It's Eddie Van Halen's Butterfly Picking technique. I learnt from watching videos of his playing and trying to re-create his positioning. I will probably do a video tutorial about how to do it soon.

Btw, if you figured this out by ear, how would you go about figuring it out without slowing it down? My guess is it has something to do with the chord progression and the scales behind it, but I'm honestly baffled how people do it without tabs.
