Toro replaced this model with a version that allows for the handle to be closed down similarly to the Hondas and added upright storage as a new feature. You also don't have to chase the Toro as you do with the Honda. The pressure sensitivity that adjusts to your pace is something anyone with a large yard would surely notice and appreciate, much more than that extra inch you get with the Toro. lol

I respect your review of both the Honda and the Toro. I have never had a Honda mower, but I do like Honda engines. I have purchased 3 Toro mowers, the 1st two were 22 inch cuts lasting me over 15 years. The Toro I now have is the 30 inch cut. I will not have another self propel mower that is not made like the Toro - I now use "Personal Pace TimeMaster". I never have problems with it starting and going into gear, due to not engaging the part of the mower that puts it in motion - which is one of the features I really like about the Toro. The mulching blade I put on the Toro mulches excellent - (very fine). Thanks for your video.

I have a Toro Personal Pace Recycling mower and it has never started moving unless the bar is activated. It continues to start easily and work well after many years of use. I work on both and can say that both have similar issues. As I test each one out after working on them, I can say I prefer the Toro for mowing as you have better control on the self propelled aspect. I have noticed both experience issues with axle shaft rusting problems. The older Hondas had bushing issues and received bulletins reguarding the issue. I get many in that will not pull backwards any more. Both have wheels that wear out way too quickly. Service on both is usually related to worn drive belt issues and extreme neglect both experience frozen cables. I think both mowers are decent and both are very popular.

@@megaversemusic7822 Ariens Commercial grade. Any model from a DEALER is better than the scrap the big box stores sell. Sadly, most mowers are now manufactured in another country. MTD pretty much owns the market on many brands. Honda has always been my personal favorite. The biggest issue I have with Honda is if you hit something hard, like a big rock or metal, it can bend the crank, the shear key doesn't save the crank shaft like other mowers. Always research whatever you purchase and have the sales person walk you through the mowers construction. Anything with a plastic transmission or plastic gears, pass on it.

I think a side discharge is a must, then a blade stop, then the single height adjustment. And unless you're going to mow your yard every 3.5 days, mulching isn't the way to get a good cut on thick grass. I love the Personal Pace feature. I have a Craftsman 28 inch self-propelled as my main ditch mower, but when I do grab the Toro, my first thought is how nice a light mower is to use.

I own both, one Toro Super recycler, and a Honda HRX. There both great mowers. The personal pace on the Toro is hands down the better drive, you never have to fight with the speed like you do on the Honda. The Honda HRX looks more modern, where the Toro looks a little old school. I have thick southern Saint Augustine grass, only mulch my grass, I can't tell when I'm done which mower I used. The duel blades on the Honda look flimsy compared to the Toro but time will tell if they last 5 years like my Toro. The Honda definitely feels a lot heavier when your mowing, where the Toro feels nimble. The Honda is better on gas but has a smaller tank but I do love the fuel shut off on the Honda. The Honda does call for a lot more maintenance than the Toro. The Honda has a bigger motor, but doesn't seem more powerful? When im mowing a small yard with lot of turns and having to pull it backward, and lots of landscaping, hands down I'm using the Toro. When I mow large stretches of straight lawn and not as many turns, I use the Honda. People ask me if I had to choose only one mower, The Toro hands down .

“A lot more maintenance “? Once a year oil and air filter. That’s it. My last Honda HRR lasted over a decade until “somebody” hit a stump that was hidden by a patch of heavy weed growth. Until then, all it ever needed was annual oil and air filter changes, new spark plug twice, and a new set of drive wheels once (the treads wore off). All were quick and easy to do. It would still be running like new were it not for that stump strike. Replaced it with another Honda.

@@dm285 Yeah I’ve had my Troy built with a Briggs & Stratton for 4 years and the owners manual said you didn’t need to change the oil until two years and I’ve seen some people go five years and never changing the oil on Briggs & Stratton engine. so I figured how much harm could two do. So that’s what I followed and then ever since then that I’ve seen what happens when you don’t regularly change the oil, So I did it last year and I will do it before next so that way it will basically be a year between oil changes, and I also now live by a very good saying that I heard a couple years ago that oil changes are the cheapest form of insurance.

