You’re in for such a treat with Tori Amos’ catalog because she’s one of those very rare artists like Madonna and PJ Harvey where every single album is radically different in sound, in production, in vocal style, in theme, in presentation, in visuals… there are no two Tori Amos albums that sound alike. I hope you react to another album of hers sooooon.

Tori grew up playing in gay bars. Her father drove her there because the other bars wouldn't let her play. Y Kant Tori Read was a rock band she was forced to join because her record company thought no one would want to listen to a woman talking about her feelings with a piano. After that album tanked they finally let her do her thing. Her lyrics are often wrapped in literary and cinematic references and metaphors, so it's ok if you miss some of the meanings ! Upside Down is indeed about her strict upbringing, Sweet Dreams is a jab at American politicians, in Flying Dutchman she promises a brighter future for a misunderstood kid (probably her past self. The Flying Dutchman is a myth about the ghost of a pirate, you should look into it !)
