When I said that at meeting about 2-3 years ago it was one of more infamous smart ass comments people still remember me by that zinger because people and parents were spitting coffee all over each other laughing their asses off. People wanted me to run for an open position on their school board. I said within a week I would end up earning a lifes sentence at the state pen....

Also, to help prolong the life of your deck belts engage them at low speed before throttling up to mow. Every time you engage, you get slip. Every slip equals wear. The lower the RPM, the less slip ergo less wear and longer life.

Well, if you go real slow, and have the deck set high, they'll bush hog pretty well. Depends on the HP too. I end up bush hogging sometimes when my horse pasture gets out of hand, when I've been busy on other projects and neglected mowing. I've cut waist and even shoulder high weeds and grass with a LT1000 with a 17 hp Intec, and it never bogged down, I just had to go real slow. Main problem bush hogging with a grass mower is the deck. It's too enclosed. Bush hog and brush cutters have the front of the deck open, so the blades can hit the weeds without being bent over by the front edge of the deck. I recently purchased a junk LT1000 with a deck for $50, and am planning on cutting the front and sides of the deck away, and installing it on my good LT1000 and see how that works cutting weeds and brush. The worst problem really with all of these riding mowers is you can't raise the deck high enough for the best brush hogging. I'd really like to be able to have the deck at least 6 inches off the ground. But all these mowers are designed for mowing golf courses it seems.

@@hunter7476 I have one of those Garden Way sickle mowers. It's sitting in my barn unused for many years now. I got it used, in good working order, with two blade heads. The thing breaks teeth way too often, and they're a pain to replace. Plus, you can't use the cheap normal teeth for farm sickle bar mowers that you can get at TS. You have to use TB's special teeth that cost ten times as much. Eventually both cutter bars, the steel strip that the cutter teeth are riveted to, snapped in the middle. That little piece of steel costs $150 to replace. They get you coming and going. Someone needs to devise a way to make a better cutter bar for this little mower that can use regular farm teeth IMO. Till then, brush mowers that simply use a normal lawn mower blade are far superior because they are cheap, way more durable, and easy to sharpen or replace if needed.

(the highest deck setting is I think 6.5 inches off the ground if I'm not mistaken) full-on BEAST of a mower just a little tip for y'all: if you encounter tall grass while on just a basic riding lawnmower, mow it in first gear with the deck at max height *THERE'S YOUR DINNER!*

@@harryboeckler7198 Examine the deck pulleys. My nephew has a CC and it was throwing the deck belt constantly. He couldn't figure it out. I looked it over and on close inspection, you could see the tension pulleys mount, which should have been designed to have either a thicker threaded mount, or enough room for a nut under it IMO, had worn from the belt tension pulling on it. We had to replace the whole arm and that solved the problem. Part was a 'Idler Arm Bracket'. We also replaced the 'Idler pulley' because the bearing was shot, the Extension spring, belt and belt keeper rod. All those parts including shipping came to $173. It now works like new.

@KStewart-th4sk4 жыл бұрын
Don't think i would agree with that description. Worn pulleys would lead to the exact opposite of biting. Slippage, therefore heat, and glazing of the belt would be the result. Worn bad enough, the side of the belt isn't gripping the pulley at all, and could or more likely be riding on the inner circumference of the pulley.

I was cutting really thick grass which is now under the cut grass, and then driving into an area that the grass is already cut and cleared. The belt was snapping as Taryl said. I didn't hear it or feel it but it had to be happening if Taryl said so. Now I should be getting a long use from my belts if I cut the grass the right way. Don't cut grass on top of uncut grass. Cut grass onto already cut grass. Now off to the store to get a new belt. Thanks Taryl. We're never too old to learn.

Good and correct information. Some belts are over $100 and while they do last a long time they eventually wear out and when they do it is time to look at and replace the pulley and idlers. Everyone wants to replace just the belt and then complains that it didn't last as long as the original. Duh. OEM belts usually cost more but you are already at the dealer buying new pulleys and an idler or two Right?

Also, make sure the pulleys are free of surface rust where the belt rides. This rust forms when mower is in storage during winter season. Polish the inside of the pulley grooves with 220 grit sandpaper until they are nice and shiny or replace the pulleys if they are too rough. Your belts will last MUCH longer! And, use OEM belts, NOT "direct fit" or OEM "replacement". They WILL cost more, but will be worth it in the long run!

Charles; Have you considered trying to adjust the position of your mowing deck to be a little more to the rear of the tractor? In the manual for my mower (a 20+ year old Craftsman with the Briggs horizontally opposed 2 cylinder engine with manual deck engagement where the belt is also used as the clutch) there are good instructions for adjusting the deck to be "level" but they don't say a word about this affecting deck position fore and aft and it does. This is important because it directly influences how tight the belt is. It is a bit tricky because all of the adjustments interact but it may be possible to find an adjustment where the deck is still "level" but slightly to the rear of its current position. It should not take much change. Because the belt goes both to and from the deck moving the deck 1/4 inch to the rear would take a full 1/2 inch of slack out of the belt and that is quite a lot.

