Joe I'm a very new sailor from China, i was born in a inland city with very limited access to water sports, but sailing have been my dream ever since I was a child. I recently got a second hand dart 18. I must say your video have been super helpful to me and I wanna say a big THANKS to you.

YES !! Excellent conditions for thew T and for training for the Worlds! And outstanding footage for training purposes Well done. Likewise I am very interested in your camera mounting, very intriguing...and mysterious...is off a kite flying from the mast...or a drone regulated to 3 meters aft? very interesting angle to "be on Board all the time. Love it! will be writing you soon after I study a few more times! Great sailing Joe, ...envious!

It's the amazing AI of the gopro max - it was on a pole from the boom which the software takes out of the picture

Great video angle. At the 12:20 mark it looks like the tiller hit the camera. On your return run back to the beach you can see the shadow of the pole/camera on the leeward side of the tramp, hull and rudder. How is that mounted and how does it know when to zoom in or out, etc.? It was very steady and auto level adjusted when you flew a hull.

It's really quite amazing. The camera shots 360 degrees, in the editing software I chose where to look at and how much to zoom in or out.

@@JoyriderTV It looks like the software still leaves the pole and camera's shadow (which is incredible that it can remove the mounting pole automatically).

@@JoyriderTV Got it, but where and how was the pole mounted? A nice still shot or 3 of the arrangement would dispel our collective curiosity. This may make a following drone somewhat obsolete.

Amazing perspective and really good ride. Today in norther Germany its rainy, so watching blue see with running T on top is an alternative ! One detailed question on genacker-ratchet and genacker-skot handling / cleanining up the lines on board: at 14:47 you were facing problems with the genacker ratched. Was it a mess up of jib-skot with the genacer ratched or genacker-skot? I am facing similar poblems on my T and would like to know if there is a possibility to prevent this messing up. At our T often either the end of the thick genacker-skot runs out of the firstratched so that only the thinner end of the skot is in the ratched (at the end the skot is thinned towards the sail) and if I try to loosen the skot it blocks at the ratched :-, or the jib-skot is pulled into the genacker ratched somehow during driving the genacker due to flying around jib-skot and blocks the ratchet too :-(. Any idea how to prevent?

I’d love to see Joe do a drag-race between a Tornado and a Hobie 16
@ronholm297
@ronholm297 3 жыл бұрын
I can tell you how it ends.. the Tornado runs away from H16... last year a good sailing friend of mine was solo on H16 and were were 2 up on the Tornado... even in conditions we couldn't trap and fly a hull on the T... we just walked him up and down wind.. reaching.. it doesn't matter.. last season was classic rigged Tornado.. this season it has the modern jib and spin.. but still classic main sail... it still runs off from not only h16 but also his Nacra 5.5. Only way the racing is close is in stupid light air... anything above that, the more wind thier is the bigger the difference.... I know right now a T might not be at top of Joe's speed stick... but I'll change that soon enough... in 10mph breeze with minor gusts the T touches 20mph easily..
@JoyriderTV
@JoyriderTV 3 жыл бұрын
I'd say that in over 25knots wind on a 2 sail reach the 16 will dominate. On all over points the T will kill it
@ronholm297
@ronholm297 3 жыл бұрын
@@JoyriderTV aawww. No way.. I might have to come out to the bay and drag race bad boy 94 against you on a H16... there is no way the H16 should be able to outrun the T on any point of sail in any breeze.. I love the H16 as much as the next guy' but the tornado is built for big air.. granted it is optimized for hieght and depth, but it does both of those by sailing lower and faster than most boats in close to the same ratings range. That hull lip and draggy hulls on the 16 just hits a wall in big air and rough water.... something the T has the hull shape and volume to just power through.. I have soloed my Tornado (a cedar cold moulded boat) enough in 15mph or a bit more breeze and it just flats hulls the mail.... with 2 up the only question I really have is if ultimate top speed is better achieved with 2 or 3 sails... I'll have to see if later this October when it's really blowing and I have the time I'll snatch that global speed stick...
@JoyriderTV
@JoyriderTV 3 жыл бұрын
@@ronholm297 I'm just saying that from my experience and extensive testing, the 16 goes faster for top speed. I've heard stories of Tornados going 26 knots+ (even one of Darren Bundock hitting 30 knots) but from my experience I can't get the T over 24 knots whereas on a H16 i'm hitting over 24 every time I go when it's windy.
@ronholm297
@ronholm297 3 жыл бұрын
@@JoyriderTV without crew and barely a white cap on the lake I can routinely catch a gust and hit 18knot or more solo on the T... those conditions the H16 isn't touching 16 knots. Now I'll admit I haven't yet had it flat out in the big air.. like the days and weeks of time I have on H16 in same conditions (picking up a Marstrom soon so I don't have to keep beating on the work of art) but there is just no way the T can't be much faster than the H16... I think it's just a matter of time on the water on each and what is done with that time. Rotate that mast back.. crank the down haul... and keep going faster as you go faster... solo I can feel overwhelmed or overpowered but as the T builds speed and apparent goes forward you can drive it so much hotter in gusts.. It's really bizarre..
