The trees had all that wind resistance with tall branches and leaves. The pot was just a terracotta pot filled with dirt and low to the ground. Not a lot of drag for the wind to catch.

I actually live in portage. This was about a mile away from me. Infact there was actually 4 different tornadoes in Michigan the same day. They were all at max two miles away from my house. The one you're seeing in the video was "only" going 36 mph. I got very very lucky
@MLMLWАй бұрын
I hate seeing all those trees destroyed but am glad that the home wasn't. We had a bad ice storm back in the 70s and the ice accumulated so much on one of my dad's favorite hardwood trees that it uprooted, as well as a bunch of pine trees. After the ice melted he got some help to hoist the tree back up to a standing position after reburying the roots and tied ropes around it that were staked to the ground to keep the tree standing. He wanted to see if the roots would incorporate & grow back into the soil. It worked and my dad was so happy he could save that tree.
@yellowbird5411Ай бұрын
I think most trees would survive if the roots didn't dry out. Yay!
@lauriegentry7764Ай бұрын
I was just going to say that. There’s a way to save them by re-burying them, and supporting until roots reconnect to soil. I’d do anything to save my trees.
@wandabadgerow8207Ай бұрын
the last hurricane we had took out 85% of our 120 acre hardwood trees. Our house was fine , 2 yrs on and still cleaning up the fallen trees. We were able to mill enough wood to build 10 houses for the needy..we donated it in exchangge for free labor. The rest we stored. I miss the privacy we had , but grateful no one lost their lives.

Everybody except for me got moved to a hotel which was actually closer to where the tornado was. I got to stay at the previous hotel that day which was farther north in kzoo. I'm glad i got to keep my original room because it wasnt windy like it was at the hotel in portage.

Trees are pretty susceptible to high winds. All those branches with leaves catch the wind and cause the tree to take a lot of force.

Those trees fell before the tornado even arrived. People that trim up trees this way are setting the tree up for ultimate destruction even from just straightline winds. Topping overgrown trees instead and creating lower profile regrowth minimizes wind leverage. I had two neighbors trim their trees to grow so tall. Eventually storm tore them down. Mine still stand today.

Ik not saying these trees wouldn't habe fallen during yhe dtorm anyway but this is why its important to have a system of trees not just a couple trees. You need soke plants to form a barrier/wind break for the others so they dont all get the full force in f wind

I have a question. When I hear about the trees that are destroyed in a tornado, I think of them being uprooted and sucked up into the air. These however are not uprooted, almost pushed down to the point of breaking. What is causing this? I’ve heard of down drafts and we actually had an outside building look as though it explode from wind that came down into it. We were told there was no tornado with Thai storm, just “strong down drafts”, or maybe the term down burst was used. Just wondering if anyone knows. Thanks. I’m sorry, I don’t know the terminology and as anyone can see, I have difficulty with the methodology.
@russbear31Ай бұрын
It's simply the wind that is doing the damage. Even the smallest, weakest tornadoes can have winds of over 100 mph. I think this tornado in Nebraska was an EF 3, so the winds were around 150 mph. In an EF5, the worst tornado, the winds can be over 200 mph.

Some trees( like Willows) have a shallow roots and get storm with harsh wind and fall down- Maple have a deep root and rarely fall over
@russbear31Ай бұрын
In weather situations like this being "strong enough to bend" is an asset. Willow trees are flexible enough to bend and go with the flow. Hardwood trees usually get their limbs snapped off because they're too rigid and hard. Every tree is different, but a moderate tornado like this with winds of 150+ mph is going to wreck trees.
