It's amazing how a song can take on a different meaning, the older I get. I'm 43 and have been a fan since my early teens. I have two amazing children and I just played this song for them while making a valentine box for school ... And I just lost it and balled. Her lyrics and metaphors are so powerful. They continue to be an influence and inspiration for the way I think about things and view life. Truly an artist that reaches the soul like very few can.

I totally agree with you. This was my gf’s favorite record when it came out. I think it was because she too was a redhead and had a complicated relationship with her dad. She loved this song. We used to sing “when you gonna love you as much as I do” and laugh. We’d look at each other when Tori sang “never change” and wonder what was to be. She went missing later that summer. That fall her dad called me when they found her body to tell me she was pregnant at the time she was murdered. I’ve listened to this song so many times, and as the decades pass I hear new things. But some days I feel like it’s never changed.

The first time I heard this was on a cold Winter day in my car. I pulled over to listen, mesmerized, on an icy road under falling snow, living in a town I hated but couldn't leave. I didn't catch who it was on the radio. It was like the time I saw the most beautiful woman in the world on the Star Ferry crossing from Hong Kong to Kowloon, simply brush the hair out of her eyes, and I saw novels. I listened to the same station hoping to catch the song again and find out who it was. Some time later, I lay in bed late one night and the song came on the radio. I was transfixed when the phone rang. A very rare event in my tiny basement apartment. I didn't jump out of bed to answer it. I had to hear this song again, see the beauty in Hong Kong again, and learn who was singing. The phone rang and rang and then stopped. The next day my mother called me. She said, "Your grandmother died yesterday. I tried to call you."

I still have the recording from that time, and on my birthday, more than 30 years later, I miraculously heard the sound from the cassette tape I had recorded of the program. Also, technical mystery on this song, I'm shocked this was shot in HD in 1991. Very very few HD cameras back then. Either that or somebody did a stellar upscale of this video.

i sang this at karaoke yesterday for the first time, taking inspiration from this live version. i was worried that either (a) i would butcher the pitch, as i sometimes do for songs; or (b) people wouldn't be interested because it's a slow song and they probably wouldn't know it. but i didn't mess it up, and the bar was transfixed!! my boyfriend heard someone say, "i don't know this song, but i like it". such an incredible song. 🤍

My father died in May of 2015. Tori was one of his favorite musicians, and he was the one who made me a huge fan of hers in my pre-teen and teen years. When papa wasn't listening to talk radio, he would play one of the CDs that he burned of her live performances and other recordings, and he bought me copies of "Little Earthquakes" and "Under The Pink" for my 13th birthday. Ever since his passing, I make sure to listen to Tori's music on his birthday (Feb. 18) and Father's Day. Rest in peace, dad. Until we meet again someday.

Tori is amazing. I've watched many people sing songs over my 50 years. Before she sings, you can see a memory spark for her. She's far away in the past but at the same time, present with her audience. It's a rare thing to see in artists who sing the same songs thousands of times during their career. She is one of a kind.

Listened to this on my evening walk. I listened to the album version first and then listened to this live performance. It was still playing when I walked up on the porch and I stood and watched my wife feeding our kids through the window. It truly was surreal.

So so lovely. 28 or 29, but she looks even younger. This is so pure, and her signature way of gazing out into the audience and her magical presence is already there.

This has to be one of the greatest live performances I've ever seen. The emotional immediacy of every line is staggering, it's the kind of song where you're almost riding along on it from moment to moment. At 4:57, as Tori's singing 'All the white horses', it almost looks as if the song gets too much even for her. A moment of truly raw emotion in a performance full of them.

My grandmother loamed me the money for my first "professional" camera, for a class in college. But, I spent too much time taking pictures instead of printing them in the chemical lab, so I had to drop the class. I always felt bad because I never paid her back the money for it. But, years later, when she was mostly legally blind and couldn't see the butterflies anymore,I would use my phone to take pictures of the ones I saw for her. I could bring the flowers to her, but not the butterflies, so I had to capture them with a lens. I think I paid her back in the photos I didn't take for the class. The ones that I took for others and for her.

All time favorite Tori tune. Last night I had a flotation therapy session and I had my own playlist i made on in the pod. When this song came on.... holy hell. I cant even describe the feeling of being completely surrounded by this song. Just feeling that building composition wash over me. The whole experience took me somewhere outside of the pod. If you float and like to listen to your own playlists, definitely add this track. Its amazing