Good video. You say not to go too fast or mow too low because you're feeding too much grass and you point out to make sure you have the proper clearances. One thing I saw was a bunch of grass by the pulleys and you don't say to clean that grass out of there and another thing that goes along with abuse of the belt would be having a grass build up under the deck that prevents getting rid of the grass quickly and causing the slipping of the belt. Also found a portion of a tarp wrapped around one the the blades on a S160 John Deere. Good stuff. Thanks for the info.

Not so much John Deere or even some of the other brands but mainly Craftsman had ill installed belt guides from the factory especially these new machines I have people bringing me year old machines with the belts all mangled. What I am finding on the new Craftsman and TroyBilt machines is the belt guides are way outta whack... Way out and just recently a larger Craftsman came in and it only had 2 belt guides out of the five it should have had. I asked the customer who had it apart before he said nobody that was the way he got the machine. The only water I could throw on the flames after he got pissed off at me was suggesting perhaps someone at the big box store LOWES removed em for a repair on another machine.

Whenever I replace my belt with a new Toro belt (mower - Toro MX5050 74770), the belt seats even with the outer edge of the pulley. After 50 - 100 hours of use, the belt relocates to deep into the pulley. Also, could I run a 5/8" belt instead of the factory 1/2" wide belt? The ExtremeOPE PTO (X0718) currently installed says it is made for both 1/2" and 5/8" belts. Thanks a bunch!! William

another great video Taryl. i was given a Murray 38702x20c recently, and was told it just needed a bushing for a front wheel, i was later told it chewed up belts super fast. it's currently stripped down completely, there are four belt guides at the front, and three on the rear, 6 were bent and grooved from rubbing on the pulleys. the main frame assembly had patches welded on each side where the trans-axle bolted on, both patches were broken, so it was only held onto the mower with the brace near the brake disc, the reason for the strip down is a dozen cracks, someone way too heavy owned it in the past. the deck is pretty bad, but i might be able to repair it, at worst the mower can be a tow vehicle for the firewood cart or the lawn sweeper. regards from Australia.

Taryl, how about horizontal pulley, spindle and motor spindle (whatever its called) alignment? Do things over time slouch slop fall in small increments that you cant really see by eye? Perspective, lay down look at the deck belt. As you raise and lower the deck for cutting heights, would something like i describe be common enough so the belt no longer travels in a clean path across all wheels and then the belt comes off? Hard to explain... hope that kinda does it... My tractor ate 3 belts in a weekend. Ima gonna check the belt wheel surfaces today but it was fine for the first few cuts back in April. I've bought 7 belts this season, some oem, med quality and some cheapo. Is this a thing? or is it something else? Much obliged from Ontario Canada.

I hit a peace of steel yesterday. Brand new mower 😀. I could have craped a golf club. But what's done is done. Before I mow again I will look everything over. If I cracked a mandrel or bent a blade I will just have to replace or repair. I ran over a highway marker with a brand new cast iron mandel. It busted it into peaces. My old mower. But that peace of steel was my new Hustler Fas trak 54 inch deck mower.

Today's riding mowers even at the highest settings still cut the grass too short. Bad design... If you are on vacation for a week and then need to cut your grass, good luck...

I had a guy the other day go out using a flail mower on a really hot day and he was out for about four hours and came back with three belts ripped to shreds. He was trying to cut 5 foot tall grass at two fast of speed which caused the belts to overheat due to slippage. I’ve seen this type of thing way too many times even on Zero Turn lawnmowers especially when their blades are dull. When trying to cut too much material it puts way too much stress on the machine with doll blades.

Earlier the winter I purchased A belt for my lawn tractor snow blower attachment that cost about 170 from the dealer. I than ordered one from A small engine shop that sent me A B114 that was around $20. That cheaper belt which is much stiffer than the oem is A much stiffer belt that keeps coming off.

I had a Bunton mower years ago that wore those drive belts out like you mentioned. Wish I hadn't sold it. Got lucky and found a set of original equipment belts when I rebuilt my deck. Had been shredding belts. Now I know why. Cuts nice again for a 21 year old Craftsman. Thanks for another great video.

A had a Simple City 100 years ago.... the deck belt was great.... But the long belt, than ran the snowblower you mounted on the front... Holy crap. I put a peg in my shed, and hung the spare belts on there.... Could never figure it out....

It's not something we are doing Taryl. It is because of all the crappy Chinese bearings and spindles on these mowers. All mowers are 200 hours and get rid of them, or start replacing. That is just the world we live in.

why belts break: 1. pulling your blade engagement too fast all the time, 2. wrong size
