There is a reason Tori Amos has cross over appeal to fans of Hard Rock and Metal. She is REAL. And to your point of her piano playing, you are spot on. She is that much at ease with the piano she clearly is not having to think about the playing, she is just feeling and letting the piano express it. Phenomenal artists. This coming from a metal head.

Yup. When I was 16 and into everything from Sepultura, Pantera, Carcass, Meshuggah, and Morbid Angel, to Faith No More, The Chili Peppers, Smashing Pumpkins, Helmet, Fugazi, and everything in between, there was only one female artist the metalheads, goths, hard-rockers, and death-metal fans agreed upon: Tori. I remember Crucify, Precious Things, Winter, and Tear in Your Hand being played to death on the Jukebox. When Under The Pink was released, it became my favourite album overnight. Then Boys For Pele, From the Choirgirl Hotel, To Venus and Back, and Scarlet's Walk. All classic albums regardless of what genre you are into. The only other female musicians I remember everyone liking were Heather Nova, Fiona Apple, Portishead, and later, people like Lisa Hannigan.

One reason may be that her songs are emotionally intense which makes them less commercial - she was influenced by Laura Nyro who had limited fame partly for this reason, despite quite a few of Nyro's songs being major hits for other artists who would tone down the intensity. Nyro is seismically influential on songwriters - see Nyro's song Captain for Dark Mornings (1969), and Kate Bush and Tori will make sense in terms of their style.

Because they placed tons of advertising with those two women and even if Tori is leaps and bounds better than those two combined she's not nearly as commercial and definitely not going to be that appealing to the masses which is why both the other artist are and those types will always be more commercial because more people like that type pop, rock, R&B, rap etc. We're just blessed to still have her and all the music she's given us over the years.

I have a confession. My wife has been playing Tori Amos records in my home since the 1990s, but I haven't really appreciated her until recently. Why has it taken me so long ? I don't know. I was a big Kate Bush fan in the 1980s - maybe I thought she was an imitator or something. My failure to appreciate her is embarrassing. Finally in 2022, now I appreciate what a massive incredible talent unique she is. On the plus side, now I can spend all my time listening to her many albums with a new ear for the first time and I am really looking forward to it.

Winter is one of those songs that's great that it wasn't a top 10 hit, because it makes it feel rare. There are so many watered down piano songs that get overplayed on the radio. Winter remains a Tori fan exclusive and we like it that way.

Lol, given that she wrote a book since her last big album (Native Invader©️2017) called Resistance, she almost always wrote & published an album 1yr, then toured the following yr. That’s unless she did some kind of project album like Tales of a Librarian. She didn’t partake in Lilith Fair(she was doing fine on her own) but she did do the 5 1/2week Tour ~1998 I caught her at that she divided the concert fare in half w/Alanis Morissette…as ex.’s. The last thing she did was the Christmastide EP©️2020(w/Matt Chamberlain &Jon Evans-back 2gether again😊), so as long as the “isms” of the male dominated music industry doesn’t stop the continued momentum & success of her illustrious career (as long as she wants to cont.) w/her loyal fan base w/added post millennials then I REALLY hope🤞🏻she does put out a whole new album w/a brand new tour❣️😇.

I will always remeber the first time I heard Tori. She was on italian TV, on a late night talk show, promoting Little Earthquakes. Unfortunately I can't remember exactly what song she played (I like to believe it was Silent All These Years because that's one of my favourite songs... but I'm not sure now). Anyway, the point of my story is a different one. Everyone loved her, the song (whichever it was) was so beautiful and unexpected that everyone on the stage was left in awe (the show was recorded in a theater and there were at least half a dozen guests on stage). The show host asked her if she was willing to play another song (and this was totally unscripted), so she walks over to the piano, sits down, thinks for a little while and says. "Nobody knows my songs, let's play something everybody loves." And she played and sang a song by the Rolling Stones (can't remember if it was Ruby Tuesday or Wild Horses - this is many years ago - but definitely one of these two). And I was so struck by this: you're an unknown artist, singer, pianist and composer, and unexpectedly you get a chance to sing a second song... and instead of showing off, you play a cover because you feel that the audience will appreciate it more? I loved it. Since then, I've been a great fan and have seen her play live several times.

I'm always trying to figure out why I'm so moved to my core by this performance. Besides all the wonderful things that you bring up about it. What is it for me? I think I'm finally on to it. Accepting that change is in the order of things and acceptance of it.

MY QUEEN. Sometimes she takes a while to get used to. I feel like this song (and the Little Earthquakes album as a whole) is a gateway for a lot of people. The next several albums get weirder and less accessible in a lot of ways, but also better as she starts maturing and refining her style. She's just such an incredible artist. She has a prolific catalog of live covers too, and a lot of rock songs among them. Some I'd suggest specifically for you with your tastes: Lovesong, Smells Like Teen Spirit, Karma Police, Dream On, Losing My Religion, and Turn the Page.

The lyrics often describe nightmares so I wouldn’t try falling asleep to her.

Oh this is a gentle song. There are songs in which she sounds menacing. She’s fantastic. check out her album Boys for Pele. It’s my favorite of hers.

I once met Tori, not knowing who she was. She was a wild beauty and I was impressed. I was working at the LAX Marriott hotel in Los Angeles, setting up audio and video equipment. She grabbed a sleeve and handed me a flyer about a performance she was part of. I smiled, said something, she departed and I went on with my work. Such is life. I was hoping you were going to show her doing 'Caught A Light Sneeze', but I can see that it doesn't really show Tori and her piano work. Carry on.

Love the way you isolate her breathing patterns. Even back since first listening to her as a teen and would sing along while I drove, Tori is 1000% the only artist where I always would “sing” along with her breathing just as much as her lyrics as part of the song. Never gave it much thought other than “that’s Tori” and it’s part of the song, but I love the way you tapped into that and walk through it with some intention. Made me think a lot more about it consciously, and the effect it has.

Tori is an incredible singer/songwriter, who's notable as having synesthesia that affects how she processes sounds. For her, different sounds produce different light images, making songs appear as strings off color.

I listened to her she’s great. I don’t think I ever recovered from how far my eyes rolled into the back of my head.

What a remarkable artist this young lady is. I had never heard of her until now and this song absolutely captivated me. And your explanation of her vocal style and pattern of breathing for emphasis and emotion was so educational, Fil. Good job and what a great find for me. I will now look into her more thoroughly and listen to more of her music. This is the first time since I have been a Winger that I have felt compelled to go and seek out this person.
