Toro LX 420 Deck Repair and Belt Replacement Part 1

This Toro LX 420 has been "fixed" by someone else. In this video I try to make it functional again. I get close, but it needs a few more parts and adjustments.
The belt for this mower is 1/2 inch by 109 inches, and the Toro Part number is 112-5800, but if you buy it from Toro, the belt will cost over $50. I bought this belt on Ebay and it cost $11.66 including tax and shipping.

Absolute biggest belt/performance issue with TORO mowers of this vintage is that it's extremely difficult to find the correct aftermarket spindles with the CORRECT 6.3" diameter pulleys (Toro OEM). Most of the aftermarket "OEM" products range from 5.5" to 6.1" diameter spindle pulleys. The cheapest and most often bought size is 5.5" which translates into just over 2" of belt slack...YIKES! Also, with an additional .4" of belt clearance under the spindle shroud belt keepers--you'll enjoy countless belt-drops, mangles, and useless cutting torque. Optionally, a 106" and up to 109" belt would do in a pinch but your messing with the engineered pivot forces and efficiency slopes with using smaller pulleys. Food for thought....Keep your pulleys from your old spindles to swap or buy the discontinued and now expensive TORO OEM part. You could likely get away with the 6.1" aftermarket variants but not likely to have much brush or lowered deck cutting power.

The belt keeper bracket on the front crank pulley has a tightened down bolt holding the bracket in place , yes you can pop the pin out of the frame and move it so you can install the belt ,, but ,, you need to tighten the bolt back up ,,, loosen first before popping that pin out ! The belt is 1/2 x 109 Kevlar material ! The pulley covers keep the belt from coming off when disengaged !

I have same mower and had same issue too since over two years. Spindles running slow at lower height. Problem solved on replacing PTO cable. Visually old PTO cable looked fine however still it was the root cause. Additionally I added greese too in the spindles. There is significant confusion as bearings are sealed and so many KZbinrs suggesting greese is not required but it made significant difference to speed of blades and how deck sounds while running.

I know I've commented on the loose belt, but can't find them to add this: I noticed a smell of the belt rubbing on something upon using a smaller belt (108x1/2 works perfectly), but found the brake that stops the blades is rubbing on the belt when I disengage the deck. Other than that the 108 works fine.

Blade engage spring might not be tight enough, I think “Taryl fixes all” has a video on how to shorten the spring

I have exactly same model mower, order 1/2 × 106" it will instantly solve your problem

My mower is doing the same exact thing after I replaced the belt. Have you figured it out yet? I have adjusted the hanger that holds the front of the deck up and it seems to change at what level the blades won’t spin.

And if you find the pulley guard please let me know where. Toro sold out to mtd and all the part numbers I have all say they can’t get them. I have a set I bought but turns out they got a bigger one and won’t fit

Adjust the deck so that the rod in front doesn’t hold the deck too far fwd and make sure the pto cable isn’t stretched too far

The spring in the tensoir cable if you heat it up an bend where you take up about quarter inch then put it back together will fix look tayl channel on you tube where I saw it works