Honda's are made for bagging, bag it beautifully but I don't bag. Honda's blades are great for mulching too but one can't mulch an untreated lawn very well. I really like the undercarriage of the HRR too, but the rear discharge things is terrible! And the main reason I have trouble with my HRR.

I've used both the top Honda (6 years) and the Toro Personal Pace mowers (8 years). Both cut my St. Augustine lawn well. However, the extra weight of the Honda made it more cumbersome and left deeper grooves in my lawn over time. The Toro was much more maneuverable, and I really liked the personal pace feature. I got tired of constantly adjusting the pace of the Honda. Considering the big difference in price and the maintenance cost of the Honda, I sold my Honda and fell in love with the ease of the Toro. I've mowed happily ever after.

And the only mower I've loved more than that one is my new HRX. You get so much with these Honda mowers. Give them good fuel (TruFuel, in my case) and they are pure, flawless joy.

Liked my Honda 170cc mower. Bought it from Lowes when we moved in New house in July. No problems until this spring when I seeded yard. Bogs down through thick grass and has ALWAYS missed (not cut) random blades of grass throughout yard. Ordered a Toro 190cc. My Dad always owned Toro and would be proud (R.I.P.) Waiting on delivery.

One of my reasons that I went with the Honda was the gas shut off valve. This way I can shut off the valve and run the mower until it dies-- thereby not leaving residue in the carburetor. Starts fast and fresh each start that way...

There will always be residual regardless including fuel bowl so its moot, It’s just not enough to run the mower engine. Most people are not going to drain the fuel bowl after each use, it’s not the carburetor it’s the fuel. Buy marine grade fuel (ethanol free) , most these issues go away, any youll get improved fuel economy.

@@2002SLPSS1991 Literally 2002SLP is right. There are tons of videos on running equipment dry. Best bet is ethanol free fuel with fuel stabilizer. Unfortunately any ethanol will corrode aluminum like the kind found in carburetors. ProjectFarm (youtube) did a test to prove it. I mix literally like 2oz or 2.5oz of fuel stabilizer per 5 gallons of gas. The 32oz bottle is like $8 at Walmart. and I just leave everything wet - chainsaw, weed eater, mower, etc. Works fine.

That Toro "self propel" design is HORRIBLE! You literally HAVE to push on it to make it go. That's not "walk behind" or "self propelled". It is "push assist" at best. I have an older Honda HRR model with the same transmission design as that Honda. It's hands down, THE BEST system I've EVER seen on a walk behind\push assist\self propelled mower. The Toro might be ok if you have a perfectly flat, level lawn. But on a "country's lawn that has hills, contours, ups & downs and off angle cutting, that would be a nightmare. The Honda? I can be in the ditch, cutting around a street sign pole, going uphill at a cattywhompus angle and with 3 or 4 fingers on the bar and the thumb on the throttle lever, that thing pulls itself up and out with zero effort from me. ANY speed you like, it's just like a motorcycle or ATV throttle lever. Want faster? Twist it further. Where most "self propelled" mowers will walk away from you on the down hill and then on the up hill you feel like you have to push or gear it up ....with the Honda it's just like a car\motorcycle\atv, you just give it more or less gas. Getting tired and don't feel like slugging up that hill again? Just give it a little more twist and it will not only pull itself up the hill, but if you hang on good it'll pull you up too. And the "quadra-cut" dual blade system! I've literally cut waist high grass and all I had to do was slow down more. And that was only because of the sheer volume of grass the mower has to discharge in that condition. (Yes, discharge. It literally was filling the bag about every 10-12ft.) But EVERYTHING it discharges is cut up so small ...it's more like a blender set on "puree" than a mower on "mulch".

