus chart is strange at first, but if you stick with it, it becomes almost automatic (for numbers 30 or lower) and it's easy enough (for me at least) to count up by 5's for the remainder. And although it's built to handle the Possibility Wars setting, the serial numbers can be filed off and used generically with a bit of work establishing Axiom Levels and World Laws for your new settings.

My friends, it is impossible to condense the rules of this amazing game into a 30-minute video. Guy, you're wonderful in these videos and I truly appreciate all the work you do; however, there's so much role-playing goodness involved in Torg that a series of shorter videos explaining the various aspects would be more in order.

I don’t entirely understand the Axioms. What’s the difference between Spirit and Magic? And what does the Social number represent exactly? Is it like, advocating too many civil rights in a medieval setting will cause a contradiction that turns you into a serf or something?
@grayscribe1342
@grayscribe1342 4 жыл бұрын
Axioms are representations of the world's (Cosm's/Reality's) basic rules. A Tech score of (I think) 3 is the Stone Age. For normal people going to a Cosm with that rating all technology beyond the Stone Age stops working. The higher the Tech Rating, the more technology is possible. The Nippon (Cyberpunk) allows Cybertechnology, the Cyberpapacy as well, but it's more advanced and the Technodemons advance it even further. Magic is about how easily Magic can be used and how large the effects can be. Social describes the Social size and complexity of society and if belief allows for miracles and how powerful they are. When an invasion happens, the Axioms are changed in a part of the invaded world and nearly everything is converted to the rules of the invading Cosm. For example, if the Living Land invades most of the countryside is changed to a primordial jungle and people get transformed into humanoid, sentient and tribal dinosaurs. Sometimes old some of the buildings remain fully or as ruins and also some humans may not change. The Nippon Tech invasion wasn't even noticed at first, being so subtle. Some people and countries started to notice the change when Cyberware and other unusual technology became available in Japan. And so on. The PC's are some of the few people that can change between the different Cosms or even be in an invaded part of the world without being changes. They can also cling to the Axioms of their Home Cosm So a Wizard from a magical Cosm can still use his spells in our world while such a soldier from our world can still use his assault rifle in a Stone Age Cosm. Now where did I put these old novels?
@TynamM
@TynamM 4 жыл бұрын
Magic is, well, magic. A high magic axiom means that D&D wizards are possible. The higher the rating, the more powerful spells can be. (In lower-magic axioms, only the weaker, simpler spells work.) Spiritual axiom covers _faith_. A high spirit axiom means that some religion is literally true, and priests routinely use miracles for day-to-day tasks. Medium spirit axiom gets you simple miracles that are plausibly-deniable - blessings, healing that won't cure actual gaping wounds, etc.. Low spirit axiom means everyone's an atheist. And yes, the Social axiom limits how advanced your social concepts are. If you're from an advanced society inside a low-social axiom D&D-style setting, talking about concepts like - for example - the UN, or corporate charters, would cause a contradiction. Player characters cause contradictions all the time, of course - but if you roll that 1, you're going to disconnect and have to play entirely by the local rules until you can reconnect yourself to your own reality. Your character would likely forget tricky ideas like being loyal to an abstract democratic republic, instead remembering their boss NPC as their liege lord or something... until they reconnect. Similarly, if you use a high-Tech plasma weapon in a low-Tech environment and roll that 1... no more computers for you until you reconnect.
@maddockemerson4603
@maddockemerson4603 4 жыл бұрын
So, Spirit is just Magic with extra steps. That’s what I thought. Why bother splitting hairs like that? I’m still not entirely convinced of how Social could be implemented in an entertaining way.

Have they "fixed" the "glass-jawed ninja" problem from the mechanics of the original? This is where the damage inflicted is related to how well you roll to hit. This meant that you could have an opponent that was really difficult to hit, so you had to roll really high to get a big bonus to hit. Then when you did hit, you also did massive damage, so the target would always dance around you (metaphorically or literally) and then go down with a single lucky blow. D&D 5e sort of suffers from the same problem where any hit on a high AC target is a critical - well, RAW it is anyway.

As I take it, possibilities belong to characters as their game-specific superpower, while cards are totally the province of the players. I liked the old Torg in the '90s -- it was the last RPG I played before life changed and I had no one to play with for ages. Old versus new? The old Torg was more complex with a complexity creep, but more nuanced, do to different rules for different power types (e.g., miracles and magic having totally different mechanics).

