When I was in Dublin in 1994, right after Kurt Cobain died, I’d just recorded a cover of Smells Like Teen Spirit and when I started it, all the lighters came out and everybody was singing. You’d have thought that it was planned. Thousands of people were singing softly, like a lullaby. It was beautiful. It was almost like we were singing Kurt to bed. It was quite a moment and it was really out of my control. I was a part of something with them. -Tori, Q Magazine, 2001. RIP Kurt.

It kind of defeats the point of a cover if it sounds like the original, doesn't it? Kurt Cobain liked Tori's version of it and he would dance around the kitchen with Courtney Love to it, plus the band would come on stage to it at live gigs. It's okay if you dislike it, but you've got to give Tori props for having the balls to make it different. Would you rather listen to this or the Smiley Virus version (carbon copy more like)?

If you read the piano music you can see her genius. She echoes main melody of the song at times when that melody isn't being sung. And her bass, though simple, is off beat and conveys the rhythm of the original. All of it plays on your subconscience.
