I'm on mow #5 with mine purchased about a month ago, I have 1/4 acre yard that is almost golf course quality grass. This new one runs smoother than an older honda 160 powered snapper 22" I just sold. Most places are pushing electric, not for me. And yes, honda sells for good prices used.

Just grabbed one of these today to go with my 2 year old HRX217HYA. I figure alternating between the two of them should easily last the rest of my useful mowing life. Ran the HRN once I got home and actually really impressed with it. Quite the upgrade from the old HRR216 I used to have and really not that big of a step down from the HRX with the hydro. Given that everything is going to throw away battery mowers, I figure might as well grab a spare while I still could, and I have slight concerns about support of the HRX composite deck 10 years down the line. Great video!

Have a Troy Built self propelled mower with a Honda engine. 16 years old now. Brought it out yesterday from winter storage, put in new gas, one pull and it starts. Note, have used synthetic oil since day one, change the spark plug every three years and clean and grease the axles and sharpen the blade 2x per season as I have a large yard.

I have also noticed that it’s difficult to bog down my Honda 216. Meanwhile I have a Toro TimeMaster that bogs down pretty easy unless I open up the side chute. It’s like Honda is the better mulching mower & Toro is best when when you let the clippings fly!

I appreciate your mention of non-ethanol fuel. I’ve been using it mixed with stabilizer for thirty years with no issues except for a recent purchase that wasn’t a Honda. I bought my HRN216 in 2020 and avoided the recall. In 2023 I bought a close out Toro Super Recycler model 21386 with the aluminum deck. From the start, I had to fix the valve cover which was leaking. The Toro can handle hills better laterally than the Honda which was the main reason for buying the Toro. However Honda build quality is light years ahead of the Toro. I just replaced the plastic carburetor on the Toro after 15 months. The main jet is super fine for meeting emissions but clogs easily. The main jet on the Honda is larger but still meets emissions while providing better fuel efficiency. The primary reason walk behind mowers, trimmers, blowers, and other small engine equipment including tillers are disappearing is due to USEPA Air Emissions Regulations that were implemented in the early 2000s. There’s a compliance schedule that manufacturers have to implement and most have already shutdown. With Home Depot having a limited supply post recall, I’m considering buying a second HRN216.

I bought mine from home depot 2 weeks ago. As far as I know all of the honda mowers home depot is currently selling have already had the recall done. Mine had the green dot, but I also checked the new serial number and it is not part of the recall as it was already fixed. Another tip, the box will look previously opened and retaped, also the flaps will not be glued together on top as it was opened for the recall.

Never had a push mower with overhead valves. Always just had the old-fashioned flat head-side valve engines. How often do you need to reset the valve lash on one of those things? I ask this because I thought my 14 year old rider bit the dust the other day. Went to start it and it wouldn't crank. Took out the spark plug and it spun freely enough. Had to get out my feeler gauges and re-set the valve lash, .004 on the intake valve and .006 on the exhaust. New valve cover gasket and she fired right back up like new! On a side note, I also added "poor man's power steering" by adding a set of needle bearings to the steering spindles. I tried replacing the front wheel bushings with bearings, but the bearings wouldn't fit, so have a slightly larger set ordered.

@@GarageGear Yeah, swapping something that affects the climate of the planet over something that could be more hazardous in the short term. Lithium based batteries contain a number of toxic substances and aren't really all that recyclable. At least at the end of life an internal combustion engine is actually recyclable. Some will claim that the batteries are recyclable but wish-cycling is a little different than reality. Most of the precious metals in these batteries come out as something called "black mass," something that's potentially more harmful in the short term than greenhouse gas emissions as well as being more potentially harmful overall than spent nuclear fuel bundles. I just don't think trying to separate the precious and heavy metals in black mass would be financially feasible.

The HRX217 is still better than that. You have adjustable speed control and an actual engine throttle so you can let the engine idle while you change the bag. Years ago, throttles were standard on mowers. Now you just pull and it revs up to high speed already and that just can't be good on the engine, especially each time you have to stop the engine to change the mower bag. Another reason I love the HRX217 because of that blade stop feature so you only have to start your mower once and get your whole lawn mowed without ever having to stop the engine to empty the bag or to stop mowing to move something out of the way without the engine stopping.

You’re preaching to a choir member😂. I’m the owner of five older Honda GX engine powered self-propelled walk behind Honda mowers, the oldest 3 being 35 years give or take. The most recent was the only one I purchased new back in the 90’s and uses a small hydrostatic transmission. I paid an insane amount for that mower 25 years ago, compared to what the average homeowner spends for a 20” mower. In spite of the age, all 5 operate exactly as they should, but also have been properly cared for and stored inside. All five still have original engines and original blade clutches. The Honda mowers all cut beautifully, mulch very well and have a good solid “feel”. I doubt I’d ever use another brand walk behind.

@@smitastic7030 That's interesting. Thanks for that feedback. There was only one serial number on mine (no "new" serial number) and it was definitely part of the recall. I did expect the box to have been opened and reused, but there was no sign of that. I tried to get some more information on Honda's website but finally gave up. Seems to me that considering Honda is no longer in this business that they are just dumping final stock.