I'd be interested to know how the game works for one-shot adventure game-days vs. long term campaigns. What is character advancement like? What's the power curve? Is a one-day adventure as rewarding an experience, or are the players just paper heroes afraid of every shadow?
@TynamM
@TynamM 4 жыл бұрын
Torg was my favourite game to GM for convention one-shots back in the 90s, and the new version makes that easy; any of the precreated character templates (and they're up over 100 now!) is ready to go as-is. And yes, one-day adventures are rewarding. (I find the 'Day One' intro adventures to actually be best played as 2-3 sessions to have room to breathe, and run shorter encounters as convention one-shots.) Campaigns are even more rewarding, for the usual reasons - the GM can layer and build the roleplay and the world. Advancement is slow and steady - one session will get you a skill point somewhere, and a couple of sessions gets you a nice perk. Ten or twenty games gets you into a whole better tier of power (a 'clearance level' in Torg-speak). XP is awarded at the party level, so new characters automatically slot in at the same level as the party - obviously that's easily changed if you don't like it, but I prefer it for Torg. (In a wonderful habit every game should adopt... every character template comes with suggestions on the back for the first five or six things to buy with your XP for that character.) No paper heroes in Torg. Characters in Torg are badass from the moment they're created... but they're also in a dangerous war story, so death happens. Threats come in a VERY wide range of difficulty. Ordinary minions like basic Gospog drop like bowling pins at the mere presence of a PC; on the other hand, the lead villains - the High Lords - are a TPK risk even after you've gone up multiple tiers. But mostly, as with everything in Torg, threat levels depends on the genre of reality you're in at the time. In the Living Land you expect to fight armies of lizard-men head-on. In the Cyberpapacy you're on cyberpunk rules - the aim is to not get caught, because an overwhelming force of Church Police firepower will turn you into expanding plasma; run away, and fight only when forced. In the 30s-pulp Nile Empire reality you're as tough as The Shadow and if you lose you won't die anyway; someone will capture and monologue at you instead. (There's actually a rule for losing on purpose to learn villain plans.) In the Gothic horror reality of Orrorsh... move carefully. Don't split the party. And don't blink. The best mental picture of the power level is this - for your picture of ordinary Earth player characters, think of Bruce Willis in "Die Hard". A PC can't get away with physically suicidal things, but they can do dramatic and risky things to bring down the bad guys with reasonable certainty that it ends in a dramatic final confrontation with the villain, not an ignominious splat on the way. For D&D players: adventuring in the high-fantasy realm of Aysle, a new Torg character feels like about a L4-6 D&D character... they're not fragile, they can take on minor threats confidently, and the wizards have got three or four spells to choose from, but they still need to be worried when the mythical creatures come out to play.

Thanks for the video as always :) It'd be great to see some practice next (whether playing or character creation). Personally I feel axioms deserve to have a more through explanation, especially Social. On the lore side, is there something about language barrier? currency issues? are clothes affected by contradictions (some pigments or materials haven't always existed)?
@TynamM
@TynamM 4 жыл бұрын
For GMing convenience, contradictions affect tools-like properties more than clothes. A mere contradiction won't change your clothes much visually... but you'll lose any benefits; armour might phase out or just stop working. The axioms don't limit physics so much as they limit what you can use effectively as a tool; it's not that gunpowder stops being explosive, it's that complex tools using that to shoot bullets fast cease to exist (or you forget how to use them). Likewise, disconnect in the low-Social Living Land and you might forget you're a US police officer and just remember that your tribe is the Law tribe. If you actually _transform_ - permanently change, not just temporarily disconnect - then your clothing and items would change to match your new reality. But that doesn't usually happen to PCs; it's for everyone else. (And it doesn't change past memories; a nerd transformed into a wizard would remember driving places, even though he no longer remembers exactly how you go about driving.) Do NOT replace your heart with a cybernetic pump and then go adventuring somewhere low-tech. You don't want your first critical failure to kill you. (This is actually a plot point; the Cyberpope encourages all his followers to become one with God through the miracle of cyberware. It's cheap, and the church is happy to install it for you safely. Oh dear, does that mean you're now a captive citizen who literally can't leave the country because nowhere else has a cyberpunk tech axiom except for the scary demon lands? Gosh, what a coincidence.) The rule of thumb is - whatever's convenient or fun to roleplay is how it works for any individual item, as long as you don't actually use anything over the axiom limits. (There can be partial limits, too, where an item falls under more than one axiom. A magic flaming sword, disconnected outside Aysle, will probably still work fine _as a sword_. It's still a sharp piece of metal. It's just over the local magic level, so no flames.)