You’re a real American hero for going out and buying both mowers to make this video. I was just bragging about how my old Troy bilt was bulletproof and it’s been through hell and back but I jinxed myself because somehow the motor filled up with gas and it hydro locked itself. I pulled the plug to try and blow the gas out of the cylinder but the engine is seized. I guess it ran for too long using gas as a lubricant 😂. Anyway I was looking at these exact mowers except ones with a few more options like the blade stop option you can get if you buy these at a local lawn equipment store and not Home Depot. The choice seems to be pretty clear. I noticed immediately that the toro was a lot bouncier when you were mowing and that the Honda just seemed like it was in another class. Almost* like a commercial mower. The only thing I liked about the toro is it’s ability to side discharge but I think you can get a chute that goes on the back of the Honda that’ll throw the grass out the side. *for all you mower snobs, yes I know that the HRN is not a commercial mower. I know the difference and I don’t need your spiel about how much heavier built a commercial mower is and that they’re built to mow a billion hours a week.

Good review. Had a similar Toro for 11 years and had the same issue that I was mowing the lawn twice because it was leaving a lot of grass behind. Just bought that Honda mower to replace it 3 weeks ago and it is a better machine, so I think you made the right choice. The Toro was very good, though, it just ended up having several maintenance issues over the years, so I actually put a few hundred dollars into it to keep it going, mostly a brake blade clutch system that failed early on. I also appreciate that the Honda doesn’t leave me smelling like burning oil. The engine on my Toro was an American made Briggs & Stratton from 2009 and started well, but I couldn't tell if the new Briggs engine was US made or Chinese. The Honda is made in North Carolina and that was enough to make the decision for me. The Honda seems to use less gas and uses less oil on my old mower- 12 vs 20 ounces. And it doesn’t leave me smelling smoky. The only issue I’ve had with the Honda is that I bag my grass and when you go to put the bag back on you have to make sure that there is not grass in the 2 catches that the bag sits in. If there is grass, the bag will bounce out as you are mowing because it is not able to fully seat low enough. As for the power drive on the Toro personal pace system, it actually does work quite well and you would get used to it. I was afraid I wasn’t going to get used to the Honda system, but that wasn’t a problem either. I really appreciate that the Japanese company makes these machines and engines in America. I also love that I can dump the grass much more easily out of the Honda because the opening is dramatically larger than the Toro, where I would have to stand there and shake the heavy bag up and down for a minute to get it all out.

I have the Toro AWD mower because my yard has a hill on the side and I used my neighbors new Honda mower and it beat me to death I had to push it more than the self propel did. But with the Toro I had no problem one reason is it is much lighter and 4 wheel drive. Now if my lawn was all flat the Honda probably would have worked for me. Cut wise the Toro had a better cut for me. My brother has a 30 year self propel Craftman and when it came to cut quality it was the best I can roll a golf ball across the lawn but it was a slow mover.

I thought I should add my experience. I bought the 2018 model of the Honda HRN216 and had it for one year before I sold it quick on Craigslist. I had a terrible time with the quality of the cut with it leaving a streak of grass uncut which drove me crazy. I tried sharpening the blades, buying a new blade set, raising the governor on the mower and nothing seemed to help. After reading on forums it seemed I was not the only one with the issue as others seemed to mention poor deck design not providing enough vacuum to lift the grass blades. I have since bought this exact Toro Super Recycler since I've had Toro's in the past and been happy with them. The Toro is providing me a much better cut on my grass than the Honda. I am not sure if I had a bad Honda deck design or something but these are my two cents. Thank you for the video! Few conveniences I miss from the Honda but much happier with the Toro so far.

More importantly though mine has issues with being pulled backwards. It binds up and is hard to pull back. There's known issues with the rear bushings and they have to he cleaned periodically but in my case it didn't help. I suspect there's an issue with the transmission. I've had Toro's personal pace for more than 10 years. What I do like about Toro's "PP" is that you do not consciously push the handle "in" in order to make it move. you just walk forward while holding the handle and it will move as fast as you can walk, If you stop walking it stops moving. Not intending to knock Honda's speed control but it does not appear to be as near as automatic as Toro's version. Don't get me wrong, I still want a Honda, just not at the cost of losing automatic personal pace. Thank you for taking the time to create and publish this video.

The blades were not sharp, so I touched those up with my hand-held disc grinder. After adding gas & oil, adjusting the cutting height, It started first pull & functioned perfectly. I was a little surprised by how fast the top speed is. A quick position change of the smart drive control paddle found a natural position for the speed I like.
