”4 boxes of 4": magnificent. Was living in Brighton at the time and always regretted not doing the small trip and seeing the real thing. Always remembered that substantial Tornado formation, made me very happy and I never forgot it, on TV. Frightening feel to it, but at the same time comforting. And here, 15 years later, from the effin cockpit. From an "ex pat" in the far, far east, this is bloody paradise, great post.

Sorry for my very late reply, thank you. Nearly 25 years ago now and I still remember it like yesterday!

The most awe inspiring video I've seen for a long time. Reminds me of my days at Bruggen in the early 1960's when the squadron flew Canberra PR7s. Beautiful aircraft . We have a B2 flying regularly here in Australia. Who remembers the LABS runs of the B9's at Bruggen?

Thank you for that lovely comment. Just glad it reminded you of such a great event. Cheers.

Still reeling from this one. Nice bit of Gunnersbury Park at the end, and the Kew Bridge district. I still maintain, though, the post has a decidedly apocolyptic feel to it.

Hi, I tried running this video through a de-interlacer (mencoder's -vf yadif=2_ option). It helps to make edges less jagged in the parts where the camera isn't moving a lot. Thought you might find it useful to know. Great video! :-)

@Studmasterify Sorry for my late reply. The Tornado is a twin seater with the pilot fron and navigator in the back. It was the nav who did the filming for me.

I'm 15, ex air cadet, planning to join the RAF! Hoping that there'll still be manned aircraft by that time xD nice flying :)

Holy Smokes!! Isn't this remarkably dangerous, flying in such proximity? I know nothing of the performance of such a powerful jet, but are wind gusts/shear, etc., a factor? Congratulations to every one of those pilots for handling the training and hard work it took to reach such a skill level.

Hi, yes I remember CJ very well indeed and we got on very well. In fact I have been in recent communication with your mum on the 14 Sqn Facebook page. I was very sad to hear the news but also could not understand how I never knew about it.. I also believe you might know my daughter Leona. Take care. Spanners

flying formation is tuff! the camerman pilot is no sloch flying up the twin bums of the lead Tornado!

Well pointed out Simon and I agree with you. However I was referring to "bombs" etc for somebody that does not have our vast knowledge and experience of military aircraft. P.S. Bozz and ECM pods (outboard stores) did not have any live ERUs due to the high value and classification of them!

Is this a twin seater? Can't imagine the pilot is holding a handycam with one hand and flighting it with the other

Just curious to know one thing. Why the aircrafts are called Tornadoes? Also, interested to know the rules or conventions behind the naming of any aircraft series. Thanks in advance

The Squadrons at Bruggen only had about 10-12 useable aircraft each. The formation was for 16 aircraft. We used aircraft from across the whole wing. We deployed from Bruggen to RAF Leeming a week before the event with about 25 aircraft I think (It was certainly far more than 16). This gave us time to practice for the main event and gave us plenty of spare aircraft. 14 Sqn was considered to be the lead Sqn in control but it was in fact a mixture of aircraft and aircrew from all of Bruggen that participated. It was only 14 Sqn groundcrew that deployed to Leeming. Hope this explains why you saw 31 Sqn aircraft also in the video. I also served on 31 Sqn a few years earlier.

@@Martinspans ever on 15? Trying to track down Mike Foreman, short blond scottish joker (pilot)
@Martinspans6 жыл бұрын
@@zdavies435 No, sorry I never served on 15 Sqn and have no recollection of Mike Foreman either. Was that 15 Sqn at Laarbruch and Tornados or was it Buccaneers. I am still in contact with quite a few jockey's from around the Tornado world so I could ask around if you want.

I think you will find Tornado's were always armed if carrying stores in case of selective or emergency jettison !!!
@Martinspans11 жыл бұрын
They are not bombs, they are fuel tanks and on the outer wings, electronic pods. The aircraft were completely un-armed!!