I played a one shot at a convention. I didn't care for it. It was really fidgety and my character hit some bad rolls and suffered from contradictions making him mostly useless, while another character that was native to the region had no difficulty with contradiction. Not saying it's a bad game, but I don't think it's for me.
@TynamM
@TynamM 4 жыл бұрын
Ouch, unlucky - and clumsy; a convention one-shot should have characters who will be useful no matter what. (With experience most Torg characters can do useful things even when disconnected, but wizards etc. can be hit particularly hard.) Torg is meant to be a globe-hopping game, so native-to-the-reality advantages even out quickly in campaign play. (Especially as it's a disadvantage as well as an advantage... it means you can't exceed local limits.)

Hmmm... maybe we have other experiences or they have reworked the rulebook a lot in layout and stuff like more clear rulings and for example a properly expanded gearlist (I am not talking only weapons which feel not bad) but I had a mostly horrible experience. The setting is great, I like it but playing it with the rules presented was a horror, especially on higher experience settings. The scaling is... let's be nice and call it "sub-optimal".

Only in that you can change Genre on the fly. TORG actualy make a more coherent system, Where Cypher makes for a great improvisation system. But they play very diffrently. TORGs use of scenes gives it a feel much like a tv-series, and Cypher like a good show. I love both systems, and this review has actualy ignoted the TOG itch again. Hmm do I ditch the Pendragon campaign I have just finished planning?

I came into TORG eternity looking for a substitute to RIFTS, as I do not much care for that system, but what I found is basically a system heavily inspired by Savage Worlds, which can be a good thing if you like that, but unfortunately I do not. So while the setting is rather clever and interesting, I could not stand the mechanics nor the cards so eventually I passed on it. SPECIAL ROLL20 MENTION: SOME of The Cards needed for TORG (the Drama deck) can be bought in the Roll20 marketplace now and you can buy the other decks as pdf from drivethrurpg.com, but you will still need to manually import them in roll20 to make your decks, which is a mayor pain in the a**. But hey at least you do not need anymore to buy a physical copy of the deck, scan all the cards AND THEN import them manually in roll20.

@@alessandrobruschi2445 No problem. Clearly the involvement of the developer in the reboot saw him bringing some lessons from Savage Worlds. The Cosm cards were not a thing in oTorg, the laws of the reality were driven by the GM. In Torg:E a large amount of that falls in the PC's hands. Clearly "that" did come from Savage Worlds experience

3.296 / 5.000 Resultados de traducción Resultado de traducción For me TORG Eternity has been a pleasant surprise that is meeting my expectations, exceeding them in several areas and seems fun to play. It's the kind of game that doesn't pretend to be any kind of generic system, TORG is for playing TORG. TORG is not even a name, it's an acronym for The Other Roleplaging Game. They never found a name they liked, so they used the initials. It's funny how some things happen. The tactical combat aspect can be a problem for players not used to it but the game at least explains why this is the case and what players can do. "Creating combinations of destiny cards may be necessary to defeat powerful enemies" for example. It's not much, but it helps players who haven't used similar systems before to understand the purpose and possibilities of these gadgets. The same happens with the destiny pool, players have to think carefully about what cards they use and in what order. The drama cards make each turn of combat different from the previous one, that unpredictability and randomness is, I think, a point in favor of the game. Players can never have a perfect optimal strategy they must constantly adapt to ever changing conditions. At the same time, the difference between a normal combat and a dramatic combat is a way of making it clear to the players when the danger is greatest. The mere fact of changing the results of the cards is more than enough. Drama decks apparently replace the original drama deck (used in Core Earth) in the cosm they are released for making adventures there more themed and better representing the themes of the cosm. The other types of cards are added to the respective decks increasing the variety. Disconnection is an interesting mechanic, there are even builds around that mechanic. It's part of what makes each cosm different from the others along with the Laws, it's what allows genres as disparate as horror and epic fantasy to exist in the same universe and happen to the same PCs during the same campaign. In general it is best to use things that can cause ds connection only when strictly necessary. The bonus chart is certainly cumbersome, but it's the only rule of its kind in the entire game, used constantly and unchanged, so it's acceptable. I guess the more you play the faster everything is calculated. The GM table is very useful in that regard. On the other hand the damage of the attacks is fixed unless there are modifiers. The amount of adventures for TORG Eternity is huge, Delphi missions and a campaign for each Cosm. The delphi missions with the corebook, several more scenarios and one or two additional campaigns. Entire campaigns can be played using only official quests without repeating. For GMs with little time to create adventures it is certainly a great advantage. The biggest drawback of the game for me is the absence of a conflict or social influence system. A real shame especially given how restoring hope to the people and proving that High Lords can be demonstrated is a vital part of the game with significant mechanical and narrative effects on some of the most important actions that can be taken against the invaders.
